Okay, friends, I need your help. This is literally the first time in my 25 years that I've worn lipstick, so I have absolutely no idea how to do it. Is this color too pink? (I wanted a very RED red but I was totally helpless in the face of the very confident Sephora salesgirl who shoved this lipstick into my hands). Also--do I need lipliner? It's embarrassing, how little I know about this whole lipstick-application business. I was extremely confused in front of the mirror this morning (let's not even talk about the scene at the Sephora counter). In other news, the lip color is so bright that I let it be my only accessory this morning, which I kind of dig as an accessory-strategy. So: is this the wrong color for me? Do I need something darker, something more orange, something more I-haven't-even-thought-of-it-yet?

I think it is a great color for you! With your hair up, my eyes are really drawn to your lips, which is the point of red lipstick in my opinion!

I saw lip liner is a no! But some make up artists like it. But if the color is good enough--as is yours-- I don't think liner is necessary.

oh... forgot about the lip liner question
don't remember where i read about it
but i do have this idea stuck in my mind that lip liner actually adds at least 10 more year to your face. :)

Just had to say that a) I love this lipstick on you and b) I am right there with you except worse because I don't own a nice lipstick yet. I think I have like 2 free Clinique ones lurking around, but they are by no means flattering shades on me.

It makes a great accessory! And you look tres chic.

I am also lost when it comes to lipstick; all I know is that that colour looks great on you and paired with that mustard sweater :)

I think that color is SPOT ON! You don't really need liner unless you get bleeding, which is I think more of a problem when women are older and have lip wrinkles.

You totally just inspired me for tomorrow, too, yippee!

Love the lip color! It's the perfect shade for you. And so funny that you are trying out lipstick for the first time as I just bought my first red-bright pink lipstick this past weekend! I haven't tried mine out in public yet though, but I have to say you have definitely motivated me to do so :)

Wow! I love love love the lipstick. I am also no expert (I am probably always wearing the wrong shade), but if it looks good, does it matter? And yes, it looks good. :)

That lip color is pretty magical on you. I would pick up a liner, because even though it may seem pink, it comes off like it has a good amount of red in it, and liners always help when wearing reds. You look like snow white! I love how a good red-ish will make skin look so pretty!

I think this lipcolor is practically perfect in every way! You look so lovely in the red lipstick...you should wear it more & more!!

AND it perfectly compliments this fabulous outfit...especially the amazing color of your cardi!

As far as I know, lip liner is old-fashioned (think '95 Jennifer Aniston) and lipstick with orange undertones will make one's teeth appear yellower. But you have beautiful teeth, so you could probably pull it off! When in doubt, go with something that has blue undertones (more fuchsia than peach) so your choppers will glisten! And for precise application, invest a natural hair lip brush.
P.S.: Sorry if that sounded pedantic! I love your blog.

your lipstick is SO perfectly applied! how did you do this?!

i am new to the lipstick world myself .. so far i have revlon color burst in coral (love the color, but it feathers unless you have a primer or heavily chapstick-ed lips). i also have a preeeetty pink nars shade ... it looks super bright but goes on sheer and pretty.

i have to say ... i am so impressed with your 30 for 30 challenge. i have had limited internet access, so i havent been able to comment on all your outfits, but i just browsed through them and your layering is SO inspirational!

and snow!!!!!!! AHHHH! i cant wait to get back to school and play in it. :)

As far as my experience with red lipstick goes, I have two shades I like to wear: a red similar to the one you're wearing in the picture and a darker red for when I feel fancy, so don't feel boxed into one color. :)

Oh, and Sephora girl was right. Lip liner definitely helps keep the lipstick in place. I think it only makes you look older when it's a darker color and just worn as an outline. Do fill in the lips with the liner. I don't wear liner all the time, just when I know I won't be able to reapply for a while.

Also, I like to experiment with the different effects applying then blotting with a tissue makes. It makes deep reds much more wearable for daytime.

I love it!!! I think you look absolutely gorgeous!! I think you could go brighter for sure.

I love the this lipstick on you! It's so bold and a great accessory. I have one really dark red lipstick that I love, but I have to wear it with a lipliner; if I don't it looks really weird, but I think that it's mostly each persons lips are different.

