Why I Like Style Blogs

3/25

3/25

3/25
works cited: gap vest (gift from sister); target blouse; gap jeans; target boots; my mom's hand-me-down belt

The glossy, perfectly-curated, lit, and photographed magazine spreads feel like a double-edged sword. They are beautifully-done and inspire me to try new pairings, but they often leave me feeling not good enough, or rich enough, or hip-less enough (which is why I don't subscribe to magazines). It's also why I really love reading other people's style blogs--because they are a realistic look at just a regular person getting dressed in the morning. Sometimes an outfit works, and sometimes it doesn't, and one learns valuable things from each. Obviously, I'll never be as put together or glamorous as a magazine spread, but I learn more from seeing my own mediocre outfits photographed than I do from poring over the pages of Vogue. Often, I'll write about how I feel unsure about an outfit, but just as often, I try to put those feelings aside and see if there aren't things worth liking about any outfit--a color palette or an interesting silhouette that I might reuse in a way I like better next time. And this outfit is one of those--I love the vest that my sister sent me but I'm still trying to figure out how to wear it. Which reminds me of the other thing I like about style blogs--the interaction. Which is to say: do you have any ideas how to pair this vest? I'd be grateful for your suggestions!

Over an Am App scoop dress w/ a belt maybe?

Mariel said...

I'd wear the vest over a very long maxi dress and belt it like you did. Pair it with gladiator sandals, a big straw hat, hobo bag, sun glasses, a few chunky bangles.

Very well said about magazines!! You voiced exactly why I like blogging as well. Before I read the post, I thought "I am going to copy that look. I have all of the pieces to do it." So I think you styled is perfectly. I actually have a similar look on today with a maxi skirt from Anthro that is black and a bit heavy - but I like it. I haven't seen my OOTD pics yet so I don't know if I really like it. I should have my post up tonight sometime. Cheers!

I would wear it just the way you did! In fact before I read the comments, I was just thinking about what a great outfit it was.

Bridget said...

Belted dress with a loose vest. Just to try it! You are the master of belt-ery, but I think that it could fun just chilling there, too.

Elaine said...

Just what I needed to hear. Thanks.

I would pair it with a maxi skirt as well! (Sherry!!!) You should try it with a loose tank top with that vest belted like you did here and a flowy maxi skirt underneath and some cute sandals for a perfect summer outfit.. Not too long until then!

I agree with you on the topic of style blogs. I like that the outfits are actually attainable, like something that I can pull out of my own closet. That is exactly the reason I love your blog!

I'd probably wear the vest open over a black long sleeve shirt and black skinny jeans, with a bold, colorful necklace and some nude heels.

You look fantastic, Tania. So simple and pretty. I bet that vest would look fantastic belted over a floral dress. Or as others said above, a maxi skirt.

I feel the same way about magazines too. They inspire me with their photography skills, but more often than not I turn to blogs.

Leah said...

i think it'd look great hanging loose over a printed dress, like your tucker for target one!

Liesl @ FabulousFashions4SensibleStyle said...

Cute! Love the belted sweater vest look on you...I think you styled it quite well!

Liesl :)

You said it perfectly. Thank you. I actually have always disliked clothing magazines because they were so unrealistic and unattainable.

As for the vest, I'd pair it over a short-sleeved dress, with the dress belted but the vest loose. And then knee-high boots.

I love this post :) So with you here, it's all about the real people (is that ironic coming from me?). I love the styling here, I think it's incredibly flattering on you. I think it'll look great open and flowing, too - maybe with your top underneath belted for shape? I don't know i'm winging it here, as style blog fun permits ;)

Jenn Giles said...

I really like the way this vest looks, but what if you paired it with your Tucker for Target dress?!

GoodFrameofMind said...

Wonderfully said Tania! I think that vest is so cute and would even look cute paired with your Tucker dress down there with some boots :)

Loren said...

You look beautiful AND real. Love your shoes.
I would wear it open over some thing kinda skimpy on the bottom (shorts or miniskirt & tights) and a little bit baggy on top. Maybe just a dark blue tank.

Linley said...

love this post, tania! totally with you on the hipless and richless issues! but you always look great - and i love how you have styled this vest! simple chic is always an A+ in my book! i also think you should see how it looks paired with a floral dress - that could be pretty! good luck!

Pineapple said...

The way you are wearing it now is exactly how I would have suggested, so good job with that! I honestly might try it (having seen it on you, thank you for trying out my idea for me! Haha) belted like that, but belted open. Like, just let it hang normally and then belt it however it falls.
Warning: this might look stupid. Sorry if it does!

zoe.k. said...

baggy jeans, rolled up, a pair of oxfords, a gray t-shirt and a long vintage necklace I would say! :)

QueenVII said...

