A Very Merry Grad Student Weekend

very merry grad student

very merry grad student

very merry grad student
works cited: dress c/o ruche; j. crew cardigan and belt; target flats

If there's anyone left on the internets late on a Friday afternoon before a 3-day weekend, I have two things to say: I'm sorry that you're not outside and this is what I'm wearing today. The reason I am still shackled to my laptop late in the day is because I have loads of work to do in the next week. An academic schedule is a flexible one, but its flexibility is accompanied by the merciless you-should-always-be-working grad student voice. "Shall we go tubing?" says fun Tania. "How about you finish reading those articles first," says grad student voice. "How about barbecuing in the backyard?" suggests fun Tania. "But don't you want to finish grading that stack of papers?" the grad student voice counters. Worst of all is when fun Tania suggests taking an afternoon off. That's when grad student voice pulls out the big guns, "I bet [insert any other neurotic grad student colleague's name here] has been working since dawn." She's a slave driver, I tell you.

Neurotic Tania is no fun! Let fun Tania reign free whilst wearing unexpected color combinations (this one is going straight into my inspiration folder).

Grad student voice in my head: "See! Other grad students are clearly working Friday night and it's not even that late here....so stop reading blogs and go work!"

I love these colors together! So fabulous. And the color coming over the cardigan is darling. I sadly, am not outside due to a sunburn. I'm afraid of making it worse! Sad day. Have a fabulous weekend!

Pardon me... Collar. Not color. I was too distracted by that fabulous combination to get that one right.

rebecca--aw, feel better!! i sunburn so easily, too; i spent half of my maine vacation inside trying not to get sun poison. oh well!
and theresa--at least one other grad student is playing on blogs and not working :)

Aw, hope fun Tania and the grad student voice can come to a compromise! Unfortunately I'll be spending the holiday weekend chained to my laptop studying.

I'm just about ready to head home and then out to the MFA for their First Fridays event---which should be really cool! But yes, definitely stuck in til late on a Friday night before a non-three-day-weekend-because-I'm-a-grad-student-that-works-with-things-that-are-alive. I don't even get to have a fun Bridget, cause otherwise my experiments would just die. Le sigh.

bridget--this cracked me up! my sister works in a lab so i know she has that feeling all the time. killer!

Sadly just another weekend for us in "the old country". Love the colour combo of the blue and orange.

oh, go tell that grad student voice to sit on it. have fun this weekend guilt free!

i'm inside right now, cause i'm in the time zone that means it's midnight and dark out. still lame that i'm sitting at home on a friday night, but hey, i like to just curl up and read sometimes, alright?

Just so you know, that voice doesn't go away once you have a PhD....

I love that color combo!

Oh dear - I have to admit to laughing a little as I read this, because it is so spot-on. I remember that constant struggle, and I do not miss it. One. Bit.

But on the upside, I am pretty sure fun Tania has completely commandeered your sartorial decisions, because you have been rocking it all week and, as icing on the cake, this colorful look is just a magnum opus of awesome!

What Would a Nerd Wear said...

ha, thanks, emily!!! and yeah, i feel a surge of pride myself. i am practically to other-emily-color-mixing-genius abilities this week :)

You really should stick it to the man, "grad student Tania" in this case, and enjoy the weather/holiday weekend. You look great. I love this color combo.

Well I think fun tania should get a bit of leeway, is she works hard, then she deserves some fun time too!

aw boo! well, I work in a hospital and unfortunately (or fortunately?) I am working until late tonight and all day tomorrow..I just keep telling myself that everywhere will be extra crowdy anyways hehe. Love the simple but pulled together look!

Rosiecat said...

Hee hee! I'm laughing because everything you said is so true. And Like Raquelita said above, it definitely does not go away once you have a PhD. But at least the pay gets a little better :-)

Fun Tania should totally win something. I know my weekend will be lackluster and involve too much organic chemistry reading. Oh well. Life sometimes... I love that color combo! So refreshingly great.

I've been following your blog for a while now, but I haven't commented until now... does that make me creepy? I hope not. I really like your style and the little glimpse into your life as a grad student.

I love this post because my inner grad student voice sounds just like yours! And I'm one of those "works-with-things-that-are-alive" grad students :) so I'll be in lab this weekend.

I swear, everyone is in a layering-dresses-with-tops thing this week. It's so adorable though, I don't mind seeing it everywhere. This color combo in particular is divine!