Ms_SyllyBee said...

love the red lips and this hairdo on you! so cute! day glam. :)

I DO think lipliner is a good idea. The salesgirl is right, it does keep it on a lot better, and what you want to do is line the lips and then fill them in a little with the liner before you put on the lipstick. it will definitely help make it last! sometimes you can even put lipgloss on top but i wouldn't suggest that for day..

I agree with Brittany, it will only age you if you're going too dark. it's usually good to get a lipliner in a color close to that of your lips so you can wear it with different lipsticks.... i do have an extra red one though too.

i wander, i wonder

becky said...

the colour is so great! red lipstick tends to bleed, so a red or nude lipliner all over your lips will help the lipstick not bleed. thats what i hear anyways.

That color is great and it looks wonderful with your mustard yellow cardigan. I'm echoing everyone here by saying lip liner isn't necessary but it does make lipstick stay on longer. If you do use it, pick a shade similar to your lipstick color so it doesn't alter it. If you want to tone down a bright lipstick, however, wear a lipliner close to the natural color of your lips. My trick is to blot with a tissue, reapply and then stick my finger in my mouth like a popsicle and pull it out -- that keeps lipstick from getting on your teeth. Hope this helps!

The thing with lip liner is that when you're young and your skin is supple it isn't needed that much, it's only when you're older and your skin starts to wrinkle that the lipstick will start to bleed. I don't wear lipstick very often but when I do I don't wear liner and I've not had a problem (I'm 25 by the way) but maybe in a few years I'll have to start using liner.

It is a lovely colour on you, not many people brave such a bold colour as their first lipstick colour, so bravo to you for diving straight in.

Aesthetic Alterations said...

The Sephora SA advised you well--the red is fantastic. It's not too bright at all, just enough to give an exquisite polish to the whole look. If you're ever looking for another red, Chanel Rouge Coco in Vendôme is a perfect one with a touch of coral. I find it has the perfect level of brightness to go from day to night.

I'm a fan of red lips--I have perhaps a couple dozen red lipsticks and liners in my makeup bag. Once you get used to it, you might not want to go back to the safe colors again. I LOVE liners under lipstick, red or otherwise, but that's because I hate to reapply. A lip liner helps the lipstick stay through tea, lunch, dinner, drinks, whatever. They can be drying, however, so I use Chanel lip pencils--they're pricey, but they actually make my lips feel good, even better than when wearing balm.

Louise said...

Looks like the SA did her job really well, that colour looks fantastic on you. I noticed it when I saw the pictures but it didn't strike me as anything out of the ordinary until I got to the words - I think that means it works brilliantly :)

The Rambler said...

I'm really lazy with my lipstick so I don't wear liner, because I have found that liner often outlasts the lipstick, and in my opinion there is nothing worse than faded lips with a colorful lip line! Also, I just have really unsteady hands, so that makes applying liner scary! If you are good at reapplying lipstick throughout the day, I'd say - your choice! Love the color on you!

Anne said...

I think your lip color is the perfect accessory for the outfit! And good for you for trying it out - I'm completely makeup-stupid and don't even dare to buy something to try out because I have no idea what color to even start with...

I always wear liner with red lipstick, I have one that's close to my natural lip color (I think it's actually called "natural") and I find it helps to keep that bright red where it's supposed to be and last longer.

Also, I totally just bought that cardigan after seeing it on you so many times and loving how much it went with. JCrew thanks you. :)

Wow, I think everyone already said everything, but you look gorgeous! I saw your tweet the other day and thought, "yes, yes, I like where this is going...." and today your post popped up in my Google Reader and it was just perfection. I love the color!!

Also, I wear red lipstick often {and not even the nice stuff, because I'm cheap like that}, and I've never had a problem with bleeding/feathering, so I don't worry about lipliner. I did read in People the other day {please don't judge... it wasn't mine} that you should use a lipliner that's the same color as your natural lip. I'm interested that Aesthetic Alterations said it would help your color stay in place, because mine never does for very long -- I might have to try that out.

Overall {this is in the understandable case you decided to skim this comment, rather than read all of it}, I'd say this venture into red-lip territory is a definite success. Hurray!!

I like it! I think it looks good :) I'm not brave enough to wear red yet, but I do wear nude or pink-ish shades quite often. I wear lip liner all the time but I bought a lip liner that is almost (as close as possible) the same color as my LIPS.. because it helps keep my lipstick in place. I'm only 23 and my lipstick seems to bleed if I don't wear it.. but some people have that problem and others don't. Also once Hillary Duff talked about this lip liner she wears that is clear? (I think) and keeps the lipstick exactly where you put it all day long. You could maybe google it.. or not. Who knows.

