A Perfect Cube

skirt: target
belt: uo
tee, boots: j crew
tights: gap
glasses: local vintage store (thank you, sarah!)

I'm really excited about these dorky glasses that I got at a local vintage place, thanks to a birthday gift certificate I've been hoarding for approximately 6 weeks. But it turns out my family members aren't so excited. When I sent them pictures of the glasses, my mom replied, "Oh, those are nice. But you aren't actually going to wear them in public, are you?" And my sister, paragon of wisdom, told me, "I think you are too conventional for nerd glasses. Which is to say, you are too much of a nerd to wear nerd glasses." So family members, I am going to wear these glasses, as part of my mission to reclaim nerdiness from the realm of hipsters who do not deserve it as much as nerds do.

HA! I love it. As soon as I saw the picture, the first thought that flashed through my head was: Wow, this is the best nerdy chic look I've seen in a long long time.

Well done!

Rad_in_Broolyn said...

I think that you're perfectly nerdy for nerd glasses. Plus, your nerdiness isn't evident through physical awkwardness, just brilliance, so it's definitely not nerd-overkill.
Cute tights.

I think you look AMAZING! I love the glasses on you!!!!! Don't listen to your family... listen to us ;)

Wait, do you really NEED glasses, or are you just wearing them for fun?

They are super cute though, I tried to go nerdy with my last frames purchase (I am blind as a bat & wearing glasses since 7).

Sidewalk Chic said...

We must be brain twins or something, because I'm wearing nerd glasses in my outfit post today too. Except mine are 3d ones with the lenses punched out, and yours are real and awesome.

I really like this outfit. The green tights are really fantastic against the lace and the neutral tones.

I really love the green tights and lace skirt. texture and color AND nerdy glasses... beautiful!

i've been looking for green tights! and i love tights from the Gap. did you get them recently??

Heather said...

Ahaha. Thanks for reclaiming nerdy glasses for us nerds. I may have picked my last frames in part because I thought they looked a bit like a librarian would wear them, but I wouldn't be able to wear glasses like yours, since I've got terrible vision and smaller frames help make the glasses less coke-bottley. I think they look adorable on you, but I feel like (in general) wearing glasses for fun instead of need opens up an area of discussion.

chelsea said...

It's like the straight hair/curly hair divide: I've spent my life (since 2nd grade, anyway) trying to get *rid* of glasses, so I'm always a little perplexed when people use them as fashion. Those certainly make a statement, and you look utterly delighted - kudos to you!

What Would a Nerd Wear said...

@liz--no, i am a total faker and these glasses have no prescription. i have been cursed with perfect vision when all i want is a pair of cute glasses! so finally i bought a fake pair. don't judge.
@lynn--i WAS freezing but christopher says "imagine you're on a beach. the sun is on your face. you hear the waves on the sand." and it cracks me up and kinda makes me feel warm too :)

Rochelle said...

I think you look lovely! And nerd glasses are a great way to bring attention to your eyes! Way to reclaim them for nerds again too :-)

ha ha my mom said the same thing to me when i got a similar prescription pair. she stated i would look like a grandmother if i do remember correctly.

grace said...

they look great! I'm totally a fake glasses girl too- why not mix it up? Love all the neutral tones from your outfit today... and that you dug out a little hole in the snow to stand in.

S. said...

Tania, this is totally precious! I love the glasses, and the way you've combined these light neutrals for a really sophisticated look, with the unexpected green tights.

What Would a Nerd Wear said...

hi erin! the tights are from last year at the gap, but i think they have some good sweater tights this year, too...

My newest pair of glasses are nerd glasses, too but I am one so. . .and I'm too old for the hipster part of it. I just want more of my field of vision back. Those tiny glasses that were in style for so long drive me crazy!

Bridget said...

Cheers to that! :)

Emily Kennedy said...

I love this look! You look uber-fab hipster-ish. Family members probably can't quite reconcile that with your adorably sweet personality. But hey let the uber-fab hipster in you live a little, right?

Jessica said...

Nice! I ordered a similar prescription pair a couple weeks ago and finally worked up the courage to wear them out in public a few days ago!

Good for you! My family reacted the same way, but it's fun to push the boundaries!

i love, love, love these glasses and i think they look fantastic on you!

I love your glasses! I love the idea of keeping the nerdiness in the nerd group. Those green tights are beautiful! Are they ribbed or solid?

Lauren said...

lololol, I love that last sentence :) "Reclaim nerdiness from the hipsters" Ha!

And I die for this outfit - you are blowing this remix out of the water - Amazing use of neutral colors and styling!!

You just reminded me I need to wear that skirt again. I've only mixed it once. Thank you for the darling reminder, deary.

Don't people who wear these "nerdy" glasses most times not nerds? =]

haha! OH I love it!! And am SO incredibly jealous! After this 30 for 30 I'm on a mission to enhance my accessories. THESE are at the top of my list. Gosh, I just adore you in them!

monster cakes said...

Do NOT listen to them! Before reading your post, my first thought was "She looks amazing in those glasses!" I wear a smaller version, but equally as nerdy, pair and I'm not even a nerd really. I think it's fun to mix nerdy glasses with different styles. You nailed it girl!

