Winter Color

Winter Color

orange-red skirt: american apparel
scarlet sweater: thrifted (org. banana republic)
scarf: christmas gift
brown tights: target
belt: gift (anthro)
boots: indigo
freezing cold: pervasive

Today, when I don't have to teach, I'm taking advantage of the fewer clothing restrictions and finally wearing some color! Part of the reason I shy away from color (besides being Dr Vanilla at all times) is that I have trouble mixing colors. Bloggers like Orchid Grey, Chelsea at bright side dweller and E from Academichic make me rethink ways to mix up colors because they are adventurous with mixing colors and patterns and always look fabulous doing it.

I love the unexpected (for me) combination of dark orange and scarlet, and with brown accessories, I feel mostly safe with the mix. While I don't usually go for a lot of colors in the same color family (many mixes of green, for instance), I love mixes of red. Just don't tell my mother, who warned me never, ever to wear pink and red together (hence making it my favorite rebellious color combo as a third-grader).

Winter Color

And as to a few questions about whether I am cold, the answer is yes! But don't worry--I always wear my giant coat. I just don't take pictures with it, because frankly, you'd get bored of seeing the same big sack every day.

Okay, now I really need your help about this: what other colors would you wear with this skirt? My instinct in the past has always been to pair it with brown, but I want to put a little more color into my winter wardrobe, so what unexpected combo would look good here? Mustard yellow? Bright blue? Help me out, I'm color-challenged!

I love the combination of orange and scarlet as well! I'm not sure what other colors I'd try with this skirt... I think white might look pretty nice, and I also think you could pair the skirt with the long, blue sweater in your last post. And what about fuchsia? That could be fantastic!

Can't wait to see what you come up with!

Love the combination! The scarf really brings it all together too. My first reaction to what color would be a bright blue but I really think if done right, so many could work. Certainly black or white which would make the skirt the focus but blue (or maybe even a peach?) would work too. Maybe check out some accessories with that color in it and use that for inspiration for a color pairing. Love you in color!

Love it! The cold is definitely pervasive, and the ice is downright dangerous. I'd probably do the two colors you listed or be more neutral with grey. The scarf looks perfect with this!

Love the combination! You could do the skirt with a black shirt with an interesting texture, and a bold necklace. Blue could work too. What about olive green? I think it would look lovely with a grey shirt and a blue cardigan.

I think bright blue would look nice and maybe soft yellow. I also really like purple and gold with orange-red.I agree with the second comment that peach would look nice too. There are so many choices!!

i love you in color!! that's such a great outfit. i would say that unless you want to look really bold- don't wear that skirt with another bright color. i think you had the right idea with mustard yellow and brown because those are duller colors that will compliment the skirt well. you could also try maybe a white t under with a more colorful cardigan or something. thanks for the links! i'm already a follower of orchid grey, but i can't wait to check out the others!
also, thanks for stopping by me and genny's blog again. i'm always excited to see that you commented

What a great autumnal mix! I love orange with magenta and navy - that group of three is one of my all-time faves.

Oooh! I just bought that skirt, I think because I saw it on your blog awhile back! So this post will be great for me too!

I am planning to wear it with navy, with a sailor striped shirt, with purple, with shirts with patterns that contain this color, and with gray.

Yay, that colorful outfit is fabulous! It does remind me of autumn, I love how you worked similar colors with each other.

My first instinct to match with this skirt is actually a pattern. A black and white striped shirt would really make it pop while complementing it, or a dark plaid. You should try on a bunch of shirts/scarves/belts/etc and show us all options!

Love the color combo!! =)

I think I'd give the skirt a shot with teal, navy, or purple.

My instinct is to pair it with gray, but then again I'm going through an "I love gray" phase. I would go with a light blue, different shades of pink, dark blue, turquoise and cream. I think a great idea would be to pair the skirt with a scarf and pick colors from the scarf to pair with the orange.

Aw, thanks for the shout out :) These colors are glorious together, and I am envious of your awesome scarf collection!

I have gotten so many color combo ideas from the gals at Academichic. I look at their awesome color wheel ALL THE TIME (even for work stuff when I'm designing outreach materials)! Looking at it now, I would think maybe a light shade of teal as a complementary color would work, or sage green or purplish blue. The trick to me is finding accessories that tie in both colors to make it all harmonious (which your scarf does so well with this outfit!).

laoooooooove this! Try a taupe blouse, or cobalt blue. One of my favorite color combos is orangey-red, cobalt blue, and brown.

These colors are beautiful together (and even go with the brick road!) I own very little red things, so I'm not too sure on a color... I'd try some muted out peachy colors with it in spring?

You look so good in these colors. I especially like your skirt! Have a great weekend, girl.

I would wear that skirt with dark blues or teal (in addition to the colors you mentioned). Or black or grey, because I think grey goes with everything.

A teal top would go perfectly with your orangey skirt.

I know this might sound weird... but I think a mint green would be pretty. With a cream belt or cardigan, maybe?? Hmm...

Hey, color! Nice look darling! Well, I am not an expert in colorful outfits, but I think your skirt fits perfectly with a white or black tee. Didn't help that much, huh? Hahaha. And check it out my new post: 10 good reasons for you to learn Portuguese... :D

These colours are amazing, this would have to be one of my favourite outfits of yours!

Is this the skirt that you once wore while carrying a turquoise coffee mug? I think a splash of turquoise would look great with it -either in the form of a scarf against a grey t-shirt, or as a block of colour on its own ...

I'm timid when it comes to bright colors in my wardrobe, but I really love this outfit on you. I think you're right on that a mustard yellow top would work. Or how about a blue/white striped top?
