Did you ever read Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No-Good, Very Bad Day? In the book, Alexander doesn't get the shoes he wants and there's gum in his hair and his brothers are mean to him. I am having the grown-up version of the terrible horrible no good very bad day. I got an article rejected, a job rejection (from last week, even with all your good thoughts! sigh...), a freelancing client who won't pay me, and one of my advisers got a job offer at another school and is thinking of going and taking my roommate with him! Maybe I should move to Australia...

But because plane flights to Australia are expensive, I will do other things to cheer myself up, like wear this pretty necklace. And take broody pictures on the front porch.

Happily, I think bad things tend to come all in one blow, so I'm fairly certain I'm due for very good luck soon. Maybe I will stumble upon an undiscovered well filled with gold, or I'll find a Picasso next time I'm at the Goodwill, or all my students will skip into my classroom on Friday completely prepared for discussion....a girl can dream, right?

I'm a bike-riding bookworm in DC trying to make better use of a sometimes-vanilla closet. You can read a little more about this blog

aw thats horrible. i hate those kind of days. i am sure you will be better soon. and i love your necklace, very cute :)
Ugh. Sorry you had such a bad day. I hate those! But your necklace is super cute.
Aaaaawww, screw the haters (article rejector, job rejector, roomy rejector) and keep your head up in the sky!!
Bad days do come along every once in a while, no need to feel misery though. Just keep to your tracks, know your strengths and keep looking that good. It´ll pay out in the future!!
Aww, T.. I'm sorry you're having a bad day! I am ready for this week to be over too... then it's Spring Break! Have you already had yours? I dont' remember if you mentioned it.. Instead of Australia, you should move to Utah ;) And it is so funny - I am wearing a bib-necklace too! It is crocheted from a giveaway I won at Love Beatrice and I wore it with a gray top as well. Great minds think alike!

I love that book, although those days in real life just suck. Your necklace is awesome!
I find that bad things usually come in threes, so with a fourth on the horizon, you should definitely be getting some good luck soon! At least you look cute, even if your day's not so great!
Yikes, this even exceeds 'bad things happen in threes!'
Hope things look up soon--you look adorable, anyway!
I'm sorry you're having such a crummy day! At least you looked very cute in your purple flats and your fun necklace.
oh, sorry about your terrible day! You seem to have a good perspective on it though! On the bright side - I love this combination! The cropped pants are so flattering on you and I like the way you really made the necklace stand out! Here's hoping you find that Picasso!
Hey sorry about all these blows coming at once, but you do look awfully cute. Article and job rejections are sadly the reality of the academic life. And it doesn't mean that your not awesome, it just has something to do with "fit" and lots of arbitrary factors. (Our department did a job search this semester. Honestly, it's like sausage making- you don't want to know what goes into that process). Did they at least give you good feedback on the article? You can always make revisions and submit it to another journal. My very first article got a rejection that they never told me about, so I waited 9 months for the rejection. It later got published in a better journal. It's all part and parcel, and you'll do great! I swear.
As for the non-payer, does your school offer legal services? Ours did in graduate school, and sometimes a sternly written letter from a lawyer is ALL you need to get a the wheels turning. Sent via registered mail, of course.
This is a great post, I feel the same way sometimes! :)
You should follow my blog if you like it :)..

Aww, I am commiserating with you on your string of bad luck. I recently had a interview that started off, "well, there's a 70% chance that this position is already filled [and the job description has changed so I can give this job to a friend* (*not said but heavily implied)], do you still want to do the interview?" Gee, thanks.
I'm sorry you are having a bad day. That sucks. Chin up; hopefully tomorrow will be better!
At least you look very chic and pretty as you brood :o)
Sorry about the (short) string of badness, but with the bad comes the good and things should pick up for the better very soon!
aww I feel you - having one of those myself...but at least you look great! I hope things pick right back up for you!
you look lovely in these pictures, even if they are more morose than usual :) that necklace is lovely, and the purple flats were a great choice to add in some (dark) color.
I'm sorry about the crapness going on, but am happy for your optimism going forward :)
I love the Alexander book. I love Maurice Sendak! And I am so sorry about your terrible day! That's just lame!
i'm sorry to hear about all the negative news but good luck will soon come your way! i mean, you're able to take this gloomy, gray outfit and brighten it up with that gorgeous necklace and those purple flats! :)
I'm also a TA, and I laughed so hard at your wish that your students will "skip into class...completely prepared for discussion." That would be a very rare and grand day, indeed.
I'm sorry you're having a batch of bad luck, but I think you're absolutely right when it comes in chunks, and goodness is bound to be right around the corner.
If it's any consolation you look lovely today. I'm a big fan of that necklace.
Oh, so sorry to hear your day was so rotten. It's a cliche, but I believe in silver linings, an you're a good person so katmically, this will balance out with amazing things soon. You look lovely, and the
necklace is a wonderful statement.
Great thoughts out to you again - hope they stick this time :-)
I'll send some good thoughts your way in hopes that tomorrow will be better. Australia is an interesting idea and a very grand way to combat a bad day - I am much more of a 'wear a pretty necklace and feel better' kind of person.