Looks and Books said...

I love the glasses! Although I do have to agree with some of the other commenters that as someone who absolutely NEEDS glasses in order to see, it's strange to hear someone complaining of perfect vision just so they can wear glasses. :) But you rock them, so I say embrace them...keep the "nerds" looking good!

What Would a Nerd Wear said...

i think chelsea was right when she said it's a straight/curly hair issue. people with glasses get contacts so they can look like people without glasses. so why can't a longsuffering nerd who sees just fine get glasses to look like she is a person with glasses?
yes, it's a little silly, but i lurve them anyway.

I was actually just thinking about buying a pair of glasses like that today! I definitely will consider them now-they look so great on you!

Oh, I love your glasses on! They really look adorable, and perfectly nerdy. I really need to pick mine up from the doctor's office. I might even post pictures of me looking super nerdy and super pregnant... we'll see.

These are cool :)Love them on you!

My parents surprised me by actually liking my nerdy glasses. I really thought they'd be upset but no, it 's my choice in hats that "makes me look old".

That is too funny. I think the glasses are pretty awesome. As is the rest of your outfit. I actually really really like your ensemble today. I want those tights!

Is it overly nerdy that I instantly understood the post title. I love the glasses and was considering going in a similar direction with my next pair in terms of shape but not in color. I can't get away from maroon browns.

Nice outfit! And those hipsters should leave the nerd glasses alone. They probably never got the grades.

haha, you are totally cute! hooray for reclaiming nerdyness.

love the outfit! and the glasses!
I, too, was cursed with perfect vision, haha. I've been wanting some glasses for a while now, but haven't found any that looked good on me...maybe that's why I was given 20/20.

Go you!, for stepping out and rocking those fake glasses. :)

You look HOT in those glasses. This outfit may be one of my favorites. I wear uber high prescription glasses and try my darndest to pull them off stylishly. My two cents: I kinda like when people wear glasses for fashion, as it blurs the line between those who need them vs. those who don't and makes life easier for me. :)

I would just like to say, that as a physics graduate student (read: nerd nerd nerd), I think that nerds wearing nerd glasses are excellent! I fully support all wearing of all nerd glasses.

ps. your outfits are always amazing.

Paige (Final Clothes-Out) said...

Wear the glasses! We should ALL start wearing nerd glasses, and then the hipsters will decide they're not cool anymore.

I personally feel that you should embrace your nerd qualities...and even exacerbate them by purposefully wearing recognizably nerdy items. But that's just me, and I just think being a nerd is awesome :D

Love the glasses - totally fun!

I have the rust orange version of those tights from last year, and they're basically falling apart because I've worn them so much. I'm disappointed that this year's batch isn't quite the same. If they bring these back, I'll buy two in every color!!

Lovin' the glasses! I wholeheartedly support your efforts to return nerd glasses back to their proper owners (beware, hipsters :) )!

ahh, love the glasses! You should definitely wear them, you look great!

Beth Ellen said...

I love the green tights today, it's what I'm wearing too! Although my palette is not nearly as sophisticated with your grey. (I went for a tis the season outfit).

And as someone (and a serious nerd at that) who has worn glasses/contacts since I was 6) it drives me crazy when people wear fake glasses. You should appreciate your awesome eyes and the fact that you didn't have a 10 year long awkward phase because your mother put you in the worst glasses EVER. They make these look cool seriously.

La Historiadora de Moda said...

Another seal of approval here, too. Although the line between hipster and nerd can occasionally be fine...

christa @ enSTYLEpedia said...

the glasses are totally geeky in the best way possible, love them.
i'm in love with these tights, they look cozy warm and the best shade of evergreen for winter and Christmas festivities.
great outfit.

Well, I love the outfit... but the glasses are fab! My fiance has some awesome nerd glasses like those and my family has made comments about them being the same ones my grandpa had 50 years ago. And not in a positive way. I think you both rock them! Maybe it's just a "younger" trend... like parents and older just don't get it! :)

I love green with grey! It's kind of an unexpected color combination, but green can be so vibrant that grey becomes this wonderful backdrop color.

Also, hipsters are annoying, so I approve of anything that pokes some fun at them or steals their turf :-)

This is a great outfit! The main pieces are so lovely, but the glasses and green tights totally kick it up to the next level!

Love your blog.

I have to wear glasses all the time, contacts make me want to rip my eyeballs out, so I've never understood the sudden desire to wear glasses as an accessory. They look cute though...in a nerdy kind of way.

trust yourself. you look amazing.

you are so damn cute it hurts. Like in an accessible but effortless way. Which makes the green monster chilling on my shoulders try to coerce me into hating you, but quickly runs out of steam as it also agrees with the first line. Sometimes I think my style might be taking a turn for the boring.. but then I see a chic lil mama like you rocking the crap out of some simple but styling duds and my confidences eeks back up.

I've been following your blog for a while, and I just wanted to mimic everyone's sentiments that the glasses look great on you! They look so natural, and not at all try hard or hipster or nerd-wannabe. It just looks like these are your everyday glasses and oh hey they happen to be particularly trendy and look AWESOME on you. Great outfit, as well!
