Hello, D.C. I like your alleyways.

Guys, we made it to DC! I'm alive! And halfway unpacked! And still without internet (except for a sliver of a signal I'm siphoning from one tiny corner of the apartment). And yesterday for the first time I actually got dressed in real clothes, which made me feel like less of a schleb and got me through unpacking the bedroom lickety split. There's a lot to catch up on but I'll have many more posts coming next week. In the meantime, I'll tell you that the best part of our apartment is the incredible alleyway behind it, which has a dozen different beautiful walls (brick, painted, wood, whitewashed, garage doors) which is basically a photo background paradise. I'm overjoyed about the variety and Christopher is just happy not to have to walk very far :)
P.S. If you're looking for a perfect summer-to-fall dress, might I humbly suggest that this one is awesome? It's an incredible orangey-pink color, looks great with sandals and flats but will also be perfect with boots and a cardigan in a couple months.

I love your dress! I was thinking of ordering it from ModCloth, but they say it runs big in some places so I wasn't sure about sizing. How do you find it runs? Thanks!

thanks, adrienne! i got a small, my usual size, and it is a tiny bit big in the sides (i might take it in about a half an inch with my sewing machine...or i might just leave it because it's only barely too big).
but i'd order it from spotted moth only because they ship faster and aren't ethically-sketchy like modcloth :). AND most of the time they have much lower prices (though on tulle stuff it's all uniform).

My favorite bloggers are all moving to DC and I don't live there anymore! Sad news for me and exciting for you guys! :)

LOVE the dress- and I hope you enjoy your gorgeous alley. And all of the other perfect photo opportunities you'll have!

Kimberly

Yay, glad you made it here! If you need a coffee break this weekend, hop on Metro, get off one stop north at Cleveland Park, and go to Firehook Bakery. In the back, they have a little hidden courtyard with a fountain, trailing vines, and tables where you can spend some quality time with a book or someone nice (I imagine Christopher probably qualifies!)

Welcome to DC! Let me know if you ever want to get together for a cup of coffee and an academic writing extravaganza.

Thanks for your help! I will go with my usual size and I'll give Spotted Moth a try, too. Welcome to D.C.!

You look so lovely in that dress! You must be so relieved to finally be in DC and (semi)unpacked. And hopefully you can get a steadier internet stream soon so you don't have to wander around the apartment looking for one or two bars!

Yay! I'm so envious of your new alleyway - I keep telling Chris that one of the things I'll be looking for in our next place is a good spot to take blog pictures. He rolls his eyes now, but I know it will be worth it to not have to trek all over Brooklyn in the snow next winter!

And I am definitely with you on feeling a boost of productivity from dressing up a little. :)

Just wondering why is Modcloth is a bit "ethically-sketchy"? They have cute stuff and it is way overpriced but I wasn't sure if there was anything more to it.

Welcome Welcome Welcome to DC!!! Get settled soon so that you can come travel around to the other side of the Potomac soon :) :) Good luck and enjoy getting settled in to the city!

Congrats on moving to DC! I'm applying to law school out there-- it's such a great, young, hip city, full of life. My sister lived there for 5 years (in Georgetown and then Adams Morgan), and we'd have phenomenal Ethiopian food every time I came to visit (if you like Ethiopian, you moved to the right city-- if you've never had it, go try it!).

WELCOME TO DC! I'm glad you're settling in, and I can't wait to hear about your adventures around my city. It's such a fantastic town--I think you're going to love it here. (PS--LOTS of grad students in this city, with lots of coffeehouses, etc. to study. Let me know if you need suggestions!)

I want to echo the question from anonymous above: why is modcloth sketchy? Thanks! =)

anons--at times, i've found their corporate ethics leave something to be desired, with their poor oversight about some of their product write-ups (in particular, one that advanced a colonialist fantasy which showed very little regard for the historical trauma of colonization), and an inadequate response to what seem to me fair criticisms. and yes--overpriced, to the point of hilarity, which speaks to me of other problems.

appreciate the insight. =)
