This morning while hemming and hawing over whether this skirt was too fancy for classes and an afternoon of studying, Christopher wisely said, "If you dress it down, it will look perfect for a day of studying." I didn't know that he even knew the phrase "dress it down" but it's a good thing--I love the way this turned out. I dressed down this kinda fancy skirt with a slouchy cardigan, a tee shirt, and mary janes (yes, clearly my new favorite shoes!). The top was one of the few I scored at Old Navy recently in the sale section for less than $5!

Top Detail

Now, an important question: does anyone have a recommendation for a good basic black cardigan? I've had this one for years and it is old-lady-librarian-baggy at this point and seriously needs an upgrade. I want something sleeker and more fitted (maybe a v-neck instead of a crewneck cardigan). Do you have one you want to trade, or have you seen one around that looks good?? Help, please!

Update: yes, I did bicycle in this skirt. No, it was not a good idea.

I have an awesome black cardi that I got at JCPenney by the designers originals line. It's very cozy and has a nice drape and fit to it. But it's crew neck. I would definitely check department stores first like Macy's and such and then maybe individual stores...

I have always had a hard time finding the perfect black cardi, it doesn't seem like there are alot of there for me. I am still trying.

I love what you did "dressing it down" and the color of the tee is great!

Love this outfit, you look great! Can't help you with the cardigan though, I'm still looking for the perfect black one too.

I recently got this black cardigan at J. Crew. I'm actually wearing mine today and I love it. It has pretty jewel-like buttons, and best of all, it's on sale right now. It is a crew neck, but I still think it's worth checking out:

Don't you just love it when they surprise us with phrases you never thought they knew.

I'm dying over your hair today. Love it!

Hooray for COLOR!

We will all always be looking for the Perfect Black Cardigan, I think. You might try Hanna Andersson, which I noticed has some cute v-neck cardigans. A little spendy, but it will last forever. I usually like the cardigans I get at Target, although a lot of them are 3/4 sleeve right now.

In case that link doesn't work, try this one instead: http://tinyurl.com/yf96pv6

Ah the boys - sometimes they say the wisest (and most unexpected) things. It just takes someone to step back and not over think it. The outfit looks casual and well put together.

You look simply marvelous, doll. Completely ladylike.

I swear by the J.Jill Essential Cardigans. They've got retro styling, but are just right, proportion-wise. Buy small, tho, they're cut big.

Gap has a cute v-neck cardigan right now, although it has 3/4 sleeves. I got it in brown, I liked it so much!

Love everything about this outfit! And I think it's awesome that Christopher broke out the phrase "dress it down".

The color of the ON top is just lovely.

I got one last summer at H&M that I love. It's V neck and it was pretty inexpensive. I think I wear it almost every day.

Christopher was right. My Christopher is generally quite smart about these things as well. That's neato!

I own two black cardigans. One cashmere from Macy's. It's lovely as a warm item, but it could definitely be more fitted. The second is from Forever 21. It's pretty awesome actually:

Great dressing down, though I think I'd agree that it's not the best cycling outfit. :) I love the bright color paired with the grey.
I also am a fan of your hair! I am in the process of deciding whether to grown mine out again; The only problem is that I am not coordinated enough to do anything with it.

I love the pink and the ruffles- they liven up the whole outfit.

i love the outfit and i LOVE your hairstyle! as for cardigans, i usually buy the cheapest black one - doesn't really matter the style as long as it fits well...i figure because its black, no one will be able to tell anyway

Love the mixing of dressy and casual elements. Kudos to Christopher for his sage advice.
I wear black cardigans from Uniqlo. Their cuts can be a tad conservative but they only use natural fibers and are way affordable. The store is in NYC but you can order online.

Wow, that skirt, that hair - it is a bit of a departure from your normal look. I like it though, especially the hair.

The pink top looks like a great color on you and gives the whole look a wonderful pop.

That embellished top is gorgeous!

I love the way you dressed down the skirt! I have two black cardigans and both of them are v neck so I've been on the lookout for a crew neck one... One of mine is a Marc by Marc Jacobs one that I found at a consignment store for $10 and it's awesome! I JUST bought one at TJ Maxx last week that is Nine West and super soft and has a subtle embellishment I love... I don't know if it's something that a lot of TJ Maxx's got, but it might be worth checking there!
