Traveling

Although I'm organized in most areas of my life, I get inexplicably flustered when it comes to packing. Packing turns into frantic circles between my closet and dresser until I eventually become paralyzed. So lately I've taken to writing little notecards for each day I'll be away, and what I need to prepare for and taking photos of what I'll need to bring for those activities. It considerably reduces my anxiety about forgetting something important and helps my weak, paralyzed packing brain visualize the minimum number of items I need bring. Silly? Undoubtedly yes. But life-saving for an addled grad-student brain? Certainly.

I love this packing idea. I could really use it. I have an issue packing items I think would be good for wherever I'm going and end up with very few outfits. You're solved my problem!

Great idea! I'm doing this for Thanksgiving! I went on a TWO DAY TRIP last week & thought, with the remix, things would be so! much! better! I'll pack in minutes! How did it become harder??? More accessories to cloud the brain?? But this? This I can do!

Your notecard idea looks brilliant. Currently I just kind of shove things in my suitcase, maybe folded, and hope it all works out. Underwear always goes in first, just because I guess I feel I can handle anything as long as there's clean underwear ;)

I really struggled in packing for Ireland. I know it'll be in the 40 degree range, but somehow that is not helping me picture what I'll want to wear...

Packing posts are my favourite! What a great idea for organizing too. Not silly in my books!

Not that silly I'd say - I applaud your organisation!

This is brilliant I usually do this but I write things down instead of photograph them, but I should start doing this!

Great post! I also tend to be a terrible packer, but I used a modified version of Closet Confection's packing list (find it here http://closetconfections.com/post/776758827/packing-list-san-francisco-edition) for this Thanksgiving trip. Printing out that list, as well as her tip on trying on outfits together before packing, made my packing the easiest it's ever been!

I plan on doing the same thing for Thanksgiving break since I too am a terrible packer. Great idea!

People are sometimes amazed at how little I pack, or at least how small my baggage is when I travel. They key is to try to incorporate pieces you can wear multiple times for a plethora of functions. So what you're doing isn't silly at all! It's a way for you to get everything organized in your head so you pack less. Kudos!

This is a really good idea! I get frazzled when I have to pack too. I always forget something important. I think I'm going to give your notecard idea a try. Have a happy Thanksgiving!

this reminds me, i have to pack! it's always good to plan out everything ahead of time, right? but i never seem to do it. may have to take a cue from you and get academic with some outfit flash cards. :)

Great idea. I am the worst packer. It drives my husband NUTS. He is mystified how I can have a whole suitcase full of clothing and can't make a single outfit out of it.

I love to be organized too! This is a great idea and I might just have to do this the next time I go somewhere! CUTE CLOTHES by the way :)

You have inspired me to do the same thing for my travels this week- great idea!

Cute idea! Maybe this will help me with my packing. If only I leave enough time for this!

that's really cute idea! I usually always over or under pack.

When packing I lay out the outfits like this too! Especially if I am going to a scientific meeting where I will need all kinds of outfits (casual, business, dressy). The one thing I always pack too many of...shoes. I like how you chose two very versatile/cute shoes that go with the 4 outfits!

Wow, I am very impressed!! I make lists upon lists when I'm traveling but I like the note card idea!

I have to draw little pictures of each outfit! I can't decide if 30 for 30 is making my Thanksgiving holiday packing easier or harder.

Great idea! I'm so neurotic that I keep a running Google doc with ideas for outfits...that cuts down on my time getting ready in the morning AND packing.

I do this too!!! Exact. Helps me plan.

This is a great idea. I'm going away to see family over Christmas and am already fretting about what I'm going to pack (there's extra-pressure to look cute with my Mississippi family!). I'm going to try this little trick called "planning" that you have employed and see how it goes :)

wow, I am impressed. Sort of feeling inadequate about my packing and organization now!

I write down all of my outfits by day (including evening outfits if I need them). Then I write a master packing list from my outfit list. I LOVE the pic idea though! Seriously, it's so much easier to pack when you know what you're going to wear.

I've never really thought about packing whole outfits - I usually just throw a bunch of things into my suitcase that I think will work together, and then discover later that I don't have the right shoes/belt/cardigan for a particular combination. This is a brilliant idea! Would save so much "What can I put together from what I've packed?" angst!

That is such a good idea. I also get super flustered when I'm trying to pack. It seems like I end up packing everything I don't need and leave out the important stuff!

I so hear you on this. I get horrible anxiety just thinking about packing, especially now that I have to pack for kids too. I'm am so doing this next time.

Could I borrow your brain for my exams, I'm nowhere near organised enough for them...luckily they're in January so I don't need to worry just yet.

I like the idea of taking pictures so you don't forget something that's such a clever idea. You're utterly brilliant, really you are!

um, this is so SO awesome. totally taking note.

I do the same thing!!! Ahh, love this. I hate packing and unpacking, and I always fret about leaving something...anything... behind. I make a list and lately I've succumbed to taking cell pictures just in case I need a reminder.

Bridget said...

I love this. Packing is such a wonderful challenge, and the smaller you can pack, the better!

My mom used to make me do this for an actual week, but I wouldn't be going any where. You know? When I pack I always just stuff a bunch of my favorite things in my bag, and just go from there but this is a MUCH better system. I always seem to over pack.

Good idea...i always find it hard to choose what to pack for a trip longer than three days and multiple events...

Nice work! I always over-pack no matter what. I keep going through what-ifs and before I know it I'm going on a weekend trip with 6 shirts and 4 pairs of pants. Eek!

this is a great idea! sometimes i come up with new outfits at home and then i tell myself, "okay, you can wear this outfit the next time it's cold/warm." Then when that day comes when i am stuck in an outfit crunch, i forget... thanks for the idea.

SUCH a great idea. I was just out on a research trip for 4 days, and I thought I had packed fairly well, but realized when I got there that I had forgotten all my thought-out outifts, and looked a bit dissheveleved for much of my time there. I will use your system next time. Brilliant!

Very smart. I packed for Thanksgiving travels at the end of last week and am regretting some of the 30X30 items I left home - and some of the ones I brought...
