Lately, I feel like outfits have been on a far, far back burner of my mind as I study for my exams. Consequently, I am drawn toward really simple colors and combinations, not too many adornment or accessories and no-fuss hair. In some ways, my return to vanilla may be a little boring to read (sorry!!) but it's also indicative of the ups and downs that anyone's wardrobe goes through as life happens--when other things demand my interest, clothes tend to gravitate toward the back of my brain and I find myself dressing for simplicity so I can put my focus elsewhere: new classes to teach, lots of books to read before March (acks!) and a dissertation project to plan. My outfits disguise me as a duck--calm on the outside, and paddling like crazy underneath :)

I'm a bike-riding bookworm in DC trying to make better use of a sometimes-vanilla closet. You can read a little more about this blog

I've been having a similar trend toward the comfortable and vanilla lately, and things have been nothing short of break-neck busy here, too. I think it's partly a comfort thing, but also a bit of a honing of my style. There are cycles of experimentation, and then cycles of returning to the comfortable, that slowly whittle down my sense of personal style.
Anyway, I really love this outfit. Perfect for a cold winter day.
I actually really really love this outfit...particularly the blue shoes with the grey tights. My "vanilla" days are much more boring.
You call this vanilla, I call it perfection. Very classic and nearly nautical. :)
My mom used to tell me to "be a duck" all the time!
If this is you being vanilla, then I'm jealous. Right now, my vanilla consists of lounge pants.
I also like your grey tights.Sometimes real world calls and i juggle like crazy.real life always wins!!!
Oh but I adore this outfit! I wish I could capture your vanilla everyday :)
There's nothing wrong with vanilla. We can't be chocolate java chip everyday.
You look fabulous. I love the color palette. Are you doing the 30 for 30 this time??
I think this mix of neutrals looks very classic and sophisticated! Not vanilla at all!
Haha, love the simile. I find myself really trying to define my style lately - it's a pretty interesting process. I'm starting to realize that just because I love the way an outfit looks on someone else, it doesn't mean it suits me or is something I feel like "myself" in when wearing.
I don't think simple outfits are vanilla at all! They are some of my favorites, and this outfit is beautiful.
I don't think this outfit is vanilla or boring at all! The way that your skirt and shirt and shoes coordinate across those neutrals sort of gets me all fluttery. I love it :)
I think you look very put together and pretty. I think I would have paired it with cream tights instead of grey but that's just me :)
Is this your last year of school? I remember mine being very stressful, right down to then end when i had to re-format my thesis.
Good luck!!!
I think your vanilla is adorable. Sometimes simple can be so refreshing.
Girl I think you've been on fire with your outfits! Love this soft color palette.
You still look so pretty! Although, I think it would be even better if you added that amazing Sephora lipstick. It's such a fun color and looks amazing on you. Plus it's anything BUT vanilla!
I loove your simple dressing because it is done with such elegance and amazing color combinations, like the examples above!! Soooo gorgeous!
I like it!! It's simple but classy and sophisticated. Hope exams are going well!
The simple grays and blues are ultimately really chic. Keep it up!

i've enjoyed all the navy/blues/neutrals lately. and you're right, everyone goes through a simplicity stage...i like it. you should be concentrating on your exams anyway! ;) good luck.
I think for a boring outfit, this is awfully lovely! Your boring is my inspired. ;)
I felt much the same way as my exams were approaching! Doing the 30 for 30 helped me have be more creative and "be a duck" whilst in the midst of exam-taking. I'm sure this next round will do the same for you and be full of winning style combinations!
You look lovely. I am not usually a big accessorizer either but this cute little outfit doesn't need any additions! :)
I love the simplicity of this outfit. You look gorgeous! :)
Aw, I love your duck analogy. The next few months may look daunting, but I bet you will rock them.
And I really like this outfit too! I've been wondering what a navy skirt would look like with a light blue button-down, and voila! Here it is. See how helpful you are? :-)
Neutrals always look great & classic. Your sweater is beautiful!

the grey tights really make this look interesting. your fashion sense is clearly innate -- you don't have to even think about it to look good! :)
I think you're hardly giving yourself enough credit here - I really like this mix of blues and light neutrals, and you've got enough details going on (the belt, the ruffles, the layered cuffs) to keep things interesting without going over the top.
(On a side note, thanks again for the book recommendations - I've got an eight hour train ride tomorrow, and have got White Teeth and Atonement all loaded up on the Kindle to keep me occupied!)

I really like blue because like you said it's calming. Sometimes wearing purple and yellow gives even me a headache.

The colors in these photos are so streamlined! The color of your skin, the cardigan, and the belt. The color of the sky, the houses in the background and your shirt. The color of the trees, the salty asphalt and your tights. Lovely.
You may call it simple, but I call it classic.

I actually love this outfit. The color palette is muted but I do not think it is boring! In fact I am tagging this for future inspiration :)
You look fab, as always. I really love the colors in this outfit.

I love this outfit. It's simple, but it's classy and timeless. Perfekt :)
Love the look...especially the grey tights!
Oh wow, are you getting ready for your comps?? GOODLUCK! Seriously you do not give yourself enough style credit. I don't think you could have boring outfits if you tried, your taste is just too good! :)
I really love it. The colours are kind of calming. There was a cardigan like that on sale in H&M and I didn't buy it, I wish I had now. I think I'll go back!
The module convener on a module I was teaching on once told me that young academics are like swans: serene on the surface, but flapping around frantically underneath. I liked it.
I love this outfit - it's simple and flattering and lets you shine through - remember, vanilla is one of the most complex flavors there is!

You look great in cool, silvery colors! Love your street photos.

as someone who just finished my major comps i can unreservedly say that your version of "distracted" fashion is way, way better than mine! 9 out of 10 days i resort to jeans and a sweater! :) but, you have inspired me to be more adventurous regarding skirts and dresses. best of luck studying!
Love the silvery tones of this! I am studying for exams too--the snow definitely helps! Good luck,
Violet

I love the mutedness of this! The steely blues and grays. This looks wonderful