You look fab. as always :)

Adooore the lipstick. Spot on your color. I think it's more orangeish though then pink? But I'm on my phone so who knows.
The liner Does make the lipstick stay on better and it only adds years if you actually use it to line. I feel like using it underneath is a dread though. Makes lips so dry

So it seems that salesgirl was right because the lipstick was the first thing I noticed... and that's good because my initial thought was "WOW, nice lipstick!" It really suits you. I wish we had a Sephora in Australia because I would LOVE to get that colour (they don't ship overseas either).

modest typewriter vintage said...

Before I read what you wrote, I actually thought "She looks so classy in that lip color and that outfit", so it must be the right shade! You can't really tell it's a bright pink rather than a red, but from your skin tone, I would think something with blue undertones would go well with your complexion.

Also, I don't wear lipstick, because I don't really like the weight, but you should try a lip stain if you're wanting to experiment. I use CoverGirl Outlast Lipstain and I love it... I've also been really wanting to try Sonia Kashuk's Lip Crayon. Anyways, you look great! Keep rockin' that bold lip!

You are just killing it on all levels with this outfit! I love every single piece of it separately and together! I think the lipstick looks lovely on you! I just wore lipstick for the first time ever last winter and I was spazzing out! Just experiment (I found a drug store that was going out of business and bought a lot of different shades to try. Ones I don't like on their own can often be mixed with another color to make one I like, so it's not a total waste if I buy one I'm not in love with once I put it on.) It still kinda makes me nervous when I wear it though!

ClosetConfections said...

i think the color looks lovely. i also have never worn lipstick until about a month or two ago. i felt weird at first, but i find that it photographs really well. i was also pretty clueless about application, but i found that a red lip liner is a must (for me at least) with red lipstick. also, a nude lipliner might help as well to prevent bleeding with other colors.

Since I thought, "Oh, I like the lipstick!" before I even read your post, I would say it's a good color on you. As for lipliner, I try to wear it when I wear red/ brighter-colored lipstick just because I feel like it wears more evenly and smudges less. I am constantly licking or biting my lips though, so it could just be me.

Lisa D. said...

I love the lipstick! It was the first thing I noticed about you as soon as I checked your blog this morning. And I thought to myself, "Red lipstick!" So don't worry that it looks pink - it totally looks red. :) I think it's a great color on you! I do occasionally use a lipliner when I wear lipstick, but usuallly I don't. Actually, I usually don't wear lipstick either, and when I do, it's a very muted shade of pink...very close to my natural lip color. But you're making me want to try something more colorful for the holidays!!

I like the lipstick color and I think it really goes with the yellow color of the cardigan! For me, I'm not a fan of the lipliner look as I just think it doesn't do anything but leave a weird ring around your lips when the lipstick starts to wear off. I say if you want to do anything to the lips, maybe add a little gloss on top so it doesn't look so matte. A little shine and sparkle goes a long way! :)

I love the simple sophistication of this outfit. I think the lipstick looks great on you! I recently tried out LipStain and really liked it! Otherwise I've always been a lipgloss or chapstick gal... it's fun to try something new, huh?

Paige (Final Clothes-Out) said...

The red is great! You don't need lip liner if your lips are properly moisturized. Basically, if you're a Chapstick kind of girl, you're fine.

ALSO, this outfit is literally what I look like everyday: cardigan over shirt, skinny jeans, and boots. Excellent choices if I do say so myself.

V. said...

The color looks beautiful! You're off to a much better start than I had- I rocked hot pink lipstick throughout much of junior high.

I think the main point of liner is to keep lipstick from "bleeding" onto the skin around your mouth. So if your lipstick is staying put without, I wouldn't bother.

What Would a Nerd Wear said...

aw, thank you guys so much! sounds like i need to get my hands on some nude lipliner...the sephora girl encouraged me to get red and fill in my lips, but it does kinda make them dry!
can i put chapstick over or under the lipstick, or will that smudge it?

Color looks great. Not sure if anyone else has mentioned it, but don't forget to prime your lips first with some lip balm. Lip liner helps make the lipstick last longer. Line your lips and then fill them in.

had to click through to comment as soon as I saw your lipstick! it's a vundebar color on you! and especially with the neutral + mustard outfit... it really shines :) good call on having it be your only accessory. also your hair looks fab.

