Sleepless but sadly not in Seattle

works cited: dress c/o spotted moth; j. crew sweater; steve madden boots; socks and belt from target

I arrived back in DC last night after an exhilarating and simultaneously exhausting week away, during which I saw many old friends, got up early to watch the sunrise, wore my red jeans nearly every day, and succumbed to the convenience of traveling with a kindle instead of a pile of books. I also got to attend my five-year college reunion, where I stayed up till 4 a.m. two nights running just to have the extra hours with my friends. Laughing with old friends all night was just what I needed and I'm paying for it by feeling bleary-eyed this morning as I face a week of editing, conference-paper writing, and teaching that (weirdly) didn't go on vacation while I did. Happily, fall seemed to come to DC while I was away, and I could put into action my plans for this dress when I got up this morning.
Now I have a big mug of coffee and I'm off to catch up on everything. Did anything exciting happen on the internet last week?
P.S. Forgot to add: you can get a 10% discount at spotted moth by entering "nerd"at checkout :)

I love the cut of that dress on you cinched in with your thick belt! I can't wait for it to cool down just a bit more here so I can bust out some socks and boots! Welcome back. You were missed!

Hi! Found you from Daybook ... I just think all of your ensembles are totally cute! Things I think I could actually pull off! I have these exact boots, and am dying to get up the nerve to do the high socks thing with them. I actually included the first picture and a link to your blog in my own post ... probably post tomorrow ... I'm sure I could figure it out, but what are the specifics of the socks at target? I can see me now, getting home to discover that they are like 2 inches SHORTER than the boot. Love the blog! :)

I love this dress. I have a grey sweater that looks almost like yours but I got it at Gap. I think I may have to find a dress like this now :)

Love love love your outfit. I really need to find boots in that color - awesome for fall!

Unrelated to fashion - are you using your kindle for reading papers/books for your dissertation? Just curious how that's working out for you, if so -- like do you highlight, and make notes, etc? Seriously considering some type of e-reader/tablet for my dissertation reading but scared to fork over $500 for iPad, wishing I could find something more affordable that would achieve the same function. It might be the new Kindle fire, we'll see :) just curious on your experiences w/it...

I love this outfit on you! You always seem to belt your outfit just right, mines always slide up and and and the loop always unravels itself. Some people just have all the skills ;) I think I will attempt to put something similiar together - thanks for the outfit inspiration!

It's always great to stop and catch up with old friends when things get hectic. It just helps keep me fired up for what's up ahead. I love this outfit BTW. I think it was outfits like this that converted me to a die-hard belter.

haha i love this post title. the boots are perfect - i love the distressed look that isn't purposeful. like i dont like buying those distressed jeans for 200 bucks because i can just do that myself after wearing them a couple of times.

I've been reading your blog for quite a while, but I just started graduate school, and find myself frequently thinking about your outfits nowadays for inspiration. Definitely liking this one as we transition into fall!

Nobody does gorgeous fall layers quite like you, my dear!

beth--i'm not sure what the specifics are, i got them last year, they came in a pack of three...come to think of it maybe they are from old navy? anyway, someone sells a whole bunch of them.

learned lady--i use my kindle 100% for fun, not at all for dissertation or research. i optimistically put a few diss books/pdfs on it, but honestly i hate reading for work on the kindle. you can't flip back and forth easily, your notes are all hidden, the highlight feature is unsatisfying...altogether it is definitely not worth is for academic work (though sometimes i'll carry books as back-ups). mostly i've used to to read non-fiction and extra fiction that i don't have space for on my bookshelves and probably won't need career-wise (i am such a bibliophile that i can't afford to keep books for fun in my ever-dwindling bookshelf space).

oops--not worth "it" for academic work. also, i don't know much about the kindle fire, though christopher was telling me about it yesterday. the ipad seems to recreate the book 'feeling' a bit better, although my main beef with electronic readers is that it's difficult to flip back and forth quickly or to hold open two pages at once, or to zoom back to a previous chapter to check on something. it's possible to do so, of course, but it's laborious and irritating.
phew, hope this helped!

Thanks so much for your insights on the e-reader experience!!! Reading for fun is definitely a different experience than reading for academia...I think I'll have to play with an e-reader more in person before I make any definitive decision.
