Nerd Manifesto

Works Cited--Outfit 23
skirt: urban outfitters
blouse: h&m
belt: j crew
tights (gray layered over black): both gap
maryjane clogs: dansko

As I get older, I have embraced that I am uncool compared to a lot of people--I have at least 50 times as many books as shoes, I get awkwardly over-excited about literary modernism in front of 19 year-olds every week, I color-code or alphabetize everything, I drop papers and trip over curbs and clumsily slip down stairs in public places, and I'm secretly terrified of big parties where I don't know people. However, I am never more aware of this uncool-ness than on the days I wear danskos and just love them and feel more myself than ever. Danskos are all the things my New Englander mother thinks shoes should be--comfortable and practical and they provide good arch support--and in spite of them being sensible shoes (as sensible as they come), I still love the way they look. I think they look great, genuinely! So instead of worrying that my clogs don't belong on a "style blog," I am just embracing that I can be nerdy both on the inside and on the outside. And while it sometimes feels great to wear sky-high heels and pretend at being cool, in the end, it feels better to embrace and accept the dorky, sensitive, overly-intellectual, sensible-shoe-wearing-side of me. And I'll take feeling like myself over feeling cool, any day.

I think it's great that you embrace your awkward nerdiness (though I don't see it)! It takes a lot of guts especially in the fashion blogosphere!!!

I love my danskos...wearing them right now! They are must in grad school!

Eleanor said...

I love your skirt and tights combo! And sensible shoes are the way to go (speaking as a birkenstock wearer).

Rebecca said...

Style blogging would sure be boring if we all wore the same thing. Embrace the Danskos!

This is such a wonderful outfit Tania! Props for skipping the sky high heels and going with something much more you.

I think you look great! The shoes look so cute with that outfit!

I'm more of a Birkenstock girl, but I know exactly what you mean. I like being able to rock too-high heels one day and Birks the next; that's really who I am.

I love the skirt and the shoes and dont think they are nerdy!

You are so adorable! I love that you are embracing who you are instead of trying to be something you are not. Way to go! :)

This might be my favorite outfit so far! There's just something about gray and maroon. I think those shoes are wonderful, I wish I had a pair!! I just realized what you did with your tights and I can't believe I never thought of it before! I have similar tights from the Gap I think and I never thought to put another pair underneath! I'll try that tomorrow! :-)

Maggy said...

what? not nerdy, listen to your Mother! I have 3 pairs...wearing my brown ones now, all the women in my family love them :)

Justine said...

my mom swears by these shoes! She has 5-6 pairs in different colors at home. Almost all her co-workers wear them too. I have yet to get a pair. Maybe in a few years.

I really like the color combination!

Our feet need a break! Those shoes really aren't bad at all. I think you look cute! What I love about fashion blogging is that it is all about real people living real lives and looking great doing it. Keep it real we love your nerdiness :)

I've never been into danskos probably because I just love loafers way too much (my shoe of choice), but I do admire them as a company. They do a lot of do-goodery community stuff, and have a LEED Gold headquarters.

LOVE LOVE LOVE those shoes !and your polka dots!! you look awesome as always.

I always shake my head when you call yourself nerdy or describe something that you think is nerdy. I always relate to what you are saying, so I think that what you consider "nerdy" is just normal. I grew up in a very academic minded home with a professor father, a very intellectual stay at home mom and a super-nerd for a big sister (who was a Fulbright Scholar and is now a professor herself). Nothing you talk about seems out of the ordinary to me. Maybe that's why I enjoy your take on fashion so much.

When I was a teenager, I would always complain to my mom about how dorky mY (extremely warm) down parka made me look.

My mom's response?

Looking cold is dorky. Now put on your coat.

So, I say being comfy is NOT dorky!

Personally, I think the coolest people are the ones who look good because they look like themselves. So in my book, you're definitely up there with the cool people! Besides, nerds ARE cool. Other people just haven't recognised the awesome yet. ;)

On another note, I really, really love this outfit! The colours look perfect together. I wouldn't have thought to call your shoes nerdy or uncool at all; I think they look fantastic!

Kristin said...

I was just thinking to myself how much I love those shoes - and then I read the rest of the post & there you were defending them! Craziness. I think they're wonderful...!

Aw, you are so cute. And nerdy! I love this--the outfit, your prose, and those fabulous shoes. I need a pair of Danskos ;-) I think they are awesome.

