I'm running one day behind on posting, so this was what I wore yesterday when I headed back to the classroom for the first day of this semester's teaching. I'm excited about my class this term and wanted something easy, no-fuss, and a little bit bright to wear for the first day. Because I'm hoping to decenter my classroom authority along with the ways modernist texts decenter narrative authority, I wanted to seem particularly approachable and as little like a stiff vaunt-of-all-knowledge lecturer as I could. I won't wax poetic about my ideas for how to teach this semester, suffice it to say my goal is to my students work with each other to solve the problems that difficult texts pose, rather than push my own readings on them. And of course, I think Paulo Freire would like orange.

Wow, I love this! I thought this dress was red when you first introduced it to us, but now that I can see it's orange, I like it even more :-)
I'm not sure I understand a thing you said but you look fabulous for your first day of teaching.

I'm also a grad student and have the exact opposite views on the subject of what to wear! I like to wear high-authority clothing for the first day of teaching, because I want them to know I'm in charge! (Just kidding. But not really... I do like to wear tongue-in-cheek teacher clothes like 70's tie neck blouses and tweed blazers.)
You always look so lovely in earth tones.
I agree a bit with anon @8:25... you look great, but my vision of authority differs. My tweaks to this outfit would be perhaps a button down under the sweater dress, or a blazer on top. Or, maybe just a nice silk scarf around the neck. Something that takes it beyond the realm of student.

Have you read 'What the Best College Teacher's Do?' It's not exactly a pedagogy book, but I find it really inspiring for thinking about learner-driven pedagogies.

I love this outfit - I wish my lit TAs had worn outfits like this...I think most of my TAs wore jeans three sizes to big, birkenstocks, and flannels. ick.

I'm curious about how many students you have. I would LOVE to be less authoritative (I'm a sociology grad student who studies power and change from the ground up!), but in a class of 80 I need all the authority I can get to keep everyone on task.

I adore this look, and it's absolutely the same kind of thing I love to wear while teaching. Like you, I find that typical "authoritative" clothing doesn't work with my personal teaching ethos--the more approachable my students find me, the more they trust me, the more respect I get. I find suits and buttondowns make me feel false. I bet they're going to love you.
And you had to have felt pretty special wearing the Christopher dress on your first day! Such a lovely color. I might have worn heels instead of boots--but then again, it's WAY warmer here in DC!

Yay for Paulo Freire!! I'm doing a Masters in Education and that man is changing the way I think about education! I would love to hear about if your classroom discussions unfold in a Freirian way this semester!

funny story... last year, paulo freire friended me on facebook. my first reaction was, "wow, it's really paulo freire!" my second reaction, "but i thought he was dead."

What a lovely, warm, and vibrant outfit for the first day! I understand if you prefer to keep it private, but I'm also curious how many students you have. Class size (and number) plays a large role in both my pedagogical and professartorial challenges.
I know at least one other commenter mentioned it here, but I'll say it again just because - I'd LOVE to see your ideas and plans for teaching! I'm going to be a grad student next fall so I'd really love to hear your take on the experience.
Great outfit (love the color combos!) and great teaching philosophy. I teach a much younger class, but I have the same views... I love when they can work together to figure things out.

I love the colours! I hope class went well - pity me for I have to teach The Culture Industry to a bunch of clueless first year literature undergrads on Monday. Who have never read critical theory. Usually I go for an encouraging, question-led approach but next week I think they're going to need some handholding! x

I wore the same orange dress for my first day of real-person teaching! I paired it with a wide brown belt and a yellow-orange tweed blazer. Feeling good on the authority front, and I hope your first day went well also!

I teach university classes too, and I have the same struggle on the first day - how do I look like I really am supposed to be teaching this class without looking completely unapproachable? I think you've struck a good balance here - dressy enough to be professional, cute enough to be approachable.