I agree with you... although there are some style blogs out there that make me feel even more jealous because there really are girls that are that thin, rich, glam (the blonde salad, fashion toast)... but its not a negative jealousy... it's a great thing, blogging! Very inspiring!!! I like how zoe.k. said to style it!

Babes in Thriftland said...

I think it would be really cute open over a dress. Maybe a cap or short sleeved number? I think that blue dress that you have would look cute with it. I guess it would depend on how it lays when it's unbelted. I think it looks really cute here though. How would you style a shawl? I just posted it on my blog and I haven't figured out how to wear it yet.

I have a vest I bought at H&M two years ago that I have yet to wear because I have no idea what to pair it with. But maybe it's finally time to take it out for a spin? I love this vest look, and I agree--I get so much more inspiration from real women than magazine spreads.

Think Twice Style said...

Try it over a girly, casual dress to add layers! Be sure to wear it with and without the belt... it makes it just that much more versatile!

La Historiadora de Moda said...

I'll chime in with the chorus here and say I think it would look great with a maxi skirt or over a dress.

The other reason that I enjoy style blogs is the voice of the women and men who write them often comes through. That makes them much more interesting to me than most magazines.

Chelsie said...

I agree with the masses! I'd like to see it open over a floral print dress...

And you're absolutely right about magazines vs. blogs.

kelsey said...

I really do like how you have it here, but you could try it over a dress (keep the belt)?

Now, I'm reading the other comments and realizing this was not an original thought. Ha!

Chloe said...

I think you look absolutely adorable!

But for whatever it's worth, I find that I feel washed out when I wear white or that light brown color next to my face, which translates to a kind of self-conscious, crappy day. I say "feel" because I think it's more psychological than anything (as I said, you look great!), but maybe a brightly colored necklace, scarf,or colored top underneath the vest would put a little spring in your step? Sometimes I'll wear lipstick with those colors, too, which also seems to help. (:

Charmaine said...

I don't read magazines either. I tend to think they lack the character that a blog has. I'd even go as far as saying a blog has soul to it, a magazine seems to be nothing but advertising.

Lexi said...

I'm thinking over a tank with jean shorts (these pesky Illinois winters will be over soon enough!) and maybe boots? Sandals? Chuck Taylors? The shoe options are infinite!

Looks and Books said...

Well put. I feel exactly the same way. I don't buy fashion magazines anymore because the are often contradictory in their message about women's bodies, but also because most of the clothing and products they promote cost a small fortune and will be out of style by the time I would save enough to buy them anyway.

Style blogs offer me TONS more inspiration for my own personal style, and allow me to get to know women on a personal level, which is so much more valuable and interesting than glossy, pretty pictures of impossibly beautiful ladies.

Now, the vest--I'd be interested in seeing it open over a floral sundress, with some boots and maybe a straw fedora. There are tons of ways you can work this though!

Outfits and Stuff said...

I hardly ever read fashion mags since discovering style blogs (and my confidence and style are much improved because of it!). That vest is great but the color is very hard to wear. I think it calls for a bright color on or near your face (either with red lips or some sort of contrasting scarf).

Bekah: Matters of Merrymaking said...

Wow, I agree with all that you said! I love the style blogs do all of those things, and also inspire creativity with the things you already own and that buying the newest most expensive trend is not necessary, when you can remix!

I agree! I've unsubscribed to blogs that got all magaziney as they got more popular. And I'd like to see the vest open, over a long-sleeved T, maybe in cobalt blue.

What Would a Nerd Wear said...

ohh thanks for all the suggestions! i think the winner must be open over a floral dress...so i will definitely be trying that soon.
and i agree about the color, i wish i weren't so pale because it might then be easier to wear!

Izabela said...

Well said lady!

Like others have already said, that vest would look great with your Tucker dress, belted or unbelted!

But I like this look, too!

I completely agree! It's wonderful seeing women of different ages, shapes, sizes, etc. showing off their personal style and dressing to flatter their own bodies.

I think your vest would be cute with your new Target dress!

my exact feelings.

amy said...

I must agree that I love style blogs for that reason as well! Lots of folks have recommended things like flouncy skirts or maxi dresses, but I think because this blouse looks so loosey, that it needs more structure on the bottom. What about a pencil skirt with it belted as you have it here? Love!

Amy said...

i completely agree with you. thats a reason i love style blogs too. I love your boots.

~Chelsea said...

I love style blogs for the same reasons. Real girls, accesssible clothing...I love to see what others are wearing and how they've styled different looks.

I think you did an awesome job incorporating the vest into your outfit! this would work great without the belt too! just let out flow :)

I really love what you said about magazines. After reading them I also experience those same feelings of not being good enough. I think you're brave to put that out there.
I love reading your blog precisely because you are a regular girl with whom I can identify. I'm also a postgrad so seeing what you wear for study/teaching/everyday is fun and inspiring.

The Natty and Jessie Show said...

