While belts are my most beloved style accessory (if by "accessory" you mean "crutch on which I am hopelessly dependent"), other add-ons like necklaces, bracelets, and summer scarves continue to intimidate me. This year, I have become affectionate with chunky necklaces, but still wearing any other kind of accessory with one feels like overkill to my accessory-deprived sensory system, despite how much I might like the look on other people. Today's necklace, for instance, I love, but requires me to remove every other piece of jewelry before I feel comfortable. I guess I am a one-accessory kind of lady, monogamous to my single piece of flair. Let's just say Coco Chanel's advice--"look in the mirror and take one thing off"--would leave an accessory-phobe looking even more vanilla than she is typically prone to.

I'm a bike-riding bookworm in DC trying to make better use of a sometimes-vanilla closet. You can read a little more about this blog

I am phobic of wearing too many accessories. Like if I'm wearing earrings i can't wear a necklace, and vice versa. I only let myself pick 2 things... necklace, earrings, bracelets, or rings. I feel like 3 of those would be overkill. So you aren't weird.
I know that Coco is famous for that statement, but if you look at pictures of her she is usually covered in brooches, scarves, rings, necklaces, hats, gloves etc.
I still haven't gotten over my aversion to big accessories. I always feel like I'm overdoing it, even if I'm just wearing one accessory! But I love how you keep it simple here and let the necklace stand out...you pull it off very well!
What? I thought I was the only one that felt this way! Don't even get me started on earrings. I just can't wear them because I feel so over dressed, despite having my ears pierced since I was 8. My phobe also depends on the season ... winter is for scarfs & all my accessories gather dust.

I make half of my living making jewelry, so it's probably weird that I don't wear a lot of jewelry either. Less is more!
With a necklace as big as this one, you're right to let it stand on its own. It looks great!
ha, glad to know i'm not alone! steffy, i'm completely the same way. i have a weird aversion to even wearing two rings at the same time.
anna, i know! that's why she gave the advice--because she was never at risk of being accessory-less if she took one of her thirty pieces of jewelry off.
I'm a one accessory girl, as well. No worries.
I know what you mean! I've tried to wear a necklace, earrings and a bracelet at the same time but it always feels like too much and I end up removing a piece eventually!

This is why I love tiny stud earrings, especially sparkly ones and pearls. They make my ears feel dressed up without being too much, and I can add another accessory too! Wristwatches also keep me from the overpowered-by-accessories feeling because they are practical.
I can totally relate, although sometimes I feel like I just don't know what to do with accessories, so I just don't buy them!
such a pretty, summery skirt. i also love that necklace - adrianna has the best accessories!
I feel the same way. I'll put on a necklace AND earrings and go, "Augh, can't wear both! They're too close together." There's something about the proximity. Long earrings and a bracelet? Okay because the bracelet is physically farther from the earrings. Weird? Maybe. LOL
bookishpenguin--no, not weird! actually i think proximity is such a great way to understand it. and it explains why i can wear earrings and a bracelet--they are far from one another.
The necklace is the perfect accessory for this crisp, clean look! Just lovely!

I agree with thisdesertlife about earrings... I wear small studs alot and don't feel like they "count" towards the accessories that I'm wearing. Especially if I have my hair down and they only peek through.
Proximity is also another valid point! Rings AND bracelets are a big no-no for me, unless they are on opposite hands... and even then...
I've been wading deeper into the accessories pool lately (from a zero-accessory policy in college), and I'm finding that I feel more comfortable when I wear just one statement piece and back off on the other accessories. Like if I wear a big necklace, I wear small earrings. Or if I wear big earrings, I don't wear a necklace, etc., etc. I love how you've done the necklace in these pictures - it adds to the outfit nicely without overwhelming it.

ditto on all of the above comments. I feel like I only can really handle earrings. And in photos, they don't really show up. But you got this girl, you rock those accessories!
I say, life is too short for boring jewelry! But I'm a cultural anthropology student, so my opinion on big weird accessories probably can't be trusted.
That being said...I kind of think the majority of street style bloggers are way over-accessorized (or maybe this is just the current trend?). If you're used to seeing people who don't leave home without 35 bracelets, 4 rings, 5 layered necklaces, and a scarf, well of course you're going to feel naked by comparison!
Well I think adding that necklace was just the right touch for an accessory-phobe. You look very pretty in this outfit as well.
Great skirt Tania! Is that newish Jcrew, or from awhile ago?
thanks, anon! it's newish and a few of the colors are on sale now. here's a link: http://www.jcrew.com/womens_category/skirts/solids/PRDOVR~37781/37781.jsp
I love this skirt on you Tania! It's so pretty and it emphasizes your tiny waist!
I hear ya on the accessories.I'm the same way. Too many and I feel uncomfortable!
Love the necklace today. Somehow it's just perfect with your outfit.

I feel like accessories are always an afterthought for me... I've bought many statement necklaces and dangly earrings over the years, but for some reason I seem to forget them when I'm getting dressed in the morning. Perhaps I'm a little accessories-phobic, too? Hmm...
I'm accessories phobic too... and to be honest, I kind of think over-accessorized looks can make one like like a crazy fashion blogger (which I already feel a bit silly about doing anyway).
I really like the green shoes with the all blue outfit - more interesting that way!
Personally, I'm all about the accessories - but the subtle addition of one item is SO you. I love how you have one piece that is the focus and there is nothing else to distract from that. It's a great look. - Katy
I'm the same with with accessories. I've been trying to change since I started blogging, but when it comes down to it I'd rather buy a new shirt than a necklace!
I'm envious of people that can pull of multiple accessories. I think you rock the simple-chic look really well, too, though. So don't feel like you aren't accessorizing enough.
That necklace is beautiful and I LOVE how belts are like your signature piece!

I agree with some of the others - belts are your thing and you do them so well! I'm trying to wear more belts with dresses and skirts, I usually only wear belts with pants and jeans. I always wear earrings and a silver watch, and put a necklace most times too.
I think the other thing you wear so well is your shoes. Not exactly accessories, we all need to wear shoes! I'm envious of all your wedges - peep-toe ones and sandal styles, especially the Clarks ones. Could you suggest somewhere to look for these online, or do mostly thrift these?
My best,
Belinda.
loving the skirt. x
Despite whatever you may think about accessories, this necklace still looks gorgeous on you and it does add a certain amount of spice to your outfit. Also, the shoes: so so so nice.
thanks, louise!
belinda, i get all my clarks shoes online. you can find great deals on them at 6pm.com (though you might have to wait and check back to find your size). these particular ones i got using a zappos giftcard i won in a giveaway (wahoo!).
I know how you feel! I don't think I will ever be one of those people to layer tons of bangles or necklaces together. I love seeing it on other people but it doesn't translate well for me! I love this outfit :)
I do the same thing--I am a minimalist with my accessories. I've been trying to accumulate more statement pieces to decorate myself a little more. :)
Oh gosh, I am exactly the same. I feel really, really odd when I have more than one accessory on - I have to change them around when deciding on an outfit until it feels right! I'm super jealous of ladies like Kendi and Tieka that accessorize so well.
You assembled this outfit perfectly, and I ADORE this chunky necklace on you. :)
