The Awkward Phase

Sometimes this part of spring reminds me of the awkward phase in middle school, when your arms felt too long for your body and you had braces and you loped, rather than walked because your legs were so gangly. You were right in the awkward middle part of growing up, just like this awkward middle part of spring where it is 40 degrees in the morning and 70 degrees in the middle of the day.

The Awkward Phase

And I can never figure out what to wear in this awkward phase. I have to admit I'm getting sick of my tights, but I don't feel like wearing jeans. This morning I tried boots with bare legs (I figure it is halfway between having my legs covered and not). I think I like the way it turned out, actually and it's a pretty good in-between look for the combination freezing/sweltering weather pattern. Have you abandoned your winter things yet or are you still working tights and sweaters? Are you in this awkward phase, too?

I like this outfit! It's still freezing here, and just getting colder every day.

I totally agree! I love your awkward-phase metaphor. I've worn tights a couple times, though I really don't want to. I just want to wear skirts and bare my legs and not wear trousers. Can it just be warm already?

I love my tights don't get me wrong, but lately I have been getting sick of them. I too went the boot route today.

Love the color of your skirt, it is refreshing and you look great!

Love your awkward phase look! We definitely have cooler mornings but not as cold as yours (read: 60s in am, 80s in pm) so don't have as much need for transtional clothes. I guess spring is what layers are for!

Kristin said...

oh gosh, yes! Unfortunately, my requirement for covered legs means at least nylons for me, although the chill this morning had me break out some thicker tights. Good thing it's also chilly in my lab (I guess) :o)

since i'm not too far away from you, i know exactly what you are talking about! most regular college gals dont have any trouble with this because they do not wake up til 9 or 10, but i have to open the coffee shop and be out the door by 7 am! i think your look is perfect for the awkward middle school spring dance.

I gave up on tights on the weekend but I felt odd! :)And so so pale! So its back to tights (or stockings/nylons) for the next little while...

Fab look! Love the colours :D

The weather here is very strange lately too and it's difficult to dress for commuting and long days. Mostly I go for layers and too hot over dressing too cool (although I made the mistake of thinking it would be warmer today). I love the color of your new DIY skirt. I'm so in awe of your skills. What is the material made out of?
Also, boots with the socks is such a great look!

I am totally feeling you on this time of year. I haven't done tights, but I've done leggings, socks and a whole lot of pants.

What material did you use for this skirt? I LOVE the color.

I really love this outfit! It's definitely my favorite of the past week-- the way the yellow works with the pale blue (or gray?) stripes, the way the orange skirt gives it a pop.

I'm pretty reluctant to give up my tights-- they're such an easy accessory to add-- so I'm sort of relishing this in-between time.

SO TRUE! I biked to work today in 35 degrees, but it'll be 70 when I go home. Bah!

I think the socks/boots/bare legs combo is a great compromise.

I'm definitely in the awkward phase too. I'm wearing a lot of dresses and skirts though and just dealing with being a bit chilly in the mornings. I did do the dress and tall boots look today as well! It seemed like a good day for it.

I wish I had the good sense to put on boots. I've been freezing in my flats all week!

Is that the skirt that you linked in the tutorial a few weeks ago? I really like it!

Still working the tights :-)
That skirt is my favorite color ever.

Yes, I know what you mean about the awkward stage. It's so hard to dress according to the weather when it's so mood! But I love everything about this outfit!

jesse.anne.o said...

Yes, I just want it to go one way or the other at this point. It's the worst when you hear it's going to be almost 70 during the day and then 50 at night. So when I leave for work it's 70 but I also have to be dressed for a 20 degree drop for my evening commute?

i am more and more tempted to hijack my mom's sewing machine and make my own skirt already!! ps: i heart those boots! :)

dagmara said...

Where'd did you get the pattern for the skirt; the yellow linen one in particular? Jcrew has one that is very similar.

We've been getting 30 degree temperature swings. It makes getting dressed a trying activity. I've resorted to lots of layers that I can peel off around midday (tank+collared shirt+vest+blazer, f'rinstance) and, yes, tall boots with chunky socks under a skirt instead of tights or leggings. I think it's a great springtime look, and you're totally rocking it! I love the orange skirt with the brown boots.

