Sensible Shoes

sensible shoes

sensible shoes
works cited: dress c/o spotted moth; dansko clogs; thrifted belt and bag

These shoes are incredibly practical, provide good arch support, and are comfortable for miles of walking, which makes me suspect they could be categorized by my mother's aphorism about her closet: "never in style, never out of style." But Christopher told me the danskos were his favorite pair in my closet, and THEN two 13 year-old girls stopped me on the street and complimented my shoes, asking me where I got them, and THEN my super-chic tattooed hair-cutter was wearing a pair of open-toed Danskos. Plus, they've been on the Sartorialist. Have the tides turned? Are sensible shoes acceptable--nay, perhaps even stylish--in public? Or am I skewed by being in the company of nerds?
P.S. They no longer make this exact style, but here are three others I like as much if not more than my own pair: 1, 2, 3.

Your mother speaks wise words. And yes, your clogs are sweet as can be and comfy too so that's a whole lot of awesome.

I've been thinking about buying a pair of danskos recently, I think you may have convinced me!

They are super cute, but are they really comfy? I'm planning on doing student teaching within the year, and I need a pair of cute and comfy shoes to keep my feet from screaming all day!

I really think they are! Maybe with ballet flats and TOMS becoming so popular, people are finally starting to realize that cute doesn't always have to be painful!

Ha, ha ... I remember the last time you wore these & mentioned how they gave good arch support ...

elegantly academic--ha, i know! i know the sensible shoe thing doesn't appeal to everyone, but for me there are no more stylish words than "arch support"

modest typewriter vintage--yes!! they are super super comfortable and supportive--great arch support, no blisters (and i get them all the time), very comfy footbed. i swear by these!

They're my must-buy this season! And yes, I think the tides have turned. Phew.

I've got the same Danskos! Mine are red suede, very comfy, and make me happy. =) I think if you wear them right (as in, make sure your pants are long enough!) they can be really cute and funky. They do fit in really well with the 70s style things that are popular right now too, which might be why they're suddenly so popular...

I think Danskos are up there with Chacos and Birkenstocks as shoes that are 'so ugly they are cute'. They are the English Bulldogs of the shoe world.
Practical shoes are totes worth it.

I think it has a lot to do with the fact that those shoes go with your overall style so perfectly--simple, chic, with a design twist here and there. You gravitate towards well-made items that can be worn a bunch of diff. ways. If your overall look is cohesive, questions of 'in fashion' or not tend to fade away. congratulations, you officially have a 'look'!! ;) (but you knew that right? you've been successfully cultivating this look for a while now...) xo

I do think that Danskos have a nerdy reputation, and I just watched Staci and Clinton harass a woman for hers. I however, want to wear mine at all times and am even considering a third pair.

I think comfort is always in! As long as you style it correctly, of course! That dress is beyond adorable! Next closet clean out, I'll take it off your hands! :D

I think practical shoes are totally wearable, especially if you style them right. They look super cute with your dress, for instance. And I do think they are similar to a lot of other "trendy" shoes/clogs right now. Danskos FTW!

I love this dress. The colors, the dots, the cut...I'm in heaven.

I love that you are wearing these with a dress. I just bought a pair of red clogs and I wasn't sure if they'd be ok with a dress or skirt.

I just snagged a rad pair of Dansko Sallys on eBay for a steal (yay!) and am SO psyched to wear the heck out of them. My classic Dansko clogs have gotten a beating in the 6 years I've worn them, and they still remain the most comfortable shoes I own. Function creates fashion, in this case. :)

I think it's about the outfit and how the shoes are styled. You paired these with perfect and complimentary pieces, and it makes them all the more cuter. :)

i know your post was about your shoes, but i love your dress... cute blog, today was my first visit but definitely not my last

Love the dress so much!

I don't own Danskos (yet) but I second Between Laundry Days on the Sallys - another cute Mary Jane style. They had them for a steal on Rue La La today ($30!) but they sold out fast. :-( Your cute outfits with Danskos have inspired me...I want a pair!

I'm a huge fan of the Marah and have a pair in brown and red. The red were my new "Back to School" (I'm a teacher) shoes.

Those are so cute, it's so hard to find a pair of shoes that give you really good arch support. I hate that we don't have Danskos here though :\

I love the three styles that you linked!!!

they look good on you but i'm scared to try them for myself.

I have a pair of paisley Danskos (gasp!) and I will love them till I die. Long live arch support.

Dansko's are the "bee's knees"! I am guilty of owning waaaaay to many pairs! Mary Janes, clogs, flip flops, sport clogs.....ummmm yes, that would be called an addiction. I second the comfy...walk forever statement, Not to mention they are super durable! I mow my yard and even have gone fishing in mine. Clean off the dirt, and wear them the next day! They are like the "stylish" energizer bunny of shoes! HA!

Those look like great shoes but holy pricetag. I really need to get over sticker shock when it's not even THAT expensive...

I've been on a quest for comfy shoes, and now I'm going to add Dansko to my list of contenders. You had me at "arch support." :)

Sensible shoes are definitely enjoying a moment! Plus, there are super cute clogs happening for ss 12 too so you may be on a roll with the babies!

I, um, have three pairs of Sallys. That same cordovan color you have, as well as black and beige. I pretty much live in them during sock season, but not during the summer because they hurt my feet without socks.

However, I just got a gorgeous pair of cherry-red Savannas, and they are quite comfortable without socks. The vamp isn't quite as tight, and that binding keeps them from cutting into my heel.

Not nearly as summery a look as the Sally/Stefanie style, but it's what works for me. :)

I have incredibly bad feet after years wearing flip flops, high heels, and other shoes with no arch support. I only wear Birkenstocks, Danskos, Clarks, and Born and put inserts in everything, no exceptions. I wish I'd been wearing them all along, so I wouldn't be thirty-two and walking like an old woman! I get compliments on my shoes and sandals all the time, but at this point in my life I could care less about what people think about what I wear. Rock the Danskos and Birks! Your feet will thank you.

I love my Danskos, especially my reddish brown Mary Janes! Considering I'm a fashion failure, the newfound love for "practical" shoes is beyond exciting. Funnily, I took my black clogs with me when I studied abroad, thinking I would immediately fit in. Not so much. While they may be increasingly more fashionable, they were still very American. ;)

Danskos have always been part of my style - I even have one pair that I've had since high school - over 10 yrs now (they're currently my gardening shoes, but still in good shape).

Maybe it's a coastal issue; I grew up in Alaska, and now live in Washington, and Danskos are definitely a wardrobe staple 'round these parts.

I hesitantly bought a pair of Dansko sandals at a consignment shop about a year ago- they just looked sooo... orthapedic? But they fit perfectly, and the price couldnt be beat, so they went home with me. I wear the hell outa them, and I think when I pair them with edited outfits they look great!

I actually bought a pair of clogs shortly after seeing that post on the Sartorialist.
