They sent me running back to my closet and left Christopher feeling very smug this morning.
Although I luuurrrved the combination in theory, I think the skirt's pattern is just a little too bold to be mixed with this particular shirt. Maybe a patterned shirt in a darker color (like navy) wouldn't have been so Magic Eye-inducing. Anyway, this is what I ended up in, feeling much more like myself:

Though I don't often post about the outfits that get left on the cutting room floor, I know this is the kind of thing that happens to a lot of people after the get in front of a friend, a mirror, or a camera. But I guess this is how we end up spending 3276 hours of our lives getting ready for the day, huh?
P.S. Last day to enter to win a Shabby Apple dress...

Honestly, I kind of love the first outfit, but you're right that the second one is more you. In any case, that skirt is fabulous!!
I'm with Clare on this one ... maybe you can bust it out again next time you go partying, since that first one is rather wildly fun :o)
That teal shirt does fantastic things for your skin complexion and hair color!
I think the first outfit looks fine, since the colors in the shirt match those in the skirt.
I like the teal shirt too. The color is great on you.
I love the first outfit. I think it looks fab!
I love both outfits! I have a feeling my man would have said the same thing if I'd worn the first one too.
You're brave for mixing patterns! :)
I agree with you, the first shirt is too light for the skirt, but it's good you were willing to give it a try! Love the outfit, I keep meaning to make some of those skirts! That's depressing, that's soooo much time getting ready!
I like the second the best. The belt really pops with the overall blue tone. Love it.
I actually really like both outfits, so you are one stylish lady indeed in my book!
I also LOVE your new header! Superfresh!
I think you could have pulled it off with a wide light-blue belt.
I don't think the first outfit looks bad although I'm really not a fan of pink so I'm agreeing with your thoughts on a navy checked shirt instead.
The skirt fabric is just amazing :D
Agreed, the first one was too... much. The second try is adorable, though.
I had outfit issues today, too, so I feel your pain. My shirt collar kept popping out like it was 1973, so I just said to hell with it and put on a cardigan.
there might be something wrong with me, but I love the first one!
The teal tee is a better bet, but the first shirt is pretty cool, too. Just a little more "out-there."
I think the first one works because of the color tie in, at least on my screen it looks like the pink in the shirt and the big pink cog on the front of the skirt are almost the same color. Mixing patterns is "in" you know! That said, I would also have felt more comfortable in the second outfit! haha
Hey! I loved the first outfit. It was a very wild take on mixing patterns but it WORKED! It really did :o) ... Another WINNER skirt from your closet. The teal is pretty too !!!
I have to say, I kind of like the first combination as well - think of it in terms of music:
some music is nice and easy on the ears, it catches you at first, and you can bop along without anything uncomfortable - think Lady Gaga (strictly musically, not in terms of fashion) or O-Zone - or even Mozart or Haydn.
Other music may hit you uncomfortably at first, may be a bit complicated and take some time to understand, but once it sinks in a bit, it's ecstatic - think Bjork or Radiohead - or maybe Shostakovich or Górecki.
I loved this fisrt outfit and I have to agree with Kelly up here, because the button-up color it's the same of some circles on the pattern, BUT I loved the second look best. I'm also afraid of mixing patterns. This combination is perfect, casual and nerdy. And this yellow belt is my favorite on you!=)
xo, have a great day!
You look amazing both ways, but I definitely like the second one better :) You're so cute! ♥
Like everybody else, I love both outfits! The pattern on that skirt is so fun & vibrant-- love it!
I love both outfits. Especially the switch up in proportions of the first. Maybe in a solid though.... Don't let your boy influence your style too much. Stick to your guns!
Ramblings of a Small Town Girl
I have to agree I like the second outfit better - that is super cute!
The color feature you asked about is called "color accent" on Canon point-and-shoots :o)
i love your skirt! i tried to make my own in a similar way, however i had considerably less success. i love both outfits but i see what you mean about the first shirt which is lovely by the way!