Aw, I hope things start looking up for you soon, mah dear. I totally know the feeling, though, and it's rough to look on the bright side. Although you're right, that necklace definitely takes the edge off!
I´m sure your luck is gonna change for good soon!!pretty necklace!

I totally remember that book, and I've definitely had my fair share of those days, too. I send hugs and puppies your way, and hopefully your day will become as pretty as that necklace of yours. :)
Toast with Charmalade
So sorry you're having a bad day :( I agree, though, it'll only get better from here on out! Even if Australia sounds amazing. In other news, the necklace is amazing and you look great.
I was deffffinitely flipping through that book last night as I went through our basement looking for books for today's therapy sessions! Went for "Babar Goes Skiing" instead, but will keep it in mind for next week.
Yuck! Sorry to hear about your bad day!
At least you have adorable flats and a cute necklace and Spring. It's hard to be dark and gloomy when flowers start to bloom. Hope tomorrow is better!
Chic on the Cheap
awww, hang in there! you look fabulous and your purple shoes and necklace are the best, and tomorrow's a new day and something awesome might happen.
I'm sorry to hear about your lousy day. I hope tomorrow is far better!
I love that necklace - it would cheer me up, too.
oh i love i love i love! that necklace and the dark? love love love!
SB
not too serious i hope
Sorry to hear about your string of bad luck...hopefully things will pick up! At least you look great when you're brooding - love that necklace!
keep your chin up, buttercup! good things are definitely on their way!
i love your necklace ... it reminds me of one i saw on modcloth not too long ago. and thank you for linking the shop!
Sorry to hear you had a bad day! I agree with eek, at least you look good!
Aw, sorry to hear the news. I think you're right though--bad things do come in multiples, and things will look up soon! In the mean time, you look great--love how you added the colorful shoes and pretty necklace.
Sorry for your crappy day - I really love your grey day outfit though :) Things will get better soon though, I promise!
Oh dear, I also had a terrible week, but I believe there's a light at the end of the tunnel, so NO WORRIES and, as my little students say: CHEER UP!
It's gonna be okay =)
I loved the dark outfit and this precious necklace. And, if you wanna move, come to Brazil. I'll be gladly waiting for you at the airport! Yes, girls CAN dream!
Bkisses :)
Blerg! Sorry to hear about your terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day (that's one of my favorite childhood books). Hope things start to look up for you soon. xo
everyone has those days. they make the good ones worth it.
I'm sorry to hear about your awful day/week. It's like that song from "Friends": "...When it hasn't been your day, your week, your month, or even your year.."
But it's going to be okay because you are an awesome person, and one day those articles of yours will get accepted (and commended!) in great academic journals and you'll interview for even better positions. Hope things start turning around for you, and just know that you have tons of supporters wishing you the best :)
Oh I hate those kind of days, but sometimes I think it's better to have all the bad stuff happen at once just so that it doesn't ruin all the other perfectly good days.
Love the broody pic.
*hugs* I've gotten too many of the "we liked your resume, we don't have enough room for you, we'll keep your resume on file, think of us later" letters to care anymore. I know you'll find yourself a position.
On the bright side, your moody pictures are kind of cute. :)
Aww, buck up sweetness! And that's so funny that you mention that book specifically. Once I bought a copy for a girlfriend who had a terrible no good very bad day. Hope you feel better!
I love your necklace!! Very very cute! And I'm sorry about your bad day & hope these next few days are very good to you to make up for it :)
So sorry to hear about your no good, very bad, terrible, horrible day! Things can only go up from here though, right? Also, the necklace is lovely in white and really brightens the outfit. :)
Love the necklace!
