In my midwest university town, I felt perpetually overdressed, but D.C. has so many incredibly beautiful, well-dressed women that I feel joyfully like a very tiny fish in a sea of fashionable sharks (that simile went a bit off course, but you know what I mean). A few days ago, a girl walked by my building wearing a camel-colored skirt and black tank--it was such a simple, pretty combination and right away I knew I wanted to try it out. Today is the first day I am "back to work," so I spent the morning at a coffee shop (at Tryst, thank you for suggesting it!) doing research. Now I am refueling for an afternoon of conference calls and syllabus-prep for an online class I was offered at the last minute (hurrah I am extra-gainfully employed and not just dissertating all day long until I turn into Jack Nicholson from The Shining!).

I'm a bike-riding bookworm in DC trying to make better use of a sometimes-vanilla closet. You can read a little more about this blog

Now for the rest of the day I will have the image of very fashionable sharks in my head. Thank you for that. :)
Also, I LOVE this outfit. The combination is superb!
I love the leopard print flats with this. Happy to hear you seem to be taking to your new home, too :)
I am digging the black/camel combo. Camel is such a versatile color. Pretty sure it's my favorite neutral.
You look great, I'm sure you'll give those 'sharks' a run for their money :)
You look great! Glad to hear you are feeling somewhat at home in DC. Has anyone suggested Busboys and Poets? Worth checking out!
Such a gorgeous look, so simple, and SO stylish! I love seeing other stylish woman, it's just so wonderful & inspiring ...you fit in beautifully. xo veronika
I love this color combo, something about it feels very fresh.
I've been struggling to pair my similar skirt with something other than a white shirt, so this was a timely post. Thanks for thinking of me--you're so kind.
What a great look! I can already see that DC is going to be great at providing you with inspiration! And I might just have to go with a black and camel color combo soon too!

Congratulations at the job! Love this simple, yet chic combination!

What a pretty outfit! Love that skirt, too! I was just thinking about that particular color combo the other day, and how I don't wear it enough, if at all.
Gorgeous! The leopard print shoes are the perfect finishing touch.
I know I've said it about 10 times, but I have to say it once again...welcome to DC! I am seriously stoked to have such an awesome fashion blogger in town, and a nerd to boot!
aw, thanks, hannah!!
This really is a great classically chic combination. And I love the personal touch of the printed flats. Super adorable! Congratulations on a successful move and taking over the online class. Oh so exciting! :)

Welcome to the East Coast! If you ever want to come visit goats, let me know. ;)
Those flats are great! Very pulled together look.
Beige and black is always a classic combo. Looks adorable!

You look lovely Tania! The skirt is fab! I have been looking for a chiffon skirt and this one is perfect. I think I'm gonna order it! Does it run a bit small or is it true to size? The measurements on the website make it sound like it runs a bit small.
I'm glad you are enjoying your new neighborhood!
thanks, mel! this skirt runs small. i ordered a size up and it fits me perfectly.
I can't imagine all the inspiration you must be getting living in a big, fashionable city. I could use some in my small town, that's for sure!
This is so lovely! Cute thrift find on the purse.
Love this outfit! It's so simple yet so chic :) I'm glad you're settling in to D.C.
LOVE this. And you are a very pretty fish, indeed, in our city of sharks. And honestly--you must not be anywhere near a metro. The look of a "polyester suit plus tennies" is still very in style here!
The leopard flats are the perfect final touch. Best of all, I'm pretty sure I have pretty much everything to recreate this...hmmmmm....!
I've got those same leopard flats and I LOVE that tan color you've paired them with. It's so caramelly, rich, and hopefully perfect for dissertating in!

I think THIS outfit is my favorite outfit of yours yet! I love the color of the skirt and i love how you paired ir with the leopard flats to give it a bit of something.
I miss you already! You look as amazing as ever (one of my fave outfits, methinks), and you have such gorg new photo op locations. glad to hear things are going so well for you!

oh, good for you living in a town that inspires you now :) and yay that job! this move is gonna be so good for you :)
Love how flowy and feminine that skirt is without being too girly! And I used to have those flats - I wore them literally til they fell apart and my husband made me throw them out. They just go with everything!

What an exciting change! I'm a little envious. And definitely envious of this outfit! So great. And I love the background in this photo too. DC isn't just good for alleyways, apparently. :)
You totally fit right in to DC life!! Love this combo - the leopard flats just set it apart!
I feel like the fashionable shark imagery is one that needs illustration.
This is such a cute outfit. Glad to hear that DC is treating you well re: inspiration!
Oh I just LOVE that skirt!! I'm glad you're fitting into DC life, it's nice to be around well dressed people!
This look is perfect. I love how the leopard print pulls together the black and camel of the rest of your outfit. I'm glad you're transitioning well! Being extra-employed is always a good thing :)
Love the camel and the black! The waistband of your skirt looks perfect too and would act like a belt in most outfits. And I have those flat and absolutely adore them.
Tania, I'm so happy for you and C. May God bless you there in Washington DC. I hope everything goes right for you. I am sure you'll inspire as much as you get inspired by the women there. You're wonderful and your style is unique! I am cheering for you, ALWAYS! =)

Very pretty!! I know what you mean, I always feel cute in boring Tucson - but when I'm in a big city, I feel very bleh. I bet you look cute no matter what!
Bahaha @ Claire's comment. DC suits you SO WELL, Tania. Just looking at the pics from today and yesterday, you look like you are HOME! Here's to loads of romantic alleys, outfits, and coffee shop workdays in your future..
Oooh, yes ma'am! I love the simplicity of this outfit and the pop of animal print in the flats. If ever you were going to compete with well-dressed sharks, those shoes are the way to do it. :)
Have I mentioned that I miss your presence in the Midwest? Because I do. I miss it x 100000! :)
I absolutely love this outfit and now I want to copy it myself! :) Can't wait to see more of your inspiration interpretations!
What a gorgeous color combo. I sure wish I was living in a city with other people who thought about what they put on in the morning. I definitely feel over dressed every single day of my life.

OMG I love Tryst! You're making me miss home so much lol.
Aw, you have such a lovely blog :) I love this outfit. The skirt is adoreable!x
This skirt is calling my name.
If you ever yearn to feel overdressed again, hop on the metro to University of Maryland. We've got the college wardrobe going strong.
IF you are close enough to Tryst to study there, you must be living in the city. I might suggest thrift shopping at Frugalista in Mount Pleasant. You won't be sorry!
miss fellow midwest-to-dc, we should be friends!! i live about 4 blocks from tryst (and love it so much already). and i JUST walked by frugalista today--i'll definitely stop in on your recommendation. thank you XOXO
Busboys & Poets is a good suggestion...