I think as long as you feel good, wear whatever shoes you want. I am to ballet flats as you are to these clogs - I know there are taller, less comfortable, more fashionable shoes out there, but I just can't bring myself to wear them on a regular basis. I've about loved my red flats to death.

i must say i totally agree with you - i always love the look of clogs like danksos' and hasbeens. in high school, i wore the old school birkenstocks uhhhhh EVERY. single. day. and i think i might still have the chocolate corduroy ones sitting in my closet. :)

Isn't it just refreshing to be yourself?!
I don't care for parties or sky high heels...while they both look great; I feel so uncomfortable in them. LOL
Cute outfit. Love the blouse!

great post! it's always better to feel like yourself because that's how it should be! I am a nerd too and damn proud of it!!! :-) rock your danskos!!!

I really love this post. It made my day. I frequently get excited about literature in front of 17 year olds. I fell on my face walking in to school a few weeks ago, and I knock over the trash can by my desk daily. It's good to know there are others out there!

kimbercrafts said...

This outfit is adorable, and you rock the Danskos. Three cheers for being yourself! :)

Married In Chicago said...

you make them look GOOD! Quite honestly, I've always wanted a pair and been too concerned about being "uncool" to buy one. But, you have totally inspired me that they can look cute!

larheel said...

You look great, Danskos included. Granted, I've been a Danskos evangelist ever since I went to London for a semester as an undergrad and had enough room to pack 2 pairs of shoes. Buying a pair of Danskos got me through that semester...and a long time after that. However, I've not yet gotten a pair of Mary Janes. Or, what I want even more is a pair of Dansko boots I saw at REI this winter! They looked amazing.

Sara K.S. Hanks said...

PREACH, sister! Such a good attitude.

And psst, I think your Danskos look cool, too. You are not alone in that.

I think being yourself and having confidence in that is what makes you cool.

Well, it could be because I work in academia and live in a reasonable and well-educated town (Madison, WI) but I see Danskos all the time.

Nurses, waitresses, anyone on their feet wear them everywhere around here. I see doctors in them at the hospital.

Tons of people in academia wear Danskos. I think it's that we walk on campus and need comfortable shoes, but they also last forever, hold up well, and go with everything.

I have worn Dansko clogs (and not even the Sally you are wearing but the horse clog clogs) with everything...including suits and dresses.

I love Danskos. I honestly think they are COOL. :)

Lauren said...

Those are the coolest looking Danskos I've ever seen! I am currently in the market for cute but comfy shoes - though the uncomfortable sky-high heels are always going to have a place in my heart :).

THIS outfit in general is just amazing. I completely and utterly love everything about it!

I can totally relate as I am trying to embrace the nerdiness in myself too! But really, you look great here. I was totally expecting the nerd glasses when I saw the title before the pictures though! :)

You and I sound very much alike :) And I think your clogs are adorable, and that you look adorable in them!!

style (which you have) is about individuality. owning who you are and what you love shows integrity and courage.

Three cheers for Danskos! I wore mine to campus today (I'm also a PhD student) with a very similar outfit, coincidentally: tights, a patterned top, and a high-waisted belted skirt! I wore the Danskos mainly as foot protection for a 90%-chance-of-rain day, and when I realized it was actually going to be sunny all day, I felt a twinge of regret that I didn't pick more "fashionable" shoes to go with my outfit. Ultimately, though, I feel the same way you do: those Danskos are awesome, totally me, and so damn comfortable!

I rock "Birkenclogs" (aka, Boston-style Birkenstocks) from the time it gets too chilly on the toes for my Arizonas, to the time I just can't bear to wear socks anymore! In love with them.

If my mom were to read fashion blogs, I am sure she would say 'why can't you be sensible like Tania?'. Ma... leave me alone!!!
You rock the Danskos and the paperbag waste dress....

Hi! I just found your blog about a week ago and I am SO inspired by you! I love this outfit and the fact that you love danskos :-) In fact, you (and Kendi) have inspired me so much that I just started my own personal 30 for 30; I currently on day five and things are going well. I just wanted to say thank you and kudos to from a fellow nerd.

New reader, here! I was *this* close to going (well, applying!) grad school for English and even on my most stylish days as an undergrad I don't think I was nearly this chic. Loving your looks, can't wait to see more!! :)

Erica said...

Amen! I couldn't be cool if I tried. Thanks for being so honest, and i'm gonna be honest, you look fantastic in those clogs.

