I'm leaving for Seattle in a matter of hours, where I'm spending a long weekend with my six best girlfriends from college. I love Seattle and I badly miss its wet streets, mountain views, and cozy bookstores. And I can't wait to get gussied up with my girlfriends and head out on the town (something I do woefully infrequently in grad school).
This skirt was another one of my recent alterations--it was my mom's when I was little--and I wish I had taken a picture of the "before," when it was like a giant, floor-length sack. I looked like I belonged on a commune. I hacked off about two feet and took in the seams to make it less baggy, and I'm pretty pleased with the end result. It's nothing too exciting, but it'll be a good workhorse in the closet and will go with lots of other colors and shapes. Plus it's super comfy--a must for cramped airline travel and long waits in security lines (sigh).
Several of you asked to hear more about my time in Ireland, so I'll have a post coming up on that soon--it was an amazing place to live!

I'm a bike-riding bookworm in DC trying to make better use of a sometimes-vanilla closet. You can read a little more about this blog

Aww sounds like a perfect weekend! I've only been to Seattle briefly, but really enjoyed it. And I'm looking forward to hearing about Ireland...it's on my "MUST VISIT" list.
Also---love the grey in the shirt and tights! What a cozy but stylin' travel outfit.
The shirt and tights are a perfect match. How did you DO that??
Have a good trip! I like the grey-blue colors in this outfit, it look comfy yet chic! - Natalya of Wear Necessities

I love this color combo! It's so wintry without being drab-- it's fantastic!
i love the simplicity of this outfit. you look fantastic! :)
have fun with your girlfriends in seattle this weekend. sounds so exciting and so much fun!
I love the layered socks over the tights - such great details, and I love how you've echoed them in the skirt and top and belt. Great job with them hemming, too!
Have a wonderful trip, and thank you so much for the kind comment on my blog!
Love this mix of neutrals and layers!
that's what i should have worn for my 20 hour train ride. never travelling in jeans again.
OMG I'm a Seattleite too who now lives in the Midwest. I grew up there and go back every year to spend time with my besties. Have a fantastic time in Seattle...I hear they're having better weather than we are.
It was a really smart idea to tailor that skirt. You'll get TONS of use out of it, and you're making me want a khaki skirt!
Also, from the way you talk about Seattle, I want to live there? Any chance when we're both done with grad school, we'll both get hired there? Wonder if there are any good Sociology programs...
Also, I spend ridiculously tiny amounts of time going out as well now that I'm in grad school. It's such a demanding pursuit. Any time spent away from it practically feels like cheating.
Love this outfit, especially your skirt. Hope you have a wonderful time with your friends! :) - JoAnn, Sidewalk Chalk
sooooo love those tights. and boots! you're gonna have an awesome time but i can't wait to see the gussied up WWANW, too :)
You should listen to Owl City. It's obsessed with Seattle.
Great job on the skirt!! Sounds like an extremely fun weekend ahead too. Have a great time!
I'm really digging this color palette, it's so geniously simple :]
just discovered your blog - I LOVE the title and the "works cited" format. I admire you so much for balancing school and blogging - when I was in grad school I think I lived in ripped jeans and sweats (which I haven't worn much since). Looking forward to reading more of your posts!
SEATTLE ROCKS!!! I LOVE it there! best sushi I have ever eaten!
Enjoy your time! trips with your mates is the best. I am looking forward to hearing about the homeland. I long to go there and will someday!
simple and effective
This is really cute, and great job altering your skirt! I sew some of my clothes but never seem to get around to just altering the ones that don't fit.
So cute! Love the colors in this outfit, and you look so comfy and stylish for travel.
I am liking the look of the socks slightly above the calf-high boots, and tucked down a bit
I need to find a way to work that into my current pair of winter boots.
-love the grey in the shirt and tights! What a cozy but stylin' travel outfit.
