On the Road

works cited: most comfortable dress ever c/o five bamboo; necklace that blends into my skin from macy's; enormous floral wedges c/o ruche

This last weekend, Christopher and I took a few days off, left our laptops at home and spent some time wandering around Chicago together to celebrate C's defended dissertation. I wore this on the drive there, because there is nothing like a soft dress for a roadtrip. A quick scary story about our drive to Chicago: when we left town, it was bright and sunny and as we drove along the highway, we saw humongous black clouds in the distance. As we got closer to the dark bank of clouds, we saw a funnel cloud and a tornado start to form on the side of the highway, a mere 100 yards from our car! It looked a lot like this and the funnel was rotating like crazy (meanwhile, I was hyperventilating). Even though we saw that cloud start to dissipate, we still drove like the dickens away from it down the highway until it started to pour and hail so heavily that we couldn't see. We pulled over near an overpass and waited it out (my heart was beating so fast as the hail pelted the car). Luckily, the storm passed over us in just a few minutes and we drove on without a problem, but it was a wicked scary moment! I know we're incredibly fortunate compared to so many people in North Carolina and Alabama right now--I can't imagine how terrifying it must have been.

That is a gorgeous dress! And how scary that must have been being that close to a funnel cloud.

Love the shoes! I wore this same thing this weekend but with a cardi and flat peep toes. I need to get my life together.

I love that dress! Can I ask how tall you are? I love all the Five bamboo Dresses you model. They look super comfy, but I'm never sure if they'll be long enough to be work-appropriate for me.

Simple is best when traveling and you look so cute doing it! The black dress fits well and I love the cut!

anonymous--i'm 5'7. i suspect this dress (the elusive) would definitely be long enough for work and so would the blueberry dress, but the artemis dress probably not. hope this helps, feel free to email me if you have more questions!

I love the simplicity of this outfit, until you get to the bottom and you see your amazing shoes!

I'm glad you're okay. I live in North Carolina, but luckily my hometown and my university are both in Western NC. My sister wasn't so lucky- her house took a little bit of damage- but that's nothing compared to the entire towns that are suffering. It's so sad, isn't it? Nature is incredible and scary!

Oh my gosh! I am glad you are ok. I was in a tornado in Denver when I was little. I saw a mattress fly by our back window and freaked. My little sister, on the other hand, was disappointed to not end up in OZ. :-/

frannie--whoa that's crazy!! and man, if only tornadoes really deposited you in OZ...i'd have been a lot less scared :)

Unfortunately I was in a similar tornado situation just about two weeks ago when I was in Tennessee. We didn't actually see the tornado, but my friends and I were out looking for somewhere to eat(because we had lost power)and it started to really storm and hail. Scary times!

That sounds terrifying!!!!! I'm really glad you are both okay, hopefully you guys were able to enjoy the rest of the day.

On a side note, LOVE the wedges!! Can you let me know how comfy they are?

lidi--they are medium comfy. the sole is padded and comfortable but i need to break in the straps still (a few band-aids have helped). as far as high shoes go, they aren't bad, but they definitely aren't as comfortable as my clarks wedges.

I grew up with tornado drills and severe storms like every month, but still - that is super scary. Whew.

You know what's not scary? The outfit. Perfect summer dress to live in during the warmer months!

I've only commented once or twice but I wanted to de-lurk to say, one, thank goodness you guys managed to stay a safe distance away from the tornado, and two, I almost fell over when I noticed your description of the flesh-blending necklace!

So glad you got there safely!! I went to Chicago to visit my boyfriend just a couple months ago.. I was instantly smitten with the city! I love your simple outfits-- it reminds me I don't need tons of accessories to feel cute, just simple versatile and classic pieces like a statement necklace and airy dress.

Those shoes are to die for. I'm drooling.

This is such a cute outfit! That dress fits you perfectly and really looks so comfortable, and those shoes are just lovely =)
Oh my goodness, that sounds so scary about the funnel cloud thing! It reminds me when I was flying across America once on a family holiday, and it was our 3rd flight out of 4 so we were all exhausted, and it was massively delayed due to a storm, but we didn't realize how bad the storm was till we eventually took off into 6 hours later and saw a funnel cloud out the window! I was so scared but trying to stop my little sister seeing it out the window!! So scary because we never have anything like that in the UK!!
