This week, I'm back to my beloved flyover zone for some meetings, research in the library, and catching up with friends at the university. This week will be low on posts for two reasons: I have a lot to get done; and I can't fit my camera (or really many clothes) in my bag because I have to save space for all the books I need check out! A girl's got to have her priorities straight, right?
One funny thing I've been thinking about: It's the first time I've been back to the midwest and my home university since I moved to DC and I am so excited for my trip. Four years ago (in my first year of grad school), I remember visiting my sister in California for spring break and when I landed back in Chicago to gray, drizzly, wintery-mix skies, I burst into tears on the runway. If you had told me that just a few years later, I'd be over the moon with excitement as I flew back over those cornfields, I never would've believed you. I'm amazed at how much has changed in the past five years, and I'm looking forward to DC eventually feeling as much like home as the midwest came to feel.
See you next week!

You look so chic and classy! Love this combo...I'm loving the belt on the textured skirt--gives it a totally different look...hmm...maybe I can copy this look tomorrow?
I went to college in Indiana having grown up on the east coast...I'm back on the east coast now, and I totally know that feeling of excitement when I travel back to the midwest to see friends or whatever. When I was in college I H.A.T.E.D. Indiana with a passion, but there's definitely something that gets into your blood and makes it "just feel right". I don't know that I could give up my mountains and my Philly-fast attitude forever, but the midwest will always have a special place in my heart. Have a great trip!

Have a wonderful trip!! I love that skirt, especially paired with that cute top and sweater. You look so lovely!
I love this outfit.
I'm a lifelong Pennsylvanian who, like you, found herself in the midwest for grad school, and I feel the exact same way. I remember coming home for Christmas my first year and crying to my best friend about how much I missed PA and how hard my first semester was. Now I'm in my 4th year and I'm starting to get a little wistful when I think about graduating in the next year or so. There are so many people I'll miss!
Anyway, enjoy your visit! (And I LOVE your boots!)
Welcome home! You're looking fantastic in Chicago!!

have a great trip :)
good luck with all of your work and enjoy your trip :)
I love your yellow blouse with the polka dot sweater. This would be such a cute work/class outfit (I'm always having to figure out what to wear when I balance both on certain days).
Have a fabulous time back at your old university! I never thought I would feel that sentimental about my alma mater until I decided to go back there for my master's. This college town is so much a part of me now, I think. :) Enjoy your time!
What a chilly week to be back! I have such a love-hate relationship with Chicago probably because of grad school, and have shed more plane tears than I should admit to in a public forum. But, more importantly, I need to find a grey flannel skirt!
You're so pretty, love the look!

I still haven't figured out which major univ you went to (really only 2 choices in Chicago...) but I'm dying to know whether we're alumni of the same schools!
love the sweater!
Cute outfit. Mustard is such a pretty color on you. And I love the cardi.

Very adorable outfit! You always manage the most simple and elegant looks - this one is no different. Love the pop of mustard. I think my obsession with that color started here at What Would a Nerd Wear. So thank you for that!

I've already had a freak-out about this cardigan, right? I mean, I love all kinds of polka dots but you don't always see the tiny little dots that this one provides! Anyway, I love the way you've styled it this time and can't wait to see the next way. :]]]

Oh I hope it all turns out that way for me too. I just moved to Chicago and when my mom left from visiting me right after Christmas I sobbed. It's been much better since then though! Enjoy the corn fields :)
I absolutely love your skirt!

Love that color combination! Enjoy your trip home!
So great to see you in this outfit! Also so glad to hear that you get excited about the Midwest - that's how it should be, for the right people! :)
The Midwest wins everybody over! We look so unassuming with our cornfields and cows, but deep down, there's magic.
I love this entire outfit. Before I left my day job, I'd look exactly like this a lot.
I adore your cardigan! have a great trip!

Nothing like polka dots to create a fun outfit. And I love the pop of color in that top. Happy I came across your blog. Thanks for sharing! xo
Great outfit... you are inspiring my work wardrobe. Thank you!
totally loving that little sweater!
I'm from the Midwest (Indiana) and after college I worked for the government and lived in DC for almost 3 years. Then I decided I needed to go back to school so I'm in my last year of grad school now....back in Indiana. I know the feeling you're talking about as I've had it many many times. I had to stifle back tears every time I left my parents at the airport even though I'd be ecstatic upon landing at DCA. I never knew whether or not I should feel guilty about feeling so at home in a place that wasn't like home at all. But it's funny what can become your new normal. I miss DC a lot now that I'm back in Indiana and every time I go and visit friends I can feel it pulling me back in. It'll be interesting to see where I end up after I graduate!
I just came across your blog through the Ruche giveaway you're hosting. I love this outfit, it looks darling on you! I hope you have a grand trip!
