On Sunday, C. and I went for a walk around the neighborhood to enjoy the brief hours of sunshine before the Superbowl. I've come to really like watching sports, especially after playing intramural football in college, which was equally competitive and fun, but yesterday grad student voice* won out and I half-worked while we watched. This jacket has become my new exoskeleton--it's just the right weight for fake winter in DC--because I've barely taken it off in the past week. If wearing the same jacket fifteen days running is wrong, then I don't want to be right.
*You know Grad Student Voice, it's the one that says, "you could be working right now" or "I bet insert X colleague name is working right now." It takes no notice of professional sports schedules, your social life, or your mental health in the name of its mission. Most of the time, I can shut it up with a beer but I'm weakened by the length of my current to-do list.

I hear that voice, but I have a tendency to ignore it until it's absolutely impossible. But after a full day of work - school is not always my top priority. Kudos to you for getting some work done - wish I were able to say the same :)

All my grad student voice ever says is "You will never finish your dissertation" or "You will never get a job." Yours sounds more productive.
oh, anonymous, that is the chorus of my grad student voice! mine was "productive mean" this weekend, but last week grad student voice made me cry on the steps of the library of congress (embarrassing but true) and wail to a friend over the phone that i would never be smart enough to finish my diss and i'll probably be jobless forever! blech. i wish we could go easier on ourselves...

Ohh...that voice!! Just remember it could be worse...your senior grad policy paper could be due next week and you are still working on it. Gulp that would be me...speaking of which I better get back to work LOL. Thanks for the break. I definitely love the outfit...can't think about my own outfits till after finals LOL. I envy those of you whom have trimesters...not a big fan of quarters in grad school. Ughhhh

haha! It's okay...I crocheted for a fiber arts class I'm taking and hardly looked up to see the game. I'm not really much of a sports person, but we had friends over so I hung around.

@anonymous--tell me about it!! DC has had no weather to speak of, it's such a disappointment. i used to wish for inclement weather to get me out of things, but sometimes grad student voice is even more morbid. last year right before my comp exams, i remember thinking "if i broke my leg...or contracted avian flu, i wouldn't have to take this exam right away." so glad i didn't, but there are moments when you are just DESPERATE for more time. hope your paper goes well! i'll think good thoughts for you.

I'm the original anonymous poster reviving a dead thread to say "THANK YOU!" for the story about crying on the steps of the library of congress. I've spent the last 5 months (with 5 more to go) trying to finish my dissertation thousands of miles away from my friends, family and beloved boyfriend and have had so many embarrassing, dissertation related crying incidents! It provides a bit of relief (and maybe hope) to know that I'm not the only one. If you can keep up a killer blog, a dissertation, an online class and a social life in a new city I feel fairly certain that you'll find a way to make dissertation writing and the brutal job market work!
@anonymous (original)--actually thank you! one of the worst parts about feeling bereft and emotional about your dissertation is feeling like you're completely alone in it. when i was crying on the steps the other day, i felt like everyone else had it together and i was the one person who couldn't keep up/couldn't hold it together/wasn't good enough. it makes me feel so much better to hear that i'm not the only one who have those moments. while i know some of my colleagues do, sometimes i still feel like we are trying to impress each other and not share how pathetic we feel sometimes.
anyway, i know how rough it is to write while you're away from friends, family, and boyfriend! it's even more difficult than diss writing usually is. sending good thoughts (and lots of tissues).
