I've got to make this speedy, because my class starts in about 9 seconds. This outfit is one of the ones Lauren helped me put together when I traded her lunch for some new closet ideas. I asked her for help with this blazer, which hypothetically should be easy to style, but for some reason its length kind of baffles me and I always feel long in the torso when I wear it, no matter how many belts or waist-highlighting tricks I apply (not that I ever overdo it on the belt front...). Any tricks or tips up your sleeve? I'd love to hear them.

yes, aren't they? they were kind of a bear to break in but they are perfect with skinnies now. and that's high praise from you, bridget--always such a stylish mama!
I love this styling of it. Nice work. I also like the idea of really structured pieces with really girly/frilly pieces. So a long blazer like this with a more aline dress/skirt and belt is a good combo...
Maybe try pairing it with a skirt?
I think how you styled it today looks great, well proportioned and very cute. I've been reluctant to try colored jeans and you've convinced me that they can look great.
Maybe try a skirt that hits your waist at the same level as the jeans. I can also see the jacket looking cute on you over a dress.

@maryeb--yes, i've definitely thought that, too! i think i'm going to try it with a minidress and tights sometime, maybe when it gets a little warmer (then again, it's 50 degrees today!).
It's funny - I have a nearly-indentical blazer, and my biggest complaint with it is I wish it were longer. It makes my torso feel squished and my legs two long. If you mixed our blazers together, we'd have the perfect specimen :)

I'd pair it with a girlie dress, to balance out the structured aspects of the jacket. I have a similar jacket in my closet that I'm scared of pairing, but you have inspired me to try!

I know what you mean! I normally wear mine with low cut flares and a tank but recently I wore it with mid rise slacks and a button up and I felt so disproportionate. Rolling the sleeves up to your elbows helps too (although it looks like you're freezing!)
@kiley--yes, i think the sleeves could use another roll. do i look freezing? it's actually really balmy today--going to be 55, ahhhh!
i have an amazing vintage wool blazer that i thrifted for a whole $3 that i love, but because of the length (it's the same length as the on you're wearing) i still haven't worn it after all these months.
also, i love your pants!
@danielle--i had a wool one, too, that was great but i never wore it as often as i thought so i purged it when i moved to DC in august. i love jackets but for some reason i feel like they look better on other people and i don't always like the way they look on me. glad to hear other people love but don't wear their jackets!

i think the proportions of this outfit LOOK just right, although if it doesn't FEEL right, it doesn't matter. i second the idea of wearing it with a high-waisted skirt or dress, especially one that's above the knee. with pants, perhaps heels or wedges would make you feel more proportionate - though i know that makes it harder to bike.

@michelle--thank you!! i totally agree and know just what you mean. and yes, i did! yesterday i took it out of its bun and it was so perfectly curly! so i threw it back in a bun overnight and it came out like this. it still probably won't stick through most of the day but it looks great this morning and was easy as pie.
Blazers are such a versatile peice that you can do soo much with. They look so edgy worn with dresses, and they add some flair to any printed skirt. You should wear blazers more often, they look good on you!

I have this same blazer and wore mine with a cowl neck shirt (to soften it up), tweed shorts, black tights and black boots. Maybe try a pair of jean shorts with tights?

I think horizontal lines help to throw off the length..as well as drawing attention up- so some "heidi" braids, fishtail or some amazing pull back with some cute earrings! You look awesome anyhow :)

I really like the contrast of colors in your outfit. Whenever I wear my longer blazers I make sure to wear a blouse that is fitted perfectly; if it's too loose I'll look sloppy, too tight; and I won't be able to breath for the rest of the day. I think that you paired yours in a cute and casual way.

I just wanted to say that because of posts you had done in the past with your red pants, I finally had the courage to wear some today, and got positive feedback on them! Thank you for focusing on such accessible, everyday looks that others can emulate! Always a fan :]
A dress above your knees would let your long legs been seen (all the lines are above the knee, so the calf is nice and free); or a pair of pants that go past the ankle. The red skinnies are great, but they hit at the ankle, which can also shorten the leg a bit.
that is such a great blazer! I recently got one just like it from Gap and I feel similar to you when I try to style it--but your look here gives me hope!
@anie--yes you are so right!! i didn't even think of that before...
I'd recommend a couple of things when styling this blazer (and I am probably going to repeat people who commented above me, but I can't read theirs too since this is my "working on my article review assignment" time):
1. Tighter-fitting bottoms are required because if it flares at the hip it'll look odd under the blazer.
2. Something shorter (above the knee at least) would call attention to legs and height.
3. At the moment I'm obsessed with wearing turtle necks under less-than-full-length sleeves such as those that the blazer has.
4. Shorts would make it look edgy (with tights, don't be a martyr). I'd probably wear a shirt (duh) some shorts, textured tights and my wannabe combat boots, but that's not totally you, haha.
i like this outfit! i'd go with a short skirt or dress under this blazer. and if a dress, i'd toss a wide belt in there!

I have a long, boyfriend-style blazer and I like to pair it with a mini dress (kind of a stretchy sweater-style plain black one, but for your black blazer maybe you could bring in a pop of colour) and some ballerinas... and you can never over-do belts :-)Mango do great affordable stretchy sweater dresses (seriously, I bought like five and I wear them waaay too much)

I've got a blazer that length, and i'm super short! I usually pair it with a short short skirt or dress, so it comes out only a few inches longer than the dress - with some thick tights to make it appropriate to sit down, I feel so much taller than i actually am!!
