I'd Like to Thank the Academy

i'd like to thank

i'd like to thank
works cited: h&m skirt; secondhand j. crew jacket; american apparel sweatshirt; hue tights; thrifted bag; steve madden boots; hanes tee shirt; necklace from the summercamp lost and found

I threw this on yesterday to run a few errands and ended up wearing it straight through the day and into the evening, where I watched the Academy Awards with a few friends late into the night (and lost in our betting pool, as usual). Last year, I was obsessed with True Grit and was crushed when it didn't win Best Picture. This year, I really liked The Artist and Midnight in Paris (a great literary nerd movie if you haven't seen it) and was cheered to see them both do well. Did you watch? Any favorites win or get snubbed?
P.S. An interesting article about the make up of the Academy.

I loved Midnight in Paris too! Great J. Crew jacket!!

I Think Girl with the Dragon Tattoo should have been nominated for best original score. Otherwise I was pleased with the Oscars last night!

@agapelife--yes, the music was incredible in it!

Love that jacket!

I watched the Oscars--I thought it was a bit boring and predictable. I was disappointed that Hugo didn't win any major awards. It was a fabulous film based on an absolutely amazing book

lovvvvvvvvvvvvvve that skirt. need that skirt.

What Would a Nerd Wear said...

@carrie--it's less than $5 at h&m! i wasn't sure i liked it but christopher insisted i get it and try it out, and indeed it's awesome. and if it falls apart after ten wears, then it was a very cheap dishrag.

I too stayed up {way too} late last night watching the Oscars. In general I didn't love as many of the movies this year, but was happy to see Midnight in Paris and the Help get some love.

i have to admit i'm not really a movie person (and therefore i'm really not much of an awards show person either). i see maybe one new film a year, at best. BUT i've been dying to see midnight in paris, so i'm glad to know you enjoyed it! i'll be sure to netflix it soon. :)

also, LOVE the skirt. i have a similar skirt in just plain black, and those stripes give it such a wonderful punch!

I really love how casual, but incredibly put-together, this outfit is. Especially for something you "just threw on." The skirt is absolutely adorable!

Just clicked on your post from last year's Oscars. Mostly I love that you talked about going to Madison for the protests. Good for you! I've been reading for a while now, but knowing that you were supporting the cause of teachers and public workers makes me like you (and the blog) even more!

i was happy meryl streep won b/c i felt it was payback for not winning with either julie/julia (she lost to sandra bullock, wtf?) or doubt, but i did feel bad for glenn close as it probably should have been "her year."

i also hoped tinker, tailor... would win either adapted screenplay or best actor, but i am glad the artist did so well!

What Would a Nerd Wear said...

@tasty moog---yeah, i know! last year i was so incensed, i really don't like sandra bullock and it was criminal to see her beat meryl. to be honest, i think meryl should win EVERY time she's nominated, not just this time, but i hear you on glenn close--she was amazing this year.

@mollie--thank you!! for the most part i try to stay neutral on the internet (though not in real life!) but it was such a big part of my life last winter it felt bizarre to exclude it entirely.

Love this jacket! Great construction.
I didn't have time to watch the awards yesterday. I was immersed in branding and homework!

Everything about this outfit works, even though it's so basic.

I was so disappointed in the Oscars this year. The telecast was so boring, and Billy Crystal's jokes were decidedly not funny and so so predictable. I enjoyed The Artist, so I'm glad it won, but I felt that The Descendants was a far better film. Personal opinion though!

Once again, Terrence Malick got snubbed, but that's not anything new.
I haven't seen Midnight In Paris yet, but it's in my queue...I'm looking forward to it!
aaand Jean Dujardin is wonderful.

That skirt is to die for!

I, too, loved Midnight in Paris and The Artist, so I was thrilled to see them do well. Midnight in Paris was a reader's dream, and it's not even my preferred era!

Every time I see this jacket, I want it more! It's so great. Really cute outfit. I did watch the Oscars for the first time in years. Is it just me or does anyone else get teary-eyed and revert back to dreams of being an actress/director/producer? And how awesome is Meryl?

BiblioMOMia said...

One of my favs on you in a while--this skirt is both totally unlike other things you have, and yet totally "you." Maybe because it's stripes, but more body-con than other items in your wardrobe? Whatever it is, it's gorgeous on you, and styled perfectly with the jacket and boots. Yup. Love.

2ndhandknowledge said...

I love this outfit! I especially like the way the bold stripes make the neutral color outfit a bit more exciting. And the purse is adorable.

I'm a long time stalker of your blog, but I had to actually comment--I love that jacket! It's somehow confederate army uniform meets urban chic and its awesome : )

I love, love, love this outfit! Impeccably smart, with a touch of sophisticated whimsy.

...God, that sounds pretentious. And an aftertaste of oak with subtle undertones of peaches and rosebuds.

Add me to the long list of admirers of that jacket!