I go back and forth on liner... some days I want it, others not so much. one tip that I've heard over and over again is that for brighter shades, applying using a lip brush is helpful. it distributes the color evenly so that you don't end up with splotchy lips as it fades throughout the day, and also gives you more control.

Brittany Pruett said...

The liner I use is the same shade as my lipstick, so if the lipstick does start to wear off, it's not noticeable.

This is what I've found works for me to help my lips stay comfortably moist. I apply the lip liner, fill it in, sweep on the lipstick, blot gently on a tissue, then put chapstick (SoftLips) on over all of it. It may soften the color a bit, but it does feel better.

Trisha said...

When I wear lipstick, I use a liner that matches my natural lip-tone, and I put it all over my lips. That way, you can't see the liner on the edges, but it helps the lipstick last longer.

That's what works for me!

I was all excited to reply because red lipstick is my new thing, but then I saw that you already have tons of comments, so I'll be brief:

That's a pinkish red on you, but it's not a bad thing. We have very similar coloring, I love Revlon Matte lipstick in Really Red (I blot) because I found that shiny reds were not so flattering. And clear lip liner rocks! It doesn't make you look older and it keeps the lipstick on your lips.

Mary said...

I also do not wear lipstick. I will wear lip gloss on occasion though. I like the color you have on. I find that the Sephora staff is pretty competent with their opinions on the products that they suggest for me.

You could get a nude lip liner, and use that just to keep the lipstick in place and keep it from feathering.

Lori said...

The red lipstick looks great you. I use a clear reverse lip liner from DuWop. It just kind of keeps the color from feathering out and looking weird in the middle of the day.

You've gotten tons of comments but I agree the lipstick is a lovely shade--especially pared with the mustard sweater. For less of a festive look you could look for a shade with a little more brown in it or something with a less pigmented, more sheer formula. Its not a proper grown-up lipstick, but for everyday wear, I love Clinique's almost lipstick in black honey and I have worn it since undergrad days(I'm now in my first term teaching as a newly-minted prof.) I think the shade and formula work for many complexions. As for a liner, I only wear it if I need to keep my lipstick fresh all day and won't have a chance to reapply. I have one shade that matches my lips pretty well and I use it as a base to help any color keep its grip.

You were so right to have your lips be the accessory. They really pop against the simple outfit and contrast with the yellow so nicely. I think this red/pink is awesome on you! The lipstick looks great on you. I'm a newbie to lipstick too, so I'm not sure I can properly comment on the colors but I really think it's perfect.

The few times I have worn lipstick, I have put a thin coat of lip gloss on first (chapstick, soft lips, anything I have around). I just do it because I don't like the feel of lipstick directly on my lips. Also, without the gloss, the lipstick sometimes stains my lips (but only parts...embarrassing). Being a teacher, I don't have time to reapply until lunch. I haven't had any trouble when I've used gloss; it just wears off naturally without looking blotchy.

Love the hair! How did you do it? My hair's almost getting long enough to do fun things like that.

I think the color looks fabulous on you. Sometimes women get red lipstick SO red, but I love yours!

I think this is the perfect red on you! I only wear lipliner if I feel like the lipstick is the smudging type. A little trick I love- to remove any lipstick that might rub off on my teeth, purse your lips, place your finger between your lips, and pull it out like a lollipop. That was weird to describe but hopefully you get the idea!

Not too pink. You remind me a bit of lighter-haired Camilla Belle in these pictures.

The lipstick looks fantastic, I would add a little clear lip gloss on top of it too to give it an "out of a magazine" look :-)

Steve Madden makes the best boots, love those!

LOVE the lipcolor! It's so old Hollywood, so glam, so cool, so sophisticated-without-trying. I'm really into red lipstick and lip gloss right now, but that's the first thing I noticed about this look (and noticed in the best possible way). Love it.

It works so well, too, with the crisp white shirt and the mustard yellow cardi.

Gosh, I could really comment on every single one of your outfits. I love that color - chartreuse perhaps? And red lipstick looks great on you! I recently started wearing lipstick, too. I have darker skin so it was always really hard for me to find a shade that looked good on me, but I found one so now I'm obsessed! I don't wear lipliner with mine unless it's a special occasion. I think it looks more natural and more like a lipstain without.
