The pattern suggests that long sweaters work best over skinny jeans or short dresses and skirts. Once I wore a long sweater over a long skirt, but it turned out to look pretty dumpy (evidence). I'd love to hear your ideas/see your links about long sweaters, if you'd like to share in the comments!

I'm not sure what it is or why, but I love myself a long sweater! I'm short and small so I have to be careful not to get swallowed up when I put one one. You seem to have nailed the look pretty well!

I think you have the formula down to a tee!

Long sweaters are the best. I can't live without them. Really liking your look with the rust colored tights (Second pic, second row)!
the sweaters pull every outfit together perfectly. keep rocking them- you do them well.
I'm wearing a long sweater right now, over a long-ish t-shirt and skinny jeans tucked into riding boots. I almost bought another one yesterday, and since I keep thinking about it, I might have to go back and get it. My Target has them on the 30% off sale rack this week, just an FYI.
I really like how you put it together. I would never stop loving long sweaters :)

You rock it every time.
These are all great outfits. I think they work best over a short skirt or belted.
I just found your blog and look forward to seeing your outfits. I'm curious (as I own two) how do you handle sweater dresses? I have two really log sweaters I wear at home because they're comfortable, but wearing out hasn't happened yet...
As someone who doesn't wear short skirt or dresses, getting proportions to work correctly can be tricky. Though I did were a long grey cardigan with a knee length dress here: http://rebeccawithanr.tumblr.com/post/11610965473/blush-cream-and-grey and I thought it looked ok. I think cinching at the waist helped but it probably wouldn't look good if it was just hanging there.
I have a long grey sweater too. I love seeing all the combinations that you have with yours for inspiration of my own. However, I don't have the skinniest of kneees/inner thigh area so I shy away from short dresses/skirts. So, my normal length is what you show in your "dumpy" look. Oh well, I guess I just have to keep working out my legs so my skirts can get shorter. haha
I definitely bought into the long cardigan trend. I have three of them! One in black, one in light brown, and one in pink.

Love long sweaters, my grey one is my favoriite too.
natalie--there's nothing dumpy at all about long skirts! in fact, i generally love them and have been wearing them lots. i just find that i don't like the silhouette of a longer skirt PLUS a longer sweater on me--it ends up feeling like it swallows my figure. i bet long skirts look lovely on you and maybe there is even a way to do long sweaters over long skirts that i haven't figured out yet (extra long sweaters? fitted long skirts?).
i love long sweaters as well, i have a gray one that i am obsessed with and wear it with everything!

They also look frumpy with flared pants or wideleg pants. I've tried & the results were terrible. I think you've got the good combos down pat.
I like long sweaters over skinnies. They look fabulous together. Oh yes, definitely trying to avoid the frumpy look.

I have a long sweater and a maxi skirt on today--and didn't take a picture! With a belt and boots, it's definitely one of my favorite fall combos. However, I agree that proportions can be tricky.
However, your pics make me realize I definitely don't wear longer sweaters with skirts/dresses nearly enough. Such a lovely silhouette!
In addition to the skinny pant/jeans, short skirt/dress formula,I have found that if the skirt is more form-fitting, i.e. a midi-length pencil skirt and the long sweater is belted the look can look great and really play up an hour-glassy silhouette. I think it depends on the cut of the sweater whether it has a v-or crew-neck and whether it is more boy-friend slouchy or tailored.
I just posted an outfit including my newest long sweater!

I LOVE it when you do these 'How Do I Wear Thee' posts!!
I love long sweaters! There is just something so cozy about them on cold days. Your sweater is awesome- love how versatile it is!
haha! I never realized how much you wear long sweaters until now. But you still keep it so fresh with different styles.
I love wearing mine with shorter lengths, just to keep the balance right.

I love long sweaters! But I only own one and it's fuzzy and picks up stuff like crazy, so I only wear it at home. :( I've been trying to find ones I like for a year now but I'm apparently terrible at shopping + too picky. Any recommendations?
