Repeat After Me

repeat after me

repeat after me

repeat after me
works cited: emersonmade dress; thrifted belt; old F21 earrings; volcom sandals

Many of the blogs I read express an interest in wearing and re-wearing pieces of clothing in a variety of different ways (mine is no exception). I like figuring out different ways to wear a top or dress or fun pair of wedges, and  I love getting ideas about how to wear old pieces in new ways. It makes my closet feel bigger. But I think there's also something to be said about wearing garments you love and feel great in on repeat. The other day, I was talking on the phone with my most stylish friend (yes you, Jen) who said to me, "I repeat the same outfit or the same kind of outfit all the time. And I look good all the time because of it." Jen is excruciatingly careful about the pieces that she adds to her wardrobe, and everything in her closet is beautiful, high-quality, and fits her perfectly. And she does look great all the time, because everything she wears suits her, even if she wears the same pieces on repeat. It made me think about this dress, which is beautifully-made and always makes me feel pretty. I've worn it a lot on the weekends and to special events this summer but haven't made an effort to photograph it because I've worn it almost the same way every time. Although I may not be particularly innovative about how I wear this dress, I'd like to think innovation isn't always the object when getting dressed, especially when I feel great wearing it, no matter how many times I repeat.

Love it. I think one of the reasons personal style blogs are useful and inspirational is that we show how our clothes are really worn, including repeats!

Good advice. Doing the 30 for 30 has made me realise what I really love & what I feel a bit meh about. I think I need to have a clear out & just have those things I love, which iI feel good in.

I'm really hurt that I am not your most fashionable friend. Once, Jen and I had a competition for who could look most like Sienna Miller, and I won.

I love this dress. As much as I try to wear things differently, there are a few pieces I wear exactly the same every time because there's no better way to wear it.

I repeat outfits all the time. If I find something that looks good on me, why not keep going with it? I think it's easier to repeat outfits in the summer too - without layers, you don't have as many options, so my style in general is a lot more laid-back. That dress is adorable and I'd wear it all the time, too!

Yes! If you have something that you feel great in and makes you look fabulous definitely repeat, repeat and repeat again! :)

Thanks for saying something other bloggers try to avoid! Honest and well-written.

aw, courtney, thank you for your kind words!
maggie, you know what, i think you're right. i should revise this. jen, one of my two most fashionable friends (the other, maggie, looks more like sienna miller than jen does AND was featured on a dog's-point-of-view style blog). i think there's no question you belong in the top two.
P.S. i have great news about next year eeee!

Amen. This is exactly why I wear skinny jeans, boots, and a cardigan whenever possible.

Well said, Tania! As in cooking, perhaps innovation is a little bit overrated :-) If it looks (or tastes) good, why reinvent the wheel? xo

I absolutely love repeating my outfits. But changing a few items. Blogging has so helped me to do this.

This dress is very lovely.

I definitely agree! It's great to remix and in doing so sometimes we come across some wonderfully unexpected outfits; however, it's perfectly okay to repeat those stellar outfits often. It would be silly not to!

I love this dress. And I agree, there are just some things in our closets that make us feel beautiful, no matter what. Love!

Well said. Viva la repeats!

I'm sure we all have a 'uniform' that we wear over and over until we discover the next thing we're ready for. I have a friend that calls me Bart Simpson b/c when I find an outfit that works, I stick with it. Ha. (this could be any cartoon, I guess). I think the important thing is to find balance - Wear what makes you comfortable and confident but push yourself, even if just a little bit, to make slight variations so that you continue to grow with your style. Thanks for a great post, Tania!

I don't think it should matter if you wear the same dress in the same way alot because if you like it, then you should wear it as often as you like. No one should be the judge of how or what you should wear! Wear it proud!

There's nothing wrong with repeating the same outfit. It seems like a rather modern American idea that it is shameful / shabby / cheap / whatever to do so. Many bloggers claim to admire French style because of its simplicity, versatility and quality over quantity, yet so many bloggers only give lip service to "remixing." So, kudos to putting it into action. "And I look good all the time because of it" -- I like that! :)

That's wonderful dress! :) Well said, I think it's best to wear things that make you feel great. And I love repeats! Whenever I find an outfit I love, I just want to wear it over and over again.

I'm with you there! Especially in the summer, when I seem to gravitate toward the same few dresses, I'm all about repeats. Love this dress!

Love that dress. Isn't is supposed to be 100 degrees in the mid-west? How do you pull off looking so cool and comfortable?

Here, here! I absolutely agree. Find a outfit combo that work, repeat it & feel great!

Hey Tania,

What a goregous dress, I think you wear it perfectly!! In fact, you should submit it to The Wear To Go Girls FB Page for their "Look of the Week"!! Check it out here at http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Wear-to-go-Girls/138631736207424... There's tons of outfit inspiration and yours would be perfect to add to the mix.

All the best.

This is a good reminder. Variety is nice, but there's something to be said for consistency too, yes? Especially if one can look consistently awesome. Nothing wrong with that! Great dress :)

I love this post. Repeating is key and feeling great in something makes the ensemble that much more appealing!

Thank you for sharing this! I always feel like I need to change things up and wear things in different ways (which I really truly love to do). But sometimes, something is perfect the way it is. I have this beautiful Grecian blue maxi that I've worn once and posted pictures of. I know that when I wear it again I SHOULD change it up some how, but honestly, I feel great in it the way it is and feel like it would be wrong to layer over it or cover it up in anyway. I love how your friend Jen put it. I am going to try to adopt that philosophy a little more into my dressing habits.

I love your belt, I have one just like it and I wear it with EVERYTHING. Okay I lied, maybe not with everything but the love part is truly legit.

I definitely have a few outfits that I wear on repeat because they're so comfy, or I just love the way they look.

And you're totally right...getting dressed doesn't always have to be about innovation or remixing. Sometimes it's nice to stick with the tried-and-trues :)

(Thanks for the sweet comments on my last few posts, by the way. Made me smile!)

Amen to that! I often have to stop myself thinking "Oh, I can't wear that skirt and this shirt with those shoes again - even if its my current favourite combination - because people will know I'm an outfit repeater!" But really, if you look good and you feel comfortable in it, who cares?

And you look beautiful in this dress. It's PERFECT for you.