You don't look nerdy at all! You look gorgeous... and may be turning me into a Dansko believer.... I am still in the ridiculously uncomfortable, high heels - makes no sense really. Love the grey and maroon - one of my fav combos.

What a great post! Let's hear it for sensible shoes!!

Emily said...

With a good hair day like this and that polka dot top you're pretty far off from Revenge of the Nerds status.

I love the polka dots! and, as usual, you've styled them perfectly. You have an amazing unique style!

I first started wearing Dansko clogs for work (nurse, 12 hours on my feet) and I bought a pair of clogs in patent black. At first (mind you this was just over a year ago!) everyone snarked at them and turned their noses up, even though they looked perfectly fab with my scrub pants. Now I think I've started a trend at my hospital as everyone has the same pair. I went and bought the mary janes in an amazing honey-camel color (http://www.amazon.com/Dansko-Marah-Womens-Clog/dp/B002PEWOGW/ref=pd_sbs_shoe_1) and they look darn tootin' cute with a pair of straight leg dark wash jeans ... and I'm about the furthest thing from a nerd ...

Genevieve said...

Getting over-excited about literary modernism--completely NOT dorky. Stein and Woolf totally deserve that adulation. I also really love your clogs. I think they go perfectly with your outfit (which is adorable!). Plus, being comfortable IS cool!

I love this post! It's such a great thing to celebrate who we really are. I haven't found my style-equivalent to Danskos, but I'm sure they're out there!

In LOVE with this outfit. I was trying to figure out what color those tights were and then I read that they are two colors layered togeter. nice. Great job!

Nicole said...

I usually stay as far away as possible from polka dots, but lately I have been wavering on that stance. Your post officially converted me to the opposite side. Polka dots CAN look chic! I love the blog, I will definetly become a follower.

I adore Danskos. That style in particular? Um, I may or may not own in three colors. (Hint: I totally do.) Including the cordovan you sport so beautifully. I really must remember to wear that color more often. (Tan are the ones that get a big workout in my wardrobe.)

I am ALWAYS terrified at large parties where I don't know anyone. Or at least, parties where I know but don't know anyone well enough to talk to them. I'm more comfortable around strangers than groups of people that know who I am but don't really like me.

That said, embrace the nerd! I think this looks super cute.

I both adore and covet your entire outfit. I think one of my faves!

I think the point of a personal style blog is to show your personal style! If all bloggers wore the same things as other bloggers ... where's the fun in that? And Danskos are super comfy.

ellie said...

Sometimes I think the outfits that really make me stop and say wow, are the ones that take items that are "uncool" and make you forget about that cause it's all just so awesome.

As someone who wears high heels all day at work, i think the best outfits are when I'm wearing my Birkenstocks, or Teva's, or Keen's, or my Bean Boots. They all have a purpose, and my best memories are made wearing the "ugliest" shoes.

Ashley said...

This is one of my favorite outfits - I love the Danskos. Cheers to embracing YOU!

Your statement describes me to a "T". I can relate in so many ways.....including the klutz tendencies. I have been wearing Danskos since highschool and still love to wear my black Dansko mary jane clogs every now and then on casual Fridays at my corporate job. I feel myself when my old casual, college hippie nature starts to poke through. They are the best.

AW said...

I heart Danskos, too, and I love the way you've made them look a little "dressier" here.

People who embrace who they are ARE cool. (Though it doesn't hurt that you've got killer style - even in Danskos!) Also, loving the layered tights.

I love this outfit on you! Polka dots and colors are such a gorgeous combination.

And I hear you on the uncool-ness -- I have doubled up each of the shelves on my two bookshelves because I don't have enough room for all the books I own, I wrote an undergraduate senior thesis on British anti-French political cartoons from 1793-1810, and I get absurdly excited about anything to do with British history or literature in general.

Lori said...

I LOVE Dankos. I own a pair very similar to yours but in black. I've had them for almost 6 years and they just keep getting more comfortable. We should join forces and make them cool :)

Hi there! I have to mention that I've been following your blog for months and adore your eccentrically vanilla style! I recently purchased the exact Dansko mary janes that you seem to wear so well - you would make a New York gal very happy if you posted some tips on styling them! I also own a pair of the original Dansko professional clogs, and I am completely lost in terms of wearing them with anything other than jeans.

Fortunately, nerds like us can hide in the fold of the current Dansko trend - who knew comfy and trendy could coexist happily?

Thanks for the continuing inspiration,
~Alex.
