Happy First Day of School!

first day of school

first day of school

first day of school
works cited: anthro shirt (gift from my little sister several years back); skirt c/o ruche; target wedges

A lot of schools are starting this week, and mine is no exception. Even though I relocated to DC, I was lucky enough to get offered an online course (thank you, staffing shortage) along with my fellowship for the fall, so yesterday was my first day of teaching. Teaching online is a very different format than my other first days, but I still had to get dressed in order to feel prepared and confident enough to tackle the intimidating virtual classroom programs. Later, Christopher told me that his career counselor encouraged him to put on his suit even for phone interviews; evidently being dressed for the situation really helps you get in the right mindset, even if nobody at the other end can see your high heels or tie. Happy first day/week of teaching to all you other students and teachers out there! Hope it is a good one and nobody throws up on their shoes like I always feel like doing on the first day :)
P.S. I've gotten a couple questions about this skirt--it runs small, if you're thinking of getting it. I ordered a size up for a perfect fit.

This skirt is beyond flattering on you!

When I work from home and I am not dressed up, I am much less productive. Dressing up really does help.

TOTALLY agree on the ":dressing up for the part idea. Which is why I rarely write in sweatpants, even if I want to.

You look gorgeous and confidant. Happy first day!

This is such a pretty skirt and you're right: being dressed the right way certainly helps. It's why we wore our formal uniforms last year to sit our Year 12 exams.

Such a great skirt! Classes don't start up here until next Thursday but I'm already planning what I'll wear for the first day, especially since I'll be teaching Ancient Greek history (not even close to being anywhere near my area of expertise) and want to feel extra authoritative that first day.

Love this outfit, especially with the contrasting black belt. I like your sentiment re: dressing the part even if nobody can see you. I'm spending most of my time writing a chapter, so getting dressed puts me in a good mindset ... As opposed to writing in sweats.

LOVE the skirt and whole look. I completely agree---I dressed up a bit for my first day, even though jeans would've been completely acceptable.

I love that outfit! I really love the colors of fall, and school! Too bad my first day of classes aren't as exciting. I have to wear scrubs to anatomy class, or something that i can get dirty in lol.

My first day of class was rather disappointing, the earthquake cancelled all but one! I'm taking one online class and then two hybrids...I'm not a huge fan of online classes, I like seeing the teachers, but I've enjoyed the ones I've taken so far! You are going to do great!

Love the idea of putting on a suit for phone interviews. Brilliant!

Also drooling over that skirt.

I know what you mean about the feeling you get before school! I'll be a fifth year teacher (we start after labor day) and I've been queasy for a few weeks. I'm excited, but nervous! :) You look so pretty ... I was told the same thing as Christopher about phone interviews. Good luck today!

That skirt look lovely on you!

And I agree about clothes changing your mindset. That's why even when I'm just home alone with my Baby I try to put together an outfit. That way I feel more like a woman.

This skirt looks lovely on you. I've heard about 'dressing up for a phone interview' before (although it didn't really work for me ;) But dressing up for online classes is a great idea too!

so pretty :) i bet that outfit made a wonderful first impression, even if it only was online.

I love your skirt! So flattering on you and the color is superb.

I can totally see that getting dressed helps you out even if no one can see you. When I linger to get dressed on the weekends, I just feel ugh. When I am dressed though, it's like "look out world, here comes mama!"

You always look incredible. I am in love with this outfit... and the dress the part even if they can't see you idea is fantastic; I totally agree!

Of course, your outfit is great! But I really want to comment that you wear an bun sooo effortlessly. I've been practicing with various buns and updos to be professional but still cute and this is inspiring on that front.

I know...you take the time to get dressed, and I love your messy bun the most! :)

thanks, mel! it's such an easy hide-that-dirty-hair trick...i'm lazy and do it way more often than i probably should!

Love the look Tania! This skirt is amazing on you! Thanks for answering my question on sizing the other day. I got it in the mail a few days ago and fits perfectly. I only hope it looks half as good on me as it does on you!

I think the way we dress does affect our performance/confidence (even if no one sees the outfit. During these last few weeks of dissertating I wore my PJ's and sweats for days in a row. Then I realized it was putting me in a funk! Had to force myself to get dolled up and go to the coffee shops. Productivity definitely went up! :)

Hooray for back-to-school! I am envious - I am still having a hard time getting used to the idea that I won't be starting classes again, despite graduating over a year ago. Hopefully I can find a way to teach again in the next few years so I can get that new-semester thrill again. :)

I am definitely a believer in the power of one's garb to influence performance - just this morning I was feeling completely overwhelmed and stressed out over my spiraling-out-of-control to-do list, so I forced myself to stop working, wash my face and brush my hair, switch PJs for a button-down, jeans and heels, and even take a few minutes to put on fun nail polish. Now I'm back at it (well, admittedly taking a little blog-reading break) and feel much more prepared to get things done now that I've taken a few minutes to take care of myself and re-center.

That outfit is very flattering on you. You look super professional!

I agree that you have to get dressed, even when you aren't doing anything. I work in education, so I have the summers off. I try to still get dressed every day, makeup, jewelry and all, even when I'm doing nothing! It just makes me feel better about myself.

i started teaching this week as well (i teach full-time at a university). finding something professional AND stylish to wear is so much harder now because i'm pregnant! i'm mostly limited to an ugly pair of maternity pants, and dresses, dresses, dresses. i love dresses but only a few work with my huge bump. it's rough :)

This skirt might be my favorite item I've seen of yours, I literally oooh-ed out loud when I saw it! I've heard the same thing about getting dressed for phone interviews to get yourself in the right frame of mind. Good luck with your online class and happy first week back to you! :)

WOW! I'm so glad I stumbled on a site with "teaching outfits" that look chic and gorgeous at the same time! Been looking all over the fashion blog world for teaching outfits but haven't seen any that looks "teacher-y" but fabulous at the same time. Yours is the first one I love!
