Lots of bright, cheerful color for a busy day prepping, grading, reading, writing, and spending some time in the National Portrait Gallery. I have to puff up my chest a bit at how many colors I worked in here without feeling like the look is completely overboard (or who knows, maybe it is). Either way, it's galvanizing to change up my uniforms of grays and brown once in a while.

I'm a bike-riding bookworm in DC trying to make better use of a sometimes-vanilla closet. You can read a little more about this blog

I don't think it looks overboard at all. Those colors look extremely good together.
You know, the mittens bring this whole outfit together :)

You look adorable!
Ooh, I love the different shades of red & pink together!

Love all your colors! I don't think it's overboard at all.
ohh such a lovely look! even with so many colors you don't look even a tad bit overboard! <3

What a great dress, you wear it well now but it will be great in warmer months too!
You look fantastic in that dress! I'm so happy it worked out for one of us. ;)
I love that purse!
I'm a big fan of being able to wear a summer dress year round. This is an excellent example of how to make a summer dress work in January. I also like how you've accessorized it with the winter colors and textures. Having spent the weekend in DC at all of the museums and witnessed what most people wore to spend their afternoons walking around such beautiful institutions, (mom jeans and white tennis shoes circa 1985), I think this is a great outfit to stand out from the crowd in.
You're a brave woman, I don't think I could pull off so many colors all at once!

Not overboard at all. I love all the colors, and I love the National Portrait Gallery. I used to live near DC and one of the things I miss most are the free museums!

That dress is fantastic! I love seeing how you are able to make a warm-weather dress work for those chilly (well, maybe not THIS winter in DC) days when you need the extra layers.
I LOVE the color combo! It's totally just a happy sort of outfit!
this looks FANSTASTIC! you will brighten anywhere you go today :)
i meant FANTASTIC, haha
I love this! The colors pair beautifully together!
I love this outfit! The color palette works really well and isn't overwhelming at all. I think it probably helps that you still mostly stuck with one color (red), and then did variations of it. Plus, the yellow cowl is adorable!

I also kinda want to steal that amazing cowl scarf! The color is perfection :)
I'm loving all these colors you put together, they all mix well. It looks like you are preparing yourself for spring.I still have to get some spring colors myself, I would like to find either mint-colored skinny jeans or a mint colored skirt.
That dress!!<3

Love the colors in this outfit! You look very cheerful :-)
I think I need that scarf.
I love all your colors. Looks great! Perfect for the fancy artsy types at the gallery.

I love this dress! Is it currently available at Ruche? For the life of me, I can't find it on the website - well, anywhere besides the featured image, that is.
Love this outfit and all the colors! That dress is so lovely!
You look BEAUTIFUL in color!! You should wear it more often :)
ooohh I like!! I think wearing different shades of a similar color (aka pink and cranberry) is one of my favorite trends right now---you look great!!
Love this aubergine snood, and the combination of aubergine and maroon! Fabulous.
I absolutely love this outfit! I would never have thought to pair those pieces together myself, but it looks great.
Jessica--I think it sold out, sadly :( it may be restocked because they often do that with popular items. I'll see if I can find a link to send to you.
Jackie--yay I agree! I hadn't even realized that it's the multiple shades of pink. Now I will know how to try it again :)
This outfit is so pretty!! I love the different colors all combined! xoxo
I'm assuming this is the Ruche dress you spoke about via twitter a couple days ago. I'm lovin' it! Great color and dots? Perfect!

Polka dots are great1

Girl, I think the colors blend so harmoniously! Well done. :)
From a fellow grad student whose style has evolved considerably from following your blog and the late academichic (RIP), thanks for continually showing that it is possible to be smart AND chic!
I think the only thing this outfit would need is a piece to integrate all the colours. You have some awesome colours going on, but none of your items share the colours. But I'm matchy-matchy and that's how I roll. You still look fantastic :D Colours suit you wonderfully and it's great to see you exploring with them.

Found another way to curl your hair overnight and had to share!
That dress is fantastic!
Each of these pieces are super cute separately, but I have to be the lone dissenter here and say that none of them really go together well. (You're adorable, though!)
Love your outfit- such a cute dress and lovely colourful gloves!

I absolutely adore this outfit! I can be a bit of a scaredy cat when it comes to mixing hues, but this has inspired me to try harder :)
