Vanity/Insanity

cold as shit

cold as shit
works cited: dress c/o spotted moth; madewell sweater; hue tights; j. crew boots (and puffer coat)

Just as I was beginning to believe that D.C. doesn't have winter, a 30-degree day with whipping winds arrived to tell me otherwise. The bizarre-ness of taking photos of oneself every day is especially striking in the cold weather, when it seems not merely vain but downright masochistic to head outside into the chill and take off one's coat just to get a picture with great natural light. So to answer my mother's inevitable question: yes, I'm wearing a coat when I go outside; yes, Christopher has to cajole me to take it off; yes, I'm freezing when we take these pictures no matter how cozy my wool sweater keeps me indoors; indeed, the relaxed face you see above is a mirage (evidence below for something that better captures how I feel right before Christopher takes my picture in December weather). Now if only I were a bit more like Wim Hof...

cold as shit

P.S. Kayley's post yesterday on winter photos cracked me up.

This made me laugh, I felt the same way heading out to take pictures this morning.

I LOVE that dress - it's adorable!

And I feel the same way about the cold - we've been spoiled this year in DC, but looks like it's finally onto the chill...

I've already abandoned taking photos outside. It's indoors with a flash for me! But considering I usually take photos on my terrace, and it's extra-windy up there, and there's also snow and a sheet of ice out there too... nah, I'll take crappy-quality and warmness. But you are awesome for sticking it out outside!

Such a fabulous dress!

I've had these same sentiments, especially since this is my first winter blogging. I have found myself with frozen fingers and noses and asking myself why the hell I was putting myself through this torture. At any rate, I love your polka dot dress, it is fun. Now go inside with a cup of hot chai! (Spoken like a true mother)

oh the puffy coat! My hubby really hated mine when we lived in the Midwest, but I truly believe it to be a necessity of winter. If you've got a puffy coat and good boots you can tolerate most anything. There were even times when I'd gloat about how toasty it actually got inside one of those things! ha ha!

You look lovely despite trying to also be practical :) Oh, and yes don't let the east coast fool you, I found it to be much windier than the midwest which is a ol' nother type of cold.

LOL I love that last photo. Taking pics in the winter is hard cause it's cold and gets dark so early! I can never get up in time to take photos before work.

Taking cold weather photos is awkward. I have mine down to a science, so I can take them really quickly, but I still get cold.

ugh, seriously. in the summer, no problem, take 50 pictures! in the winter, it's a lucky day when one of the 5 i can manage before frostbite kicks in looks good enough to post.

This morning was ridiculous! It's warmed up here in northern VA. Hopefully you're not freezing anymore.

just great ;-) but at least you have time to take the photos! When I come back home from work - dark... when i leave for work in the morning - no time ;-)

P.S. I'm impressed by this relaxed face despite the cold!

Love this dress, and you've managed to keep a very calm face. It's been bitterly cold when I went out for photos a couple times and I do not think my face has turned out this pretty yet.

Great dress! I haven't yet suffered through a winter of taking outfit photos yet, but I suppose I'll soon know what it's like!

so funny. we took our Christmas pictures today and the weather was starting to get COLD! I convinced myself a sleeveless dress was appropriate but it did not suffice. yikes.

Thanks for putting up with the cold weather to show your sweet style. I'm from Texas where winter lasts for like a blink of an eye, but I had the same problem the other day when the high was 32 degrees and my husband got a picture of me whining about having to take my coat off too. Too funny.

I just started my blog and was wondering how people take pictures in the winter, as i look outside and there is snow on the ground and it's freezing! Thanks for including the other picture! :)

HAHAHA! We might not get lots of snow, but we certainly get some nasty wind. I'm glad to know that even you had out your puffer yesterday!

The dots are absolutely divine, m'dear.

LOL, Tania - yesterday's weather was CRAZY (I work in DC in the West End). When I started walking from the metro to my office I thought - "Wow, I guess winter is really here!" Of course I accidentally wore my spring coat, and I was FREEZING!!! Today I came prepared!

Love that final picture! I got a lot of weird looks taking outfit photos in the Canadian winter last year, so I ended up giving up after a few tries and moving inside.

Ha! Thanks for sharing "the hidden truths" about shooting outdoor outfit photos:)

Love how relaxed you look despite being freezing. Indoor photos: I'm willing to bet I see a lot of them this winter. ;) Go you for being able to get out and snap photos in such a cute dress. :)

The weather around here HAS been especially crazy lately. I have to force myself to get into the habit of checking the weather online before I get dressed. It's especially crazy in the valley, where I am.

wildchild said...

ha i bet that's awful. but you must be at master at taking quick pictures by now- that's a bonus.

does Mr. Hof ingest copious amounts of vegetable oil and lard like that guy who trekked around the South Pole on xc skis? Personally, I would stick with the down coat...