Loving the color of that skirt - good job! I totally agree, it's so much to think of for one outfit... can I bike in this? will I be cold outside? hot inside? will it rain later? if I take off some of these layers to bike home when it's warm later, will they fit in my overstuffed bag with my heels? gaa!

The scarf and skirt work so well together, and I love the belted stripes. My go-to over the past few weeks has been fishnet tights- warmth without the heaviness.

I am SO in the awkward phase! It was sunny this morning, and I leave for Florida in an hour (!!) so I opted for flip flops. Oh, thanks Boston, it's 35 degrees out? You always keep me on my toes (especially when they are freezing!). Ok, enough of that. I feel your pain about the tights--I am counting on rocking the boots and bare legs until probably June, at the rate we're going, but it's sort of ok by me because I love my boots something fierce.

I think this is absolutely amazing. I need to make a skirt with a covered waistband ASAP! I love the orange and the yellow and the grey together. It's so unexpected but works so well.

It started snowing today. I'm so over Utah.

um, hello perfect outfit for awkward time! I love the warm colors, and am amazed at your craftiness in creating that skirt with your bare hands!

Yes ~ I am too! Ready for some warmer weather!

I love all the skirts you have made. Once I unpack my sewing machine I will have to give it a try.

Great colour combo, really like it.
Spring has finally arrived in Germany...i am not willing to wear tweed anymore, just going for silk, cotton and linen.

I'm SO with you on the awkward phase. I've found myself wearing jeans a whole lot more lately because it's hard to find anything else to wear that's season/temperature appropriate.

LyddieGal said...

The completely unpredictable spring weather is such a pain! The days when I take a chance and dress for warm weather, it's cold and I freeze, then the following day I'll dress warmer and swelter!

I love your cute orange skirt and your awkward photo!

these handmade skirts of yours are awesome! i'm loving the color you chose for this one (especially with that scarf!) :)

and i definitely know what you mean about that awkward phase. i'm not sure whether or not to add a layer or take off a layer!

I love your in-between look! And, truly, when I first saw the skirt I thought it was one from JCrew I've been wanting! Nice job.

i wish UT was at that awkward phase. it SNOWED this morning! GROSS. i LOVE your skirt! it looks professional! i'm impressed.

Julie said...

Yup. Still feeling awkward. Went bare-legged with a wool skirt and coat today.....yikes. But you look great!!

Lovely!

I've been living in jeans. I find it hard to care at the moment, it's cold and rainy most of the week and I feel so 'blah' as of late, so I've just been throwing things on!

Kendi Lea said...

friend, if this is your awkward stage then I'm jealous.

You look adorable. I love that skirt color, it looks just like this one that I want from J.Crew. The boots and the bare legs work perfectly here as well. So cute.

myedit said...

So true about it being the awkward time of spring...however, you bridge the cold and warm gap nicely.

I know what you mean, but you certainly don't *look* awkward. I don't know where in IL you are, but the weather in Chicago is really hard to dress for this spring. I can't believe it's almost May and I could really wear boots (though I refuse to).

phew, so glad any awkward phases are gone! you look cute here

This weather is so difficult! I'm used to it being basically summer by this time of year. And hmmm I have all of the pieces to construct this outfit... I may do so tomorrow...

I LOVE all of the colors in your outfit. Super cute.

I love the outfit, I want the orange skirt!

I'm coming from the opposite direction, coming from summer going into winter and yes I am in the awkward phase of winter, while its cold in the morning and then warm in the middle of the day, and you just don't know what to wear to be comfortable for the full day! I understand completely.

Clare said...

Tania, the "awkward phase" suits you just fine. I adore the bright coloring of that skirt, and I love how it complements the scarf so perfectly. I'm definitely taking my layering tips from you this Spring!

I lovvvveee this outfit though--that skirt is fantastic and the blue stripes look great with it!!

I totally agree about how annoying/confusing/confounding the weather is at the moment. I can't wait to hit puberty, mature, and get to SUMMER!

Love your outfit in this post. The skirt is rad and the colors of the scarf, skirt, and top look great together.
