Make It New

Although I am not one of the six people on earth who looks good in yellow, I'm willing to look a little jaundiced today for the sake of this skirt, which just may be the coolest thing I own. Sadly, it's been languishing in my closet because it hasn't fit quite right since I graduated from college and laid off the Keystone.

Make It New

So following Pound's dictum to "make it new," I got the skirt taken in an inch or three. And thank goodness--it's good to have you back in rotation, old friend. The only issue is that I'm stupendously uncreative about my pairings--I've almost always worn it with yellow, navy, or gray. I love the yellow and blue polka dots but they squeeze the sartorial inventiveness right out of me. What else do you think it would go with? Help, please!

P.S. Sorry this is so late in the day--blogger was having a conniption this morning and wouldn't let me post a thing. Is there anything crueler on a Monday morning? Methinks not.

I love how so many of your basic pieces are from Old Navy, so nice and affordable, I recently bought a bunch of plain v-neck t-shirts from them at $8 a pop!

You should experiment with some other colors a basic red or green might work nicely with that skirt!

I think this would also look good with red!

OH LADY. That skirt is a joy to behold. So glad you got it altered so that I can see it more often. I MEAN so that you can wear it more often.

I love the random pop of yellow on that top. It's adorable.

Great skirt! I think it would look great with a cobalt blue top.

I am crazy for this skirt; having feelings of regret all over again!

navy + yellow both look great with green. a pale pink or peachy tone would be a good combo, too. sepia/cognac would be a nice neutral that's a little more complex but not crazy. i'd also try small prints, like a tiny/ditsy floral or gingham-- you could keep those monochromatic/tonal.

I drank more in grad school than I did undergrad, and probably drink more now than when I was in grad school. hmm... funny or sad, I am not sure... :P

oh, and I second the suggestion of cobalt!

oh my gosh i love that skirt! it looks wonderful on you! i would also pair it with yellow, navy, or gray (since i'm so predictable), but if i was feeling risky, i might wear it with something red!

Any color! Red....or orange, I think. Or gray. You look great! Love those shoes.

This is one of my favorite outfits. I love the fact you matched the yellow in the skirt to the top. But I actually think the skirt is very versatile and will go with almost anything. What about a bright purple?

I love the skirt - it's great that you were able to alter it and wear it again!

As for me, I'd put just about any color with it, but especially turquoise!

For the record, you do not look jaundiced at all --- you look quite lovely and can pull off yellow really well!

I think the skirt would be fun with a contrasting top, perhaps in red or orange, or maybe something in a different pattern. Can't wait to see more of this skirt in your rotation!

La Historiadora de Moda said...

You look great in yellow, lady. I promise!

I think it would look great with a dark purple, coral, orange, green, or blue. I think it might also have potential with your bicycle t-shirt, but you'll have to see how the shapes play together.

This skirt is toooooooo cute! I think a crisp white top would look great if you added a belt to break it up. I'm a fan of the pale pink idea as well.

That is such a COOL skirt! I think you can get away pairing it with any color of shirt you like just as long as you have that same color for your shoes to balance it with.

Oh my goodness---LOVE THIS! The skirt is so perfect with the top (those 2 yellow polka dots rock!). And I love your wording---since you "laid off the Keystone." :) I need a more fun way of saying "since I lost weight" hahaha. Will brainstorm.

The new header looks great too!

Great skirt girl. Because the print is so bold, you could pair it with a teensy print on top- a baby dot or stripe in navy or grey would be so cute and funky. Like the other readers said, another solid on top would be cute too- rich orange or kelly green, or heather grey. I would not go in the blue family or purple, risky to clash with the navy dot, and your skirt is the focal piece here, you don't want to look like a circus. =) Love it already.

thanks for all the ideas, friends! i think coral or peach is a great idea...definitely going to try next time :)

Purple! I love yellow and purple together. Though I sort of think that anything would look awesome with that super cool skirt...

OMG, I am IN LOVE with this outfit! It's so mod and fresh, and also a little conservative in a way that makes this teacher swoon. I can think of ways to wear it with gray, green, a crisp white button down, but honestly I think it's perfect just the way it is!

Fabulous skirt! Love it! I think it would look great with a reddish or even pink top!

Welcome back indeed! That skirt is so witty and pretty! I think how you wore it looks just right, sometimes there is no need to go crazy...especially when the skirt is so darn cute!

ClothesFox said...

This skirt is begging to be paired with a red blouse. Red would be PERFECT! I say a tailored short sleeved button-up tucked in, maybe with a little bit of something going on, a tiny ruffled lapel, but nothing major.

Lovely skirt (it's so nice when you can alter things and make them more wearable and give them a second life). I love the pattern!

Blogger wouldn't work for me either!! I didn't have it back until late this afternoon. Very frustrating.

I think you could wear lots of bright with this skirt (which is fabulous, by the way, as are you). Just compare how the bright color in question (like a red, pink or a kelly green) would look with the yellow, and go with it, since the navy and white are such great neutrals. Looking forward to seeing this skirt on you again!

Ella Valeris Morrol said...

Hey, if you don't feel comfortable with that yellow you should try a lighter shade... or maybe go to a completely different direction, w/pink? Idk the skirt has to little yellow spots that is almost screaming "give me another color to play with" with a really tiny voice, you know you want to...

BTW I just opened my very first fashion blog and I’d LOVE to se what you think about it… Wanna check? http://ella-fashionista.blogspot.com/

Okay, this is probably my fav. outfit of yours. And who said yellow doesnt look good on you? It looks fabulous ... and that skirt is to die for. I find excellent stuff at j.crew and old navy, I must say! Also I am loving your hair in these pictures :o)

You look fantastic in this outfit! A little more city than I usually see from you...
Regarding pairing, I'd try a contrasting blue...perhaps baby blue? Electric? Even turquoise looks interesting with navy.

PS Thanks for stopping my my blog the other day xxoxox

I'm thinking a nice green or beige would go well with the skirt and not be overly match-y. But I know exactly what you mean about getting stuck on utilizing the actual colors already in the skirt...

Biba said...

Absolutely gorgeous skirt. I would love it with a bit of Kelly Green as well.

Chloe, Butterfly Cupcakes said...

I really love it with the yellow but I think you could do it with pretty much any colour. It could be fun with red to do a primary themed outfit or even green as blue+yellow=green as I'm sure you know, haha. Might be cool to do with a pattern mixing combo, maybe a pin stripe top.

Alex said...

I adore that skirt! I didn't even realise till the second photo that it had yellow polka dots (observant, moi?) The jumper looks fab with it but is quite a strong shade of yellow. If you're worried about looking jaundiced (which you totally don't) perhaps something paler might be better?

I'd go for a lovely green top. Green and yellow and blue are fab together.

Jill said...

I love everything about this outfit! The polka dots are so jaunty--NOT jaundiced. I think you could definitely expand the color palette--brown, green, purple--navy and yellow look good with so many colors!

what a lovely outfit!! I agree with everyone about pairing it with purple or green!

I also suggest something in the red family - red or fuchsia or coral or peach.

And, I echo the recommendation of a second print. Florals or stripes would be great.

Adorbs! Other options for pairings: teal, aqua, purple...

I'm thinking saturated colors, not primary colors.

That way you look like WOWIE without looking like kindergarten.

Oh, and I think you can do yellow. In the lighting here at least, you look pink enough that it doesn't wash you out.

Rock on. Love the outfit.