I've ditched the magazines for the reasons you've described. Blogs are soooo much better?! Us regular girls all need to stick together! We're all fantastic and beautiful in our own ways, plenty to celebrate there!

I love the way you've styled your vest, if I was to do something different I'd go for a cute short floral skirt and leave everything else as it is. Those boots are awesomeness!!!

Kelley said...

I love style blogs for the exact same reason. I think they're one of the best things the internet has invented so far, because you get to see real girls with real bodies being really creative and cute!

I have a lot of trouble pairing vests. I wonder, do you have to wear sleeves since it is already sleeveless.

And yes, I prefer fashion blogs over magazines. I just can't keep up with their perfection. I actually move around and eat throughout the day.

I actually love the way you wore it here! You look gorgeous. But it would also look amazing over a sleeved dress (your Tucker for Target one, maybe?), with pale tights and this belt :)

precisly!! thats also the reason i like fashion blogs..its all about real people wearing clothes in a interesting way....

I couldn't agree more about why I love style blogs! I love yours in particular because I feel as if we have a similar style and I am always adding your outfits to my "inspiration folder." Keep up the good work : )

Kelly said...

I have a similar vest and I style it the exact way you did, except last time I wore a wider belt... I'm sorry I'm not much help!

I agree with loving style blogs for the same reasons. Not everyone is airbrushed, photoshopped and, well, sometimes fake. And its great to give and receive opinions. :)

Amen, sister! That's exactly why I read more style blogs and fewer magazines as well.
And I think that vest can be remixed in a million ways--what a great piece! I do think it would look great with the tucker dress. Maybe belted? With a mustard scarf? Ooh, this is too much fun. :)

myedit said...

I am going to obvious route and suggest you pair it with my leather skirt and merlot tights... yup, I suggest you send the vest to me...
I like this post and couldn't agree more. I do still love my magazines but I hate that they feel like they deserve high praise when they use anyone beyond a size 0. I do find that style sites like Sartorialist or facehunter etc. instantly make my thighs feel fat. It's the street style of the glossy and I can't compare with that. I appreciate the aspirational way that clothing is put together on blogs like that but the uber skinny trend is frightening. There is a lot more to say on this I am sure... but I will spare you the novel and wait until we have a coffee date.

Thank you so much for writing about this! AND I really really love this outfit. I think it is one of my favorite outfits I've seen you wear!

I feel that same way you do. Although I have to say that as more and more of my favourite bloggers hit the big time, their photos are starting to look as contrived and styled as any magazine spread. And then, vice versa, magazines are starting to look more and more like a good fashion blog too!

Louise said...

I like everything about this outfit, I need a vest just like this one!

I agree 100% about enjoying style blogs the most when I feel like I'm looking at a real person. There are a lot of blogs I don't read because I always come away feeling inadequate, like I could never afford those clothes or make my hair look like that or take such artful pictures. I would much rather read about a regular person whose style is inspiring and attainable.

As for your vest, I like this outfit! I think you could also wear it belted or unbelted with wide-leg jeans for a more 70s look. You have those wide-leg jeans from Gap, right? (I remember because I just got some myself and looooove them.)

I bought this EXACT vest specifically to wear with my white and orange polka dot Tucker for Target blouse (from last year). I think this vest would look great with any flowy blouse with a tie neck.

I'm actually wearing it today with a brown shirt and pants (the vest is hanging open) and a lot of necklaces. It's a nice frame for the jewels!

Liz said...

I totally agree with Linley - I think you should try the vest with a floral dress - like your tucker one!

I love this post! I have actually been thinking recently how I like blogs better than magazines. I think its why when I do want to look at magazine - I gravitate towards people style watch or Us or intouch - because it's all candid shots of celebs rather than professional ones!

when I bought this for you I was skeptical, but I really like this pairing actually. I especially like the belt and that you used simple things to pair with it.

Lin said...

I would wear a black and white polka dot blouse under it, belted the same way, and I'd wear my favorite brown jcrew cords... despite what a lot of people say, I think browns and blacks can go really well together when done the right way, and it's a rule I like to break all the time! :-)

I'd also wear the vest with a gray hooded sweater underneath with jeans and boots. Since the whole outfit would more or less be neutrals I'd probably throw on a statement/bold necklace or hat. Which reminds me, I think you'd be adorable in hats!

Becky said...

Right on with your feelings on magazines. I love looking at them like you'd look at art in a museum - pretty but absolutely inaccessible. I've learned more and tried more since I started reading style blogs. You guys are very inspiring. :)

Very well put, i could not agree more; style blogs are the most real and positive form of inspiration!
I love this pairing!

I couldn't agree with you more! I always love looking at your blog and other various blogs for real life examples of what to toss together and how to have fun with it! Thank you!!

P.S. You have me wanting to dig out my low cowgirl booties to rock w/ some skinny jeans! thanks for the inspiration!