Awesome blog. I will be coming more often.
I know that feeling when you think something is going to come off perfectly and then something just isn't right. I wish I wasn't such a sleep whore and could take my photos in the morning. It might save me some embarassment.
I like the first combination a lot.
To me the mix of colors and patterns is good because the colors seem to have the same hue and the patterns similar dimensions. I think the pattern up top with the blouse provides a nice balance to the gathered skirt.
Maybe it looks different in person....
I'd like to see it again with a wider belt that would anchor the two togehter.
I love when two garments meet unexpectedly in the closet and make a mix match. The first outfit is aaaaaalmost a statement. I would try it again another day.
I oddly prefer the first outfit.
I generally love the whole mixing of two different prints though. :)
I like the first one because I think the colors really do work buttttt I probably would have done the same thing and made the switch. The second one is very WWaNW, very Tania :-)
Thanks for sharing a cut outfit!
I'm so afraid of mixing patterns... The second outfit looks great! As interesting as the first outfit was, I think the paleness of the shirt contrasted with the darkness of the skirt in a weird way. Good try though :)
Lovely shoes:)
I really love both looks, but having pattern-mixed last week and felt like it wasn't entirely me (though there was something about it I really liked), I understand why you went with number two. I love the vibrant colors in that awesome skirt (that you MADE! how cool!).
well i luurve the first outfit, but i am not one to shy away from pattern+color mixing (sometimes to a fault, probably).
I kind of feel like the first look would have actually worked really well with a different belt and shoes. The second *is* very you.
Haha...boyfriends...they just don't get it.
I like the second one better with the blue shirt. I change my outfit at least once in the morning. That skirt rocks too btw!
Haha, I wouldn't say the first outfit is a failure but I definitely like the second one better. I agree the first one would have been better with a darker shirt as I think that skirt adds too much contrast to an already stand out skirt.
I loved the first outfit! You should definitely think about it again in the future!

My husband knows better than to tell me I don't match by now, because I so rarely do. I do think the top is a bit crazy, but in a good way.
Ha, been there. Though I usually don't figure out how horrible it looks until I'm at work. Ugh.
I love your skirt!
Melanie@UnravelledThreads
I'm with you. The second outfit makes a lot more sense.
I definitely see where you were going with the first. The shirt's pattern isn't too-too bold, and definitely lets the skirt take most of the attention. The proportions are fine, and the color palate does alright together... something just didn't gel, I suppose.
These things happen too often. What happens between the mirror and the camera? Too often I like what I'm wearing, and then I see it on camera and everything changes!
Love,

I actually really liked the first outfit!
I absolutely love the print you've selected for this skirt. So adorable.
I really feel like you could have rocked the first version! The colors in the top blouse were a spot-on match to the skirt, and the pattern was subtle enough to balance it out. But the second is lovely, too :)
My husband's version of "you're not going to wear that, are you?" are "it's just going to take me a while to warm up to it..."
I think you're right that it's the color of the shirt in the first outfit that doesn't work--too soft and muted to hold its own with the skirt.
Love the second look, though, and the idea of posting outfits that get scrapped...it keeps it real and lets readers know that even outfits that seem thrown together seldom are.
I think that boys just don't get pattern mixing :) I really, really like the first outfit and thing it definitely works. Though, that blue is just radiant on you!
I think that first combination was great! I love it so much. The second is not too bad either. Lovely pattern on the skirt! I have yet to make my own.
死亡是悲哀的,但活得不快樂更悲哀。...........................................................................
Haha, I'm usually a fan of pattern mixing, but seeing the two looks side by side makes it very clear who the better one is. It's only too bad the boy now thinks he was right.
Chic on the Cheap
Awesome skirt. Just remebered a skirt I've only half-finished. Groan. Will have to complete it soon.
i love your pattern mixing, but i probably would never be bold enough to wear it out of the house.
Ha! I feel like I will join the others who said they loved the first version, I actually think it looks really good :) But the second version is great too, that skirt you made is awesome and I'm so envious of those thrifted flats.
I really want to experiment with making a skirt as soon as I get that sewing machine on my wish-list when I get home. S.
I love that skirt! I can't believe you made it. It looks awesome with the belt.
I definitely like the second outfit better. But I don't think the first one is bad ...maybe a bit too busy.
The second outfit is a perfect balance between the print and the colours.

I like the first outfit-maybe with a different wider belt-but I love the fact you were willing to try!
I like both!
i actually kind of liked the first one - i thought the pink went really well with the skirt, and the pattern on the shirt was very low key.
I think the shirt looked great! You should of kept it on and replied with "why yes, yes I am wearing this today!
it took me a minute, but i kinda like the first one, too! the pink in the shirt picks up the pink in the skirt ...
what i really want to talk about is YOUR SHOES. so jealous - what a perfect pair for summer.
I actually really liked the first one!
clothed much, a modest fashion blog
you have theeeee cutest belts! love them!
Both outfits are adorable! I loooove all the colors in the skirt!
