I've missed bicycling in the winter, so this morning I hauled out my mittens and an extra fleece and decided to go the five miles to the Library of Congress on my two wheels. It doesn't take any longer than the metro but it feels about five times as nice--time in the sunshine; beautiful views of the capitol; an invigorating climb up the hill made challenging by the Triumph's weight, a bag filled with books, and minimal gearing. It was so galvanizing, I don't know why I haven't done it sooner. This outfit was 100% functional--bright pants for visibility, turtleneck sweater for warmth in the frigid library, flat shoes for just-in-case-of-emergency on a new bike route, and a braid to fit snugly under my helmet (safety first, right?).

Thank you so much for the comment about wearing a helmet - it disturbs me so much that so many people ride bikes without them!!
PS: I love this outfit! It is exactly what I wear almost all the time when I'm not at work.
Love the classy turtleneck... And I'm such a fan of red pants!

love this look, tanya! it makes me want to break out my ancient black thrifted turtleneck. i feel so audrey hepburn in it, but also kinda claustrophobic...
oops! tania.
I love my gold Breda watch. It gets lots of compliments! -Lauren
Too bad you rode yesterday instead of today. Yesterday was perfect bike weather. Apparently it's going to be in the 50s next week. Dust off those tires!

Terri--I did ride today and it was gorgeous! I am used to frigid Midwest winter riding so even a sunny day in the thirties feels plenty warm. It has been gorgeous hasn't it?
I think this is my favorite appearance of the red jeans so far. :-)
so stylish riding your bike :) there's just something about bright winter days that's perfect for riding weather. and i'm glad you stay safe with the helmet :)
Awww So cute!
i love how turtlenecks look on everybody but i just can't stand wearing them. I feel like im being choked :(
Yay for helmets! I'm a bit of a helmet nazi (I lost a friend who wasn't wearing one)....
You make me want to ride my bike someplace but I'm always afraid of the traffic. I live in the South so people aren't really used to sharing the road with bikes.
@ashley--i'm so sorry about your friend, and i think it's so important to encourage people to wear helmets, you never know who you'll run into on the road! i hear you on the south--it is way scarier to ride your bike in a place where people aren't used to bikes than it is to ride in a city where it's crowded but at least a lot of people bike.
@anon--yes, i feel you!! i was tugging mine away from my throat all day. some turtlenecks are more comfortable than others (thin jersey ones choke me less). this one is kind of killer unless i'm freezing.
Aren't colorful pants just the bomb?? I am obsessed with mine :) Love the bike, btw. I've been hunting for spare cash to invest in a sweet bike of my own.
PIECE OF CAKE. PEACE OF MIND.
You make safety so fashionable! I love the boots, which stand out against your vibrant pants.

I love that you can look stylish while biking!
Love your boots!
Great minds think alike!... https://2ndhandknowledge.wordpress.com/2011/12/19/im-back-for-real-this-time/ :)
Winter biking is totally the best. Fist bump to you for having the courage to get out there!
I'd go with a brighter top while cycling, but I guess it'd be pretty hard to miss seeing you in those jeans :)
I've had a love/hate relationship with turtlenecks since I was a kid and absolutely despise the type that feel like you're choking or itch like crazy.
That's why I prefer lightweight ones made of either cotton/lycra or soft quality wool.
A collar about 7 inches unfolded with just enough give so I'm not uncomfortable after a few minutes gets me through the cold months gladly :)

You are an inspiration. Your quiet strength, beauty, and sweetness shine through your serene demeanor in your pictures. My fight with cancer affords me ever so much respect and appreciation for who you are today and where you've come from. God's blessings on you and yours for being so generous and setting such an example.