Ha, ha ... this is my life (even in weekends). Damn that academic voice, she always gives me serious guilt trips - like right now she is saying "DO WORK!" ... pft, ok ...

PS LOVE your cardigan!

meanwhile, i adore this outfit. That colour mixing is awesome. i never would have thought to put those together, and yet they go soo well!!

You don't make me miss grad school! And here I am free of school trolling blogs on a Friday night! I am happily perched on my couch in my jammies, happy to relax! You look adorable...and I think a little combination of fun and student Tania is a healthy combination!

My grad student voice sounds just like yours! And I have to say, she's my least favorite part of being in school.

Love today's color combo! I wouldn't have thought of it, but it looks great.

Wow, this made me feel so much better about my lame weekend plans of studying for the GRE... I'm not even IN grad school yet and it's already killing my social life! Thanks for making us nerds feel a little less alone.

Your bracelets are perfect with that outfit!

well, if it makes you feel better i'm working most of the weekend!!

i love that cardi over the blue dress!

i love this outfit to bits, tania! you look really beautiful. lately i've taken to combing through your archives for sartorial inspiration - this outfit is definitely being catalogued into a little spot in my brain.

(and i totally get it about the nagging voice. though i am not a grad student yet, i feel it gnawing at my brain already. one of my friends and i were saying that it actually might be nice to have a nine-to-five job, just because that sets perameters to one's working day (work being confined to a time and place, and not just existing as a result of your own productivity at home, at work, at school, etc.). but then again, of course, i wouldn't want to be anything but a student.

anyway, enough rambling - you look great, have a wonderful weekend!

Grad student voice rules my life, too. I'm glad I'm not the only one! Fortunately I work with small children as my subjects, so they don't want to get EEGs over the holiday weekend (and unlike lab animals they have a choice ;)). That's a lovely color combo!

Love the color combo. Very J. Crew. :)

eugh, i hate my inner student voice, she's always right...it's nasty, so i totally sympathise! plus i love the bright pop of colour in the collar peeping over your cardie. So cute. Keep with it, summer will be here soon! xXx

ha, these comments are cracking me up! i am so glad not to be the only neurotic person working over a holiday weekend...i feel like we should have an e-working date all together or something.
maud--that's so kind of you to say and such a big compliment, so thank you thank you!!
courtney--thank you so much for commenting; i'm delighted that you did!

Heather - Inner cupcake said...

An e-working date would be awesome! Haha, it's like you're inside my head- I have a lot of time sensitive experiment things to do in lab this weekend, so fun Heather is getting smothered as much as possible. I have promised her one afternoon off for a fourth of July pool party though (mostly because I might be hosting it) and I'm placating her today by wearing fun new sandals with a pretty dress, even though I'm in a lab on a sunny Saturday. Plus she got her bike fixed today, so she should consider herself set for the weekend.

oh coincidence--I just picked up that very same cardi in a thrift shop here 2 weeks ago. Its so great to see all the different ways you've worn it! Its a lovely color, but I was having trouble moving beyond gray/white tops. That blue is wonderful. Thanks!

Love the combo of colors - wouldn't have thought to pair aqua blue and mustard, but it really works!

I love all the different combinations. The cardigan I love, though sadly, the color is not in my palette of wearable hues.

Found your blog through Elegant Musings and love it! Looking forward to reading your posts. Happy Sunday! ☺

I'm not even taking any classes this summer but Grad Student Lauren has me pre-reading my pharmacokinetics text book for the fall. Talk about fun. I guess when you're so used to working and studying all the time it becomes difficult to turn that part of your brain off and relax.

Kati said...

Oh! I missed this post (and the comments)-- had to come back when you mentioned the grad-student themed comments ;)

I'm doing fieldwork in anthropology, and my inner grad student voice is very confused with the change of venue. Suddenly the line between work and play is very blurry. Unfortunately for me, this tends to mean *everything* feels like work. Reading blogs is an excellent "vacation," though!! :)

amanda said...

I feel your pain! I am in the final stages of dissertation publication, sorting through round after round of formatting revisions. The fact that you look so adorable despite the never-ending stream of work is quite an accomplishment!

S.E.Minegar said...

ah, the graduate school guilt. it's always there to nag and make you feel ashamed for having fun!

mine made me take an unplugged summer (from blog reading), refrain from movie watching, and stop working (on work stuff) from home...but here i am ashamed as ever for 10 minutes of web surfing.

dare i pause to breathe after my last exam? we'll see.
