How Do I Wear Thee, Let Me Count the Ways

Amidst the legions of gray cardigans in my closet is this cheerful mustard yellow cardigan that I got for my birthday a couple years ago. It's found its way into lots of outfits (on and off the blog) and has added a needed shock of color to my mostly gray, blue, brown, and white color palette. Here are some of the ways I've worn it:

Cardigan1

Cardigan2

Cardigan3

Looking through these, I wonder if I might be more inventive with color pairings (there is so much blue here!) and put it with reds or oranges or even dark greens more often and not just fall back on it as a way to add color to a plain-Jane pairing. Sartorial resolution for the new year?

It certainly is a yummy and useful piece! I always admire it when it shows up on your blog. How about a patterned scarf for a belt--that would be an easy way to mix it with more colors.

Happy New Year!

Is that cardigan CABI? My mom sells CABI, and I'm wearing this exact cardigan in my outfit post a few days ago. Cool! xo

Have you tried pairing the mustard cardigan with some deep purple? Complementary colors and all. It is interesting that you see a lot of blue in those pictures, because when I look at them I see a lot of pairing with brown. That sweater really works great for you!

I just purchased a mustard cardigan, so this post couldn't have come at a better time! Thanks for the inspiration!

I adore that mustard cardigan! I'm resolving to try to be a bit more bold with color in the New Year - I seem to always stick to blacks and greys...

It's fun seeing all the ways you've worn that cardigan. My favorite is the bottom middle pic because I think the red lipstick looks stunning both on you and with that cardigan!

I love it with the red tights in the last photo. Perfect! I love those unexpected pieces that end up being so incredibly useful and pretty!

This is interesting! You'd normally think a color like this would be hard to pair... but look at your outfits! I love how you styled your looks and made it more interesting with the cardigan.

I just read your post, and immediately felt smug, because I have a mustard cardigan, and I was SURE I had paired in with many colorful outfits. Then I went back into my photo archives, and....no dice. Silly memory, it's not nice to play tricks. I did wear it with blue and more blue the other day. That's something, right?

PS-If this posts twice, I apologize. Blogger started freaking out when I tried to post the first time, and it didn't seem to go through.

I was inspired by you earlier this month with the one you wore for 30 for 30.

I love the mustard cardigan. I've been wanting one and almost made the purchase at Target yesterday :) I love your blog. Your style is very similar to mine. I've been dressing this way for years. One thing I've picked up from you, though, is the knee-hi socks with tights and flat boots trend. No one does it better than you :) I like your blog persona - sweet and humble. Not many of them are the latter, it seems.

By the way I agree with the anonymous comment above. You do have a sweet and humble blog persona. Too many fashion bloggers are online snobs and I never get that vibe from you!

I love all the ways you have worn it. Now, I just have to learn to dress creativily.

It looks great. I feel like this is a very "you" color. If I can say that. Because I know you and all... lol

I have this same cardigan. Thanks for all the helpful ideas. I would never have thought to wear it with red. Love the mustard and red together. So bright together. I am going to wear the cardigan with purple. I hope you will too. Happy New Year!

I have a mustard cardigan - a bit darker, more gold-coloured than yours - and I've been shocked by just how many different colours it goes with. Like you, I started out just pairing it with blue, but I've since found that it looks great with deep purples, reds, dark greys, browns, teal and forest green. In fact, as far as my closet goes, the mustard cardigan has become a fairly reliable neutral.

Oh how wonderful to see all these looks together; you've certainly managed to use this sweater well! I just did a similar retrospective on the yellow heels I got a few months ago -- it's funny how you think the color wouldn't go with much, but it somehow really inspires and challenges you to be more creative and wear the piece a ton!

Love the yellow cardigan. You made a great purchase!

Amazing! I usually ignore the cardigans in my closet, but the way you used it as an accent/pop of color is great. Now only if I had such a color...

Happy New Year,Everybody!!

This color always makes me feel like Colonel Mustard (in the library with a wrench!).. Today I wore a similar color.. and I'm running out of ideas to wear it with. This came just in time to give me some inspiration. The colors are great. Sometimes going with what works and looks good on you is all that matters. But this color would look great with a chartreuse!

Happy New Year!

you've certainly gotten your wear out of this lovely cardigan! i'm most definitely on the search for a mustard yellow cardigan.

i'm SUCH a fan of the second-to-last look. i could live in a cardigan, skinnys, and boots. the red lips against that cardigan and crisp white shirt looks divine. (:

happy new year!! looking forward to following you throughout 2011 (:

I am right there with you on needing to change up color. I seriously wear blacks all the time. I've more recently branched out to browns, but holy moly I need some color! You should make it your resolution!

Mustard yellow is one of my favorite colors. You should try pairing it with forest greens and plum purples!

Love it. I grabbed a very similar cardigan from Target right before the last 30/30 challenge started, and I had to stop myself from wearing it 5 times a week for those 30 days. I definitely think reds and oranges would look great with it.

i love the mustard cardigan and also find that it's such a versatile piece! i love seeing how you've styled it. i never especially like how it looks with the red tights in the last picture. will have to try something like that myself!

I have two mustard cardigans (what? They're sort of different!) I wear them constantly! I don't know what it is about that color, but it just goes with everything!

It's great that you have found so many ways to wear that sweater - it's not the easiest color to wear but you pull it off so well. I have a few pieces that seem to sneak into most outfits, and most of them are bright colors too - it's such a great pick-me-up for both mood and style.

i have started to associate that color with you and one other fash blogger! i love it!

Ah, so that's what they call a hero piece! Who would have thought a mustard-coloured item could be so versatile? Particularly love it with the red tights. I'd branch out into more colour if I were you - it suits you!

I have a cardigan just like that (Except it's from Target) that I love to wear. It's just such a fun color! Thanks for the inspiration!

Baby Duck! What a useful post since I have that sweater as well. I always wear it with jeans and a white t-shirt. BORING! I'll try to jazz it up a bit...just for you. Oh, my fashionable and far away friend.

Hi Tania - I love your site and when I saw this post about your mustard cardigan I thought immediately of E.'s love for her mustard tops. You've already done some great outfits with this, and I hope that some of her color combinations might work well for you too. She posted a bunch of pics here: www.academichic.com/2010/05/14/14-may-2010-all-over-yellow/ and then did a post specifically about her mustard blouson top: www.academichic.com/2010/09/10/10-september-2010/. I hope these help you find even more ways to wear your mustard cardi. It looks great on you! I'm on the hunt for one myself!
